What is
visible light?
The range of the electromagnetic
spectrum that we can see with our
naked eyes is known as the visible
spectrum. The radiation with
wavelengths that fall within this range
is simply referred to as light.
When light passes through a prism, it is
separated into its constituent colors;
red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo,
and violet. Red has the longest
wavelength from among these colors
and violet has the shortest

BONUS QUESTION!

What are the three

classifications
of Ultraviolet rays?
OBJECTIVES
1 Understand what is Ultraviolet waves
2 Cite examples of practical
applications of Ultraviolet waves
3 What are the advantages and
disadvantages of UV waves
Ultraviolet Radiation
Ultraviolet radiation lies just beyond
the violet end of the visible spectrum.
Ultraviolet waves have shorter
wavelengths but has higher frequency
than the visible light
> Ultra means ‘’beyond violet’’
> It has 3 classifications:
UVA- wherein 95% of it reaches the
Earth’s surface
UVB- mostly filtered by ozone
UVC- almost completely absorbed
UVA- makes up 95% of the all the UV
rays that make it to the Earth's
surface. UVA penetrates deep into
our skin and can even pass through
glass. UVA damages your skin,
resulting in a tan.
UVB- makes up only 5% of the UV rays from
the sun, but it is very high energy. “UVB does
not penetrate as deeply as UVA, but it can
wreak havoc on the top layers of your skin.”
George says. UVB damages skin cells and causes
DNA mutations that can eventually lead to
melanoma and other types of skin cancer.
UVC- is the highest energy portion of the
UV radiation spectrum. UVC radiation from
the sun does not reach the earth's surface
because it is blocked by the ozone layer in
the atmosphere. Thus, the only way that
humans can be exposed to UVC radiation is
from an artificial source like a lamp or laser

Advantages of Ultraviolet
It plays a vital role in formation Of Ozone.
It Helps In Production Of Vitamin D
UV Rays Emitting Devices Are used as Pest
Controlling Devices.
It Is Used To Study Various Chemical
Structures.
Identify forged documents
Used in medical purposes
Disadvantages of Ultraviolet
Exposure To UV Rays May Cause Skin
Cancer.
UV Rays Leads To Melanoma.
It Suppress The Proper Functioning Of
Immune System.
It Causes Cataract.
It May Even Lead To Premature Ageing
Summary of the lesson:
UV radiations has shorter wavelength but has high
frequency
It has three kinds; UVA, UVB, and UVC. Where too much
UVB ray exposure can cause skin cancer
Most EM waves are invisible to the eye but detectable,
just like Ultraviolet
Ultraviolet serves a great help to us humans, but also
poses a certain degree of risk and danger to people and
environment.
