Answer the following:

1. Compare the situations for the formations of a real and a virtual image.
Ans. A real image is formed on a screen. A virtual image cannot be formed on a screen. Real image is
always inverted whereas virtual image is always erect. Images formed by a plane mirror, convex mirror
and concave lens are always virtual, whereas the images formed by a convex lens and concave mirror
depends on the distance of the object from the mirror or lens.

2. Rear view mirror of bikes carry a warning message “Objects in the rear view mirror are closer than
they appear”. What could be the reason behind it? Explain.

Ans. Rear view mirrors give a wide field of view because of convex surface. But this makes the images
smaller. Since smaller images seem to be at a far distance than they actually are, warning signs are carried
by the mirrors to remind the driver the fact.

3. Nilam’s grandmother is not able to see the objects clearly. Nilam takes her to the neary eye
hospital. Doctor examines her and gave her proper treatment with spectacles. [Value Based
Question] Answer the following questions based on the above
(a) What values can you learn from Nilam?
(b) What do you think about why a person needs the spectacles in old age?
Ans. (a) Caring, affectionate
(b) A person needs spectacles in old age as they cannot see objects clearly. To enhance the focus
and vision spectacles are used.
