INTRODUCTION

The chapter ‘The Adventure” is a story about

Professor Gangadharpant Gaitonde who is strangely
in a different world. He knows it is Pune but the facts
are different from what he believes. He decided to go
to Bombay via train ‘Jijamata Express’. When he
reached Bombay, things were different. When he
decides to investigate the history, he finds some
surprising facts. The East India Company was still
ruling and the Battle of Panipat had been won by
Marathas. It was different from what he knew and
had studied. The East India Company was taken
aback after events of 1857 and the Battle of Panipat
had been won by Mughals.
The lesson is a wonderful combination of history
and science.

THEME OF THE STORY

The story of “The Adventure” hinges on a particular

historical event. A historian Gangadharpant who
wonders what might have happened if the Marathas
had not granted a concession to the East India
Company to stay on in Bombay and not sought their
help in running their research wing of science and
technology. These steps cost the country and the
Maratha ruler, dear. The British expanded their
influence and dominance in India. A little error of
the Maratha soldiers in the Battle of Panipat also
would have turned the course of history. Mr
Gaitonde reads an extract from Bakhar about the
narrow escape of the Vishwas Rao in the battle
against Abdali. This sets him thinking. He meets with
a collision and for two days he travelled in the past
and future. He clarifies certain points when he
discussed them with Rajendra Deshpande. Rajendra
gave a scientific explanation of how and why the
transition took place from the present to past and
future.
This story is a complete juxtaposition of facts and
historical events.

theory.
After completing his Ph.D., Narlikar held various
academic positions in India and abroad, including a
visiting professorship at the University of Sussex

ANALYSIS OF THE TOPIC

The lesson “The Adventure” revolves around a

particular historic event, Gangadharpant Gaitonde. It
shows how Professor Gaitonde wonders about the
fate of India if the Marathas had not been allowed
any relief to stay in Bombay by the EIC. he believes
that this step had laid an impact on them.
The transition from one world or one event to
another with the perfect blend of history and science
would make the readers more fascinated about it.
Jayant wrote this in a very interesting way and gave
all of us to enjoy the time travels and experience
those things we have never imagined.
We see that a history professor travels through time
and upon going into the past, he saw those things,
and his experiences were so unusual. He finds
himself in Mumbai, which is completely different. He
gets down from Victoria Terminus Station, which he
finds very clean and update. He read on the
coaches, ‘Greater Bombay Metropolitan Railway.’
Moreover, he was also surprised to see Anglo-
Indians staff at the station.
While getting off the station he also saw the HQ of
EIC along with many official buildings of Britishers.
In fact, he was surprised that his son’s workplace
Forbes was also not there. He was left confused and

so to avoid this state of confusion he went to the
public library and there he read about the Battle of
Panipat.
He was left shocked when he read those books
which state that British rule never happened in
India. After that, he visited the Azad Maidan. At Azad
Maidan, he got into a fight with the audience and
was thrown off the stage. After being thrown off he
lay down there unconscious; came out of his time-
travel experience.
After that, he went to Professor Deshpande for an
explanation and got to know that reality is
somewhat different than we expect always. So, many
physicists believe in the fact that many worlds are
existing and one can see through his or her own
senses. Professor Gaitonde has been into one. He
transitioned into another world where he saw all
these things and now due to an accident he was in a
coma.

CONCLUSION

To sum up, the lesson “The Adventure” deals with

the explanation of time travel and is a perfect blend
of history and science. The events of other worlds
can be seen and felt through one’s senses only it
cannot be explained by anyone in detail.
