Abstract. Cement has hydraulic properties (mixed with water) will form a bond and harden.
Cement-making materials consist of the main ingredients (Limestone, Iron Sand, Silica, and
Clay) which are the ingredients in the manufacture of Rowmix in the Rowmill. In the main
ingredient there is a magnetic mineral content for the manufacture of Component Compoun.
To see changes in magnetic minerals from the cement manufacturing process, it is necessary to
analyze the consistency of the material until the initial manufacture. The purpose of this study
was to determine the consistency of the magnetic mineral as the main ingredient of cement in
the Rowmix manufacturing process. The research method used is rock magnetism using a
Bartington Susceptibility Meter Type B (MS2B) which can measure based on mass and
volume with 2 different frequencies, namely Low Frequency and High Frequency. This
measurement uses 6 different samples, namely the main ingredients of cement (Limestone,
Irond Sand, Silica, Clay) and Rowmix materials (Rowmix 1 (RX1) and Rowmix 2 (RX2).
From these measurements, the susceptibility values obtained from the main ingredients
including Limestone approx. 23.7 x 10-8 m3/kg - 46.6 x 10-8 m3/kg, Irond Sand ranged from
470 x 10-8 m3/kg - 1791.1 x 10-8 m3/kg, Clay ranged from 852.7 x 10-8 m3/kg - 986.4 x 10-8
m3/kg, Silica ranges from 148.2 x 10-8 m3/kg - 166.9 x 10-8 m3/kg, while in Rowmill I process
(Rx1) around 133 ,4 x10-8 m3/kg - 180.3 x 10-8 m3/kg, Rowmill 2 (Rx2) 133.4 x 10-8 m3/kg -
244.2 x10-8 m3/kg, Magnetic susceptibility values in the main material range from 1532 x10-8
m3/kg up to 2838,6 x 10-8 m3/kg, while the value of Rowmix 1 (RX1) and Rowmill 2 (Rx2) is
lower than the magnetic susceptibility value of the main ingredient.

1. Introduction

Cement is produced with standard Chemical and Physical parameters. These standards are
achieved by implementing quality control and quality assurance. This testing and control includes x-

ray testing, sieving, compressive strength, H2O, and others [1]. However, none of them has a magnetic
mineral standard, even though one of the main ingredients for making cement comes from Iron Sand
which contains magnetic minerals.

Minerals are inorganic solid materials that occur naturally, which consist of chemical
elements in a certain amount, where the atoms in it are arranged following a systematic pattern [2].
Minerals have 5 properties of magnetic materials, namely Diamagnetic, Paramagnetic, Ferromagnetic,
Antiferromagnetic, and Ferrimagnetic [3]. The purpose of this study was to determine the consistency
of magnetic minerals as indicated by their magnetic susceptibility values. This research uses rock
magnetism method to accompany chemical and physical methods which are used as quality control
and quality assurance (Figure 1).

Figure 1. Cement manufacturing control

Magnetic susceptibility measurements can be performed on almost any material. Magnetic
susceptibility measured over a certain range of magnetic fields will give a magnetization relationship
with that field. This relationship can give a linear or non-linear relationship depending on the
magnitude of the magnetic field used. Magnetic susceptibility was measured using a susceptibility
meter. Rock type affects its susceptibility value [4].
2. Research Methods
2.1 Place and Time of Implementation
This study took samples from PT. Semen Padang and conducted research at the Physics
Laboratory of Padang State University. Sampling time was carried out in February 2022 and
conducting research in April 2022.
2.2 Sample Measurement
Sample measurement was carried out in several stages, namely the first stage of sampling at
PT. Semen Padang. The second stage of the sample is prepared into the holder and the mass is
weighed with a balance (Ohaus Balance SN EO271119030112) [5][6][7][8][9][10]. In the third stage,
the samples were measured using a Bartington Magnetic Susceptibility Meter MS2B type (Figure 2).
The Bartington MS2B operates using a weak magnetic field of 80 A/m rms and can measure at a low
frequency of 470 Hz and a high frequency of 4700 Hz. This tool can measure magnetic susceptibility
values ranging from 1 x 10-6 to 9,999 x 10-6 in cgs units or 1.26 x 10-5 to 1.26 x 10-1 in SI units
(m3/kg). Measurements can be made based on mass specificity and volume.

3.2 Results
3.2.1 Main Ingredients
From the sample measurements using the Bartington Magnetic Susceptibility Meter MS2B type,
the magnetic susceptibility values of the main ingredients range from 23.7 x 10 -8 m3/kg-1791,1 x 10-8
m3/kg. From these data, the lowest susceptibility value was found in Limestone material and the
highest susceptibility value came from Irond Sand (Figure 3).

magnetic susceptibility value of 187 x 10-8 m3/kg and Rowmix 2 (RX2) the highest magnetic
susceptibility value of 244.2 x 10-8 m3/kg. On February 24, 2022 the highest susceptibility value
was obtained from Rowmill 1 (RX1) 180.3 x 10-8 m3/kg and Rowmix 2 (RX2) 213.4 x 10-8

Rowmix material is obtained from the main ingredients (Clay, Limestone, Silica, Irond
Sand) which are mashed and homogenized. In the table above it can be seen that the value of the
main material on 23 February ranged from 2838.6 x 10-8 m3/kg, on 24 February 2022 it ranged
from 2336.5 x 10-8 m3/kg and on 25 February 2022 it ranged from 1532.9 x 10 -8 m3/kg. In
Rowmix material, the magnetic susceptibility value is only in the tens to hundreds, while the main
material has thousands of susceptibility values.
4. Conclusion
The Magnetic Susceptibility value of the main material on 23 February was around 2838.6 x 10 -8
m /kg, on 24 February 2022 it was around 2336.5 x 10-8 m3/kg and on 25 February 2022 it was around
3

1532.9 x10-8 m3/kg. Meanwhile, the Rowmix 1 and Rowmis 2 materials only obtained magnetic
susceptibility values ranging from 151.6 x 10-8 m3/kg - 244.2 x 10-8 m3/kg. It can be concluded that the
susceptibility value from the main ingredient to the Rowmix ingredient is inconsistent.
