An Overview about Freedom

The word freedom is an English word “Liberty” which is derived from the
Latin word “Liber”. It is impossible to assign a definite meaning to this Latin word.
Because the words “liberty”, “freedom” and “independence” are used in various ways
in different concepts. Freedom is sometimes used in the sense of right. Thus, the three
concepts of freedom and right revolve around the principle of freedom. So we call
freedom the freedom enjoyed by all the citizens of the country without interference in
speech, writing, living, economic, religion and language.

According to Mac Iver and Laskey, freedom is diversified into two, which is
called natural freedom, another one called social freedom. Natural liberty is the
unrestricted freedom of a man to do what he likes. Natural liberty cannot be given to
the people under a government; Because this kind of freedom is completely
unrestrained; If the government allows this, only chaos and lawlessness will remain in
the country. Natural freedom is the opposite of freedom as it transcends boundaries.
This is what social contract theorists like Hobbes, Locke and Rousseau explained. It
was before the emergence of the government system that man had natural freedom
without any kind of control. He who had more strength would have had unlimited
freedom.

If we turn to next page, we can see social freedom. The freedom a man enjoys
in his life as a member of a social system represents social freedom. This means that
he can do whatever he likes within the constraints imposed in the public interest. The
government also accepts the duties, rights and privileges accepted by the society and
provides protection to them. Social freedom is divided into individual freedom,
political freedom, home independence, national independence, international freedom,
economic freedom and moral freedom.

First of all, a category of social freedom is individual freedom. It has to do

with the life of the individual. Individual freedom is the freedom to do whatever one
wants without hindrance. Doing so can also make the person stand out in society.
Therefore, political freedom and specific freedom under a political system
both refer to the same thing. It is an expression of political freedom that the people
choose the government they want. Freedom to vote in democratic elections, freedom
to contest elections based on full merit, freedom or right to be employed in
government jobs, and full freedom to criticize the functioning of the government
within the bounds of law are all aspects of political freedom.

Furthermore, there is household independence. Household independence

refers to activities carried out by a man at the household level. To treat one’s wife
with due values, to properly maintain the children born and to make them a good
citizen, to enjoy property for years and to lead a life with due rights and freedom to
the extent of self-sufficiency is home independence.

Besides of that, we have national liberation in our list. National liberation is an

expression of national independence. National independence means that no nation is
forced to work under another nation. Independence wars are the cause of national
independence. Apart from that, we have conomic freedom. Economic security,
opportunity and means to earn one's food. Economic freedom is when one is protected
from tomorrow's needs.

In addition, we cannot miss out international freedom. From a global point of

view, the importance of international freedom is that there are no boundaries of
control over the world and no value for pluralism. At the international level, they are
expressions of international freedom such as promoting, building a world without
killing, and peaceful settlement of disputes.

Ideologically conceived thinking is moral freedom. Ancient scholars such as

Plato, Aristotle, and later scholars such as Rousseau, Kant, Heins, Greene, and
Pozanke have given much thought to this. Every human being is unique. He strives to
improve his personality. At the same time, he must also live for others. That is called
perfect self-realization.

Additionally, there is some importances of individual freedom. Individual

freedom is the ability of every individual in society to live according to their own will.
Man is in the midst of a social system to which he depends. Man's mind operates on
the basis of his needs and desires. He should have the maturity to accept negative
consequences during the movement. The government sets limits to one's freedom and
imposes various restrictions. Such boundaries and restrictions become very necessary;
Because even today we have not developed to the point where we have an unrestricted
borderless government. Society is made up of diverse people. There are also
intellectuals; There are common people; There are strong and there are weak.

In such a system, a government can function properly only by knowing and

accepting each other's mutual rights and freedoms. In this context, the importance of
individual freedom and the need to protect it arises. When human labor has the power
to change the natural environment and nature of the earth, we can create a better
nation by using mental energy appropriately to create nations in the world.

When it comes to modern society and freedom, there is a concept of freedom

became a controversial issue in the history of thought, and it was in the modern era of
Western Europe that the establishment of individual consciousness was first seen. In a
medieval social status society, freedom essentially meant privilege, for example,
aristocratic freedom, urban freedom from the process of struggling with such social
privileges, it was free, equal, and autonomous. The concept of a simple individual is
not so old as it is conceptually formed. During the Reformation, Luther advocated
individual freedom. He insisted on the “freedom of a Christian”, but it was limited to
the world of faith, and he was a “slave-will” theorist. Humanism such as Erasmus,
Costello gave rise to individual freedom for Qatari theorists, but it cannot be said to
be a strong claim to transcend the barriers of social division.

In conclusion, our freedom lies within us. Our thoughts are the basis of our
happiness and unhappiness. Only the fear within us holds back our achievement. No
matter how many challenges surround us, our thought is a weapon that can destroy all
of them. Every minute we live we enrich the environment with our actions. The world
will benefit us if we know who we are. The waves in the air are also ready to give us
worldly knowledge. Nature is always in favor of our freedom. Let's protect our
freedom.
