What are Samplers?

 Automated mechanical devices which take a representative

sample from the main flow of product
 They provide quality advice about the product
 Which allows
 Control of blending
 Control of plant feeding
 Knowledge of value of loaded product

Why Sample

 Mineral material are not homogeneous;

 To know the quality of heterogeneous materials we need to
sample;
 Sampling is defined as taking a small portion of a whole mass
that accurately represents the whole mass;
 This sample then provides a knowledge of the whole mass of
sampled material.

Theory of Sampling - TOS

 Used as the method of determining the variability of materials

 Allows us to ensure a sample is representative of a
heterogeneous source
 Sampling Protocols, Systems and Equipment are designed to
ensure TOS principles are met

as a function of:
 Concentration
 Spatial distribution Material (lot)
 Constitutional distribution characteristics

 Sampling tool size

Principles of Sampler Design

 All particles must have an equal chance of being sampled

 No loss or contamination of the sample
 Sample cutter must move at a constant speed
 Cutter blades must be sharp and straight
 Cutter opening must be constant
 Cutter must have sufficient capacity to hold the sample
 The cutter must take a complete cross-section of the stream
 The discharge end of a conveyor is the best location
 The cutter should intersect the stream in a plane normal to the stream
trajectory
