Weekly Reflection Journal

RJ1: Introduction to Self-Reflection
As you wrap up your first week in BUS 101/201, take a moment to pause and reflect on your
initial impressions and experiences. Respond to each of the following questions as journal
prompts to help you process and capture your thoughts:
Date Completed: September 21, 2023

Reflect on your initial reactions to the course content, syllabus, and teaching style of your
professor. What stood out to you? What sparked your interest or curiosity?

- My first impression of BUS 101 was the syllabus. I was surprised by the relatively light
workload, especially when compared to the syllabus of other core classes. I believe that
it will help relieve students’ stress when it comes to exam season. However, BUS 101
still give students the challenges they need, like the MNP Impact Series.

- The professor seems very friendly to students. He creates a positive learning

environment where students, regardless of their backgrounds and identities, are free to
express themselves, and to voice their opinions. Also, I think that he maintains a nice,
steady pace so it is easy for everyone to follow.

- On week 3 lecture, there was this talk about ELR and CareerConnect. It was interesting
for me to know more about the way our program was built, as well as activities
available for me to take to gain competencies and soft skills. It improves my university
experience and perhaps increases my chance of employment after my graduation.
Another aspect that I like about BUS 101 is the MNP Impact Series. It gives me an
opportunity to work on an actual business case. I find it a good occasion to put what I
learnt into practice, earn hands-on experience, and meet actual company
representatives.

Are there any concerns or questions that you have after the first week? What steps can you
take to address those concerns or seek clarification?

- I don’t think that I had any questions or concerns after the first week. I find everything
quite straightforward and easy to grasp. Most of the information that was not (or
briefly) mentioned in class is available on the university’s website. I usually look up
questions regarding my program and school services online and most of the time, I
received an answer. But I think that I would reach out to TAs or send an email if
needed.

Take a moment to consider the various resources available at the University of Alberta and
the Alberta School of Business. Think about the services, facilities, and opportunities that are
accessible to you as a student. Do you see yourself utilizing any of these resources? How do
you think they might play a role in your academic, personal, and professional growth?
Brainstorm ideas of how you might effectively utilize the resources available to you during
your time on campus.
- There are many clubs at the U of A as well as the Alberta School of Business.
Recently, I went to the Business Club Fair and check out what’s available. I am
interested to join the BFA or AIBC next semester. I think that participating in activities
other than academic will help me become more confident, make more friends, and gain
new skills.
- My goal long-term goal is to start a startup and being my own boss. Therefore,
entrepreneurial resources like eHUB and Student Innovation Centre would be useful.
They would equip me with necessary skills, mentorship, and chances for my future
business to flourish.
