 When To Use Academic English

Using Academic English isn't always appropriate. For example, you wouldn't ask your
friends to "Examine the sample results from the group chat and deduce who may be
attending the gathering that evening" - that would just sound odd.

We usually use Academic English in academia (surprise!). Example include:

 Research and reports

 Proposals

 Essays

 Presentations

 Books

 Journals

 Dissertations

Features Of Academic English

 Although AE can differ across disciplines, some features of Academic English should
always be followed. They are:
 Formal
 Avoids contractions, e.g., don't, can't, isn't
 Avoids colloquialisms and slang
 Written in the 3rd person, e.g., The linguist David Crystal stated he believed ...
 Avoids personal pronouns, e.g., I
 Use of passive voice, e.g., Research was undertaken
 Cautious and objective, i.e., using hedging words to show how most things are not 100%
certain, e.g., could, might, may
 Evidenced and cited, e.g., There are currently more non-native English speakers than
native English speakers ().
 Critical i.e., explores gaps and bias in the knowledge and evidence
 Explicit, i.e., follows an objective and purpose rather than creativity
 Linear, i.e., follows a structured plan
 Balanced, i.e., doesn't contain a lot of emotive language or biased opinions
 Referenced - most examples of academic writing are accompanied by a reference list
What is the Ideal Academic Writing Style?

So actually, what is the most ideal academic writing style? What are the main criteria that you
must meet to do good academic writing? If you are serious about learning Academic Writing,
make sure you understand the following points one by one.

Using Formal Language

The absolute criterion for writing scientific papers in English is to use formal language. At that
time, you have to make sure your language is free from casual terms, let alone slang.

The reason for prohibiting the use of informal language in writing is to avoid subjectivity.
Because a piece of writing can only be called a scientific work if the writing is universal and
regardless of the writer's everyday characteristics.

Departing from Critical Thinking

If you want to study Academic Writing seriously, you have to learn to brainstorm. This means that
you have to learn to think critically until you find a truly original idea.

Before writing a scientific work, you must ensure that the topic and title you choose is different
from the others. It's possible to be similar, but don't let it last. Because if it is discovered that your
work and discoveries are 100% the same as other people's, your credibility as a writer of scientific
works will be doubted.

Using Third Person Pronouns

The next main requirement for academic writing is to use third person pronouns. When you write
a scientific paper, make sure you do not use the words "I", "you", or "he". If you want to write
about someone, you should use the terms “sample” or “respondent”.
