Abstract

A business can range from a single proprietor enterprise to a large corporation which employs
thousands of workers across multiple countries. Based on the scale of business, organizations
are classified as micro-enterprises, small-scale enterprises, large scale industries, public
enterprises, and multinational corporations. In this article, we will take a quick peek at large
scale industries.
LARGE-SCALE INDUSTRY, 1850–1950 The term "large-scale industry" refers to
factories that combine at least three characteristics: use of machinery, employment of wage
labor, and the application of regulatory measures such as the Factory Act or Disputes Act.
These features were of recent origin in nineteenth-century India and, to a large extent,
products of British colonial rule. In employment statistics, the units registered as "factories"
under the Factory Act can be considered large-scale industry.
Introduction
Industries which requires huge infrastructure and manpower with an influx of
capital assets are Large Scale Industries. In India, large-scale industries are the ones with a
fixed asset of more than one hundred million rupees or Rs. 10 crores. The Indian economy
relies heavily on such industries for economic growth, generation of foreign currency, and the
creation of job opportunities for millions of Indians. An industry is a sector
that produces goods or related services within an economy. The major source of revenue of a
group or company is an indicator of what industry it should be classified in. When a large
corporate group has multiple sources of revenue generation, it is considered to be working in
different industries. The manufacturing industry became a key sector of production and
labour in European and North American countries during the Industrial Revolution, upsetting
previous mercantile and feudal economies. This came through many successive rapid
advances in technology, such as the development of steam power and the production
of steel and coal. Since the formulation of the agile manifesto in 2001, agile methods have
transformed software development practice by strongly emphasizing change tolerance,
evolutionary delivery and active end-user involvement .Agile development has received
widespread interest, resulting in a shift of patterns of thought. Scrum is now a de facto
standard for development in many countries, and other methods like extreme
programming (XP) and elements of lean software development such as Kanban are in
widespread use. Rajlich describes agile development as a paradigm shift in software
engineering that “brings a host of new topics into the forefront of software engineering
research” . In the first special issue on agile development, in IEEE Computer, Williams
and Cockburn stated that agile methods “best suit collocated teams of about 50 people or
fewer who have easy access to user and business experts and are developing projects
that are not life-critical”. The success of agile methods for small, co-located teams has
inspired use in new domains: Companies increasingly apply agile practices to large-scale
projects. However, there are challenges with achieving the same productivity gains in these
areas, as in the “home ground” of agile methods. Agile methods are based on the idea that
high-quality software can be developed by small teams using the principles of
continuous design improvement and testing based on rapid feedback and change .As agile
development techniques are used on large-scale projects, new challenges arise. “Agile in
the large” was voted “top burning research question” by practitioners at the XP2010
conference [5]. Fundamental assumptions in agile development are severely challenged
when using these practices in large-scale projects. Self-management is a central principle in
agile methods, but studies from other fields than software development indicate that self-
management can reduce the ability to effectively coordinate across teams .Also while
the teams need to self-manage, team members need to have an effective knowledge
network and collaborate closely with experts outside the team in large-scale agile to have
an emerging architecture could hamper project progress when many teams are working in
parallel, and some practices like the scrum of scrum has been found to be inefficient in
large projects. An international survey on agile adoption1 shows that agile practice has
primarily been successful in small teams. To address these challenges with agile methods in
large projects, we organized a workshop at XP2013 which resulted in a suggested research
agenda . At XP2014, we wanted to strengthen this line of research and organized a workshop
on “Principles of Large-Scale Agile Development.” The aims of this workshop were to
create a community of researchers interested in this topic, to deepen the knowledge
through identifying potential principles of large-scale agile development and to revisit
the research agenda defined in 2013. The workshop included a keynote on "Characteristics
and principles for large-scale agile development" by Maarit Laanti and a second keynote on
“The leader role in large-scale agile development” by Lars-Ola Damm. All workshop
members were asked to define what they meant by ‘large-scale agile.’ Further, we had
paper presentations and group discussions on four topics: Architecture, inter-team
coordination, portfolio management and scaling. The assignment for groups during
discussion was to identify main principles within each core area. After these
discussions we revisited the research agenda and did a voting on what should be high priority
topics. In this summary of the workshop discussions and introduction to the papers from
the conference, we start by defining what we mean by large-scale agile development, then
introduce the papers in this post-conference proceedings and add results from the workshop
discussions to propose principles in the four areas architecture, inter-team coordination,
portfolio management and scaling. Finally, we present the revised research agenda
defined at the workshop.
Purpose:

The term “Large scale industries” refers to those industries which require huge infrastructure,
man-power and a have influx of capital assets. The term ‘large scale industries’ is a generic
one including various types of industries in its purview. All the heavy industries of India like
the iron and steel industry, textile industry, automobile manufacturing industry fall under the
large scale industrial arena. However in recent years due to the IT boom and the huge amount
of revenue generated by it the IT industry can also be included within the jurisdiction of the
large scale industrial sector. Indian economy is heavily dependent on these large industries
for its economic growth, generation of foreign currency and for providing job opportunities to
millions of Indians. The following are the major large scale industries in India.

Advantages:
Here are some advantages of large scale industries:

 They provide an impetus to the industrialization of the country.

 Large scale industries, usually, produce capital and basic goods (instruments,
machines, chemicals, etc.)

 They are capable of generating funds for the research and development of new
technologies.

 Due to the large scale of operations, they have the potential to lower the cost of goods.

 Further, they create opportunities for small-scale and cottage industries to evolve and
flourish.

 Also, the employment opportunities created by large scale industries are huge.
Large Scale Industries in India:

 Iron and Steel Industry

 Textile Industry

 Automobile Manufacturing Industry

 Over the last two decades, Information and Technology (IT) industry has evolved and
has contributed huge revenues while creating thousands of jobs for Indians. Hence, many
economists include it in the large-scale industry sector.

 Telecom Industry

It is important to note that these industries are either manufacturing units or those which use
both indigenous and imported technologies. Here are some more examples:

Fertilizer , Cement , Natural gas , Coal , Metal extraction , Metal processing , Petroleum ,
Mining , Electrical , Petrochemical , Food processing units , Tourism , Banking ,
Sugar , Construction , Automobile , Communication equipment , Cement , Chemicals ,
Earth movers , Consumer durables (like television, refrigerators, etc.) , Engineering products ,
Vehicle assembly , Beverages , Agricultural processing , Insurance and Finance.

In recent years, as the markets opened up due to globalization, there has been a mixed effect
on large-scale industries. There are some who have managed to attract international
customers, foreign trade and technology, tie-ups. However, there are also others who were
unable to cope with the competitiveness ushered in by the open market.
