One of the famous authors in my province is Francisco Sionel Jose, he was born on December 3, 1924,

and died on January 6, 2022, at the age of 97. Before journaling, he studied at the University of Santo
Tomas. He had a pre-med course, but he dropped out.

He founded a publishing house and owned the Solidaridad bookstore. He also established the Philippine
arm of PEN. Some of his books have been translated into 28 languages.

One of his famous works is Dusk: A Novel, or Po-on Isang Nobela; it has a genre of historical fiction and
romance and was published in 1984.

In this story, we unfold the struggles of the Filipinos during the Spanish and American periods. This really
opened my eyes to how cruel and ruthless the conquerors were at that time, and how much Filipinos
struggled and sacrificed their lives at that time for the independence of the country.

From 1880 to 1889, an Ilocano family abandoned the old barrio to survive the challenges in
southern Pangasinan in the Philippines and escape Spanish cruelty. Istak is a sacristan aspiring
to be a priest because of the influence of Padre Jose Leon. He learned to speak Spanish and
Latin through the teachings of Padre José Leon. He also studied arts and medicine. However,
Padre Jose was getting old and was replaced by a young priest. This young priest wants to get
rid of Istak because he caught him having intercourse. Istak lives with his father, Ba-ac, his
mother, Mayang, and his two younger brothers, An-no and Bit-tik. A few years ago, Ba-ac was
ordered to run errands by a Spaniard, but unfortunately, he was sick and refused and promised
to make it up late. but he was arrested and hung in one arm, causing him to lose the arm and
making him hate the Spanish and the church. An-no is jealous of his brother, Istak, because
Istak has an education. This jealousy grew when he met Dalin, who was a widow. An-no was
attracted to Dalin, but Dalin was attracted to Istak.

The young priest wants Istak's family to leave. Ba-ac came to see the young priest and to talk to
him, and then he realized that the young priest was the one who ordered him to be hung in one
arm. This made Ba-ac angry, and because of this anger, he killed the young priest. Because of
this, Istak's family and relatives hurriedly left in order to not be caught by the police. They came
to meet their other relatives, who were also expelled, and join them. There have been various
adventures wherein the daughter of one police officer was raped. Because of this, An-no
married the girl and abandoned his feelings for Dalin.

After some more adventures, Istak's mother Mayang died of drowning, and his father Ba-ac died
because of pythons. When they arrived in Rosales, they met a local landowner named Don
Jacinto, who was very sympathetic and helped them build their own small village. On the other
hand, politics were hovering in the background, with the opposition of the Spanish and the
involvement of the Americans. Soon the Americans took over, and they are just as bad as the
Spanish. Cholera hit Istaks's village, and he almost died. When he was ill, An-no was taken
away to be executed because of his father's crimes. Don Jacinto has a very strong involvement
in the independence movement, and Istak starts helping him. Soon after, Istak was sent on his
first dangerous mission, to send a letter to the president, but ended up in the battle of Mount
Tirad and unfortunately died.
