WHO DISCOVERED
INFRARED?
In 1800, William Herschel conducted an experiment
measuring the difference in temperature between the
colors in the visible spectrum. He placed thermometers
within each color of the visible spectrum. The results
showed an increase in temperature from blue to red.
When he noticed an even warmer temperature
measurement just beyond the red end of the visible
spectrum, Herschel had discovered infrared light!
Remote control (IR remote) uses LED lights to
transmit signals to control devices. It emits pulses of
invisible infrared light.
Infrared scanner such as thermal imaging and
thermal scanner are used to show the

temperature variation of the body. Our body
radiates infrared and under infrared cameras, our
images appear in a variety of colors. The
differences in color determine the differences in
temperature. For example, shades of blue and
green indicate regions of colder temperature;
and red and yellow indicate warmer
temperature.

ULTRAVIOLET
UV radiation is classified into three primary types:
1. ultraviolet A (UVA),
2. ultraviolet B (UVB),

3. and ultraviolet C (UVC),

based on their wavelengths. Almost all of the UV radiation that
reaches earth is UVA though some UVB radiation reaches earth.
UVA and UVB radiation can both affect health but UVA penetrates
deeper into the skin and is more constant throughout the year.
UVC rays have the shortest wavelength. While it is the most
powerful and potentially harmful,  UVC rays are absorbed
in the ozone. They don’t make it to the surface of the planet
in large enough doses to have an impact on our skin.
UVA and UVB are a different story, though. Both make it
through the atmosphere intact, and both can be harmful to
your skin, including increasing your risk of developing skin
cancer.
AT WHAT TIME SUN EMITS UV
RAYS
Nearly half of UV Radiation is
received between 10 a.m and 4
p.m, when the sun rays are the
strongest.
APPLICATIONS OF
ULTRAVIOLET RAYS-
SECURITY MARKINGS
Sensitive documents such as
credit cards, banknotes, and
passports include a UV
watermark that is only seen
under UV emitting light.
Ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation in sunlight
interact with a protein (7-DHC) in the skin,
converting it into vitamin D3, the active form
of vitamin D, which is essential for
maintaining healthy bones and teeth

4. Sunglasses have UV coating that help block harmful rays from

XRAY
Diagnosing bone fractures X-rays are
produced using an X-ray tube. They are
emitted when fast moving electrons hit a metal
target. Long wavelength X-rays can penetrate
the flesh but not the bones that’s why it is used
in diagnosing bone fractures.
Airport security scanner The short
wavelength X-rays can penetrate through
metals which can be used in airport
security scanner.
GAMMA RAY
Treat tumors and cancer through the process called
radiotherapy. The high-energy rays of gamma
destroys cancer cells in the area where it is given.
Gamma rays sterilize surgical instruments
because they easily penetrate through materials and
the energy they release kills bacteria and other
microorganisms
RADIATION THERAPY
SOURCES OF GAMMA RAYS
They are produced by the hottest and most
energetic objects in the universe, such as neutron
stars and pulsars, supernova explosions, and
regions around black holes. On Earth, gamma
waves are generated by nuclear explosions,
lightning, and the less dramatic activity of
radioactive decay.

EFFECTS OF UV EXPOSURE
UVA and UVB rays affect the skin in different ways.
UVA radiation penetrates more deeply into the skin than UVB radiation and is
responsible for the skin changes attributed to premature aging, such as wrinkles.
Recent research indicates that UVA radiation plays more of a role in the
development of skin cancer than previously thought.
UVB radiation affects the upper layers of skin and is primarily responsible for
changes to the surface of the skin, such as the reddening and darkening of the skin
associated with sunburns and suntans. UVB radiation also stimulates vitamin D
production in the body, but prolonged exposure provides more damage than reward.
Both types of UV rays damage the DNA of skin cells. This damage can lead to the
skin cell mutations that cause skin cancer. In addition to skin cancer, UV radiation
exposure can also cause premature aging, immune suppression, and irreversible eye
damage.
REDUCING UV EXPOSURE
You cannot completely avoid UV rays, but you can significantly reduce your
exposure.
Sunscreen is one of the most useful tools in combating UV radiation. Choosing
the right sunscreen is essential. You want a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an
SPF of 15 or higher that protects against UVA and UVB radiation. Apply
sunscreen 20 to 30 minutes before sun exposure and reapply your sunscreen
every two hours or immediately after getting wet or sweating excessively.
In addition to sunscreen, you also want to find other ways to protect yourself
from the sun. Wear a hat and sunglasses to protect your scalp, ears, and eyes.
UVA rays can penetrate glass and clouds, so it is still important to wear
sunscreen indoors and on cloudy days. If possible, avoid prolonged time
outdoors during peak hours of sunlight, particularly in the summer.
STAY OUT OF THE SUN DURING
PEAK UV RADIATION TIMES.
•Regardless of the UV Index forecast for a given day, there are peak times of
day when UV radiation is at its highest. Being in the sun during these hours
will dramatically increase your exposure to UV radiation, even if you take
other protective measures.Peak hours for UV radiation are typically from 10:00
AM to 4:00 PM, though this may vary slightly, depending on your location.
•Remember the shadow rule: if your shadow is short, you need to seek shade. A short
shadow indicates that the sun is almost directly overhead in the sky, which means
there is a high risk of radiation exposure.
•Try to avoid any exposure to sunlight during peak UV hours by staying indoors or
under adequate shade.
