INTRODUCTION

JOB PURPOSE
The OTP Nurse will perform day to day work of SAM children without medical complications treatment
at outreach OTP sites and referral of SAM with complication and MAM cases to facility that provides SC
and TSFP services and provision of preventive activities such MIYCN activities, Vitamin A
supplementation, Deworming of children 12-59 months and Micronutrient supplementation to PLWs.
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function with or

MAIN TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1.a Ensure effective management of clinical and other ailments at OTP and TSFP.
Supervise the activities of the OTP screeners and registrars.
• Work closely with the teams to ensure all children are screened correctly for case detection and
referral of acute malnutrition case to treatment center.
• Provide medical care and advice to patients/beneficiaries and other staff as required.
• Ensure all criteria are respected and understood by the teams, including admission, discharge, and
transfer to and from the OTP/SFP/SC.
• Ensure comprehensive health checks and treatment according to the protocols.
• Ensure correct clinical diagnosis at the time of assessment so that the patient receives appropriate
treatment in the relevant program.
• Timely identification of complications, non-responder, and referrals to the SC.
• Review the forms completed by staff to ensure completion, accuracy and coherence.
• Ensure adequate availability of all medical and food supplies and ensure stock is prepositioned as
planned by discussing with warehouse team.
• Follow-up and provide feedback to the facility Supervisor on the amount and quality of the
treatment supplies if it does not comply with specified quality standards.
• Report on progress and any problems in a timely manner.
• Ensure cases not meeting admission criteria return home as early as possible and understand why
their child is not admitted.
• Through liaison with the outreach community workers, provide effective follow up of all cases:
particularly tracing of children who are absent from the programme, sick children, long stay
children, children not gaining weight, and children with social problems etc.
• Provide key health and education messages to beneficiaries based the protocol and guidelines.
• If there is a problem, find out what is wrong and find a solution or else contact your immediate
supervisor.
• Implement Family MUAC approach initiative activities in the facility level.

1.b Supervise medicines administration in OTP/TSFP activities


• Follow and respect protocols on routine medications for OTP i.e. for Vitamin A supplementation,
deworming, Amoxicillin, Measles vaccination and Multiple Micronutrient supplementation/Iron
folate supplementation for PLWs.
• Add the activities linked to health and nutrition education in the protocols Follow the
treatment of the beneficiaries during visits at home Participate in the follow-up of orders and
consumption.
• Achieve ideal weight gain for enrolled patients as early as possible.
• Analyze the nutritional situation
• Compile the statistical data (admission, default, cured, absent, death) and draft a report on activities

1. c Infant and Young child feeding (IYCF) activities


• Assess mothers and their children to identify specific feeding support needs (through
Simple Rapid Assessment and Full Assessment of mother-baby pair)
• Provide one-on-one breastfeeding counseling for mothers experiencing difficulties breastfeeding
including supporting re-lactation.

• Ensure all mothers/caregivers are aware of the importance of exclusive breastfeeding for the first
six months.
• Provide mothers with practical advice on correct attachment and positioning when breastfeeding
and respond to any concerns or local taboos associated with breastfeeding.
• Counsel mothers on the appropriate time to introduce complementary feeding, and the benefits of
continued breastfeeding and respond to any concerns or local taboos associated with
complementary feeding.
• Educate the mothers on the quality, quantity, and frequency of complementary feeds to promote
adequate weight gain.
• Discourage and educate mothers on the dangers of feeding bottles
• Provide appropriate counseling and ensure support is provided to caregivers of targeted infants who
have no possibility to be breastfed.
• Provide pregnant women with preparatory counseling for breastfeeding and colostrum feeding, to
prevent pre-lacteal feeds and bottle feeding.
• Counsel the mothers on correct maternal nutrition during pregnancy and lactation.
• Deliver messages on IYCF practices and maternal nutrition to the targeted community/communities
through group education sessions.
• Contribute to the development of contextually appropriate IEC materials for local IYCF
assessments.
• Utilize education materials on breastfeeding and complementary feeding practices, relaying
accurate, practical, and specific advice for the mother’s needs

1d. REPORTING RESPONSIBILITIES


• Fill OTP registers and patient cards properly.
• Submit weekly and monthly OTP reports to M and E.
• Provide weekly and monthly nutrition supplies reports.
• Produce defaulter tracing and referral reports.
• Maintain the department records in well filled.
• Maintain supply consumption reports.
• Maintain records of mothers/caregivers attending counselling sessions.]

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education

 Bachelor’s degree of Nutrition/nurse/ Public health. An equivalent combination of relevant


education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
 Experience
 At least 3 years’ experience working as an OTP Nurse
