Hawthorne experiments and their relevance to organizations today

Several tests were carried out at the Hawthorne plant of the Western Electric

Company between 1924 and 1932. During these tests, workers were observed to see if their

behavior or productivity changed when the lighting changed. Their productivity rose when

the lighting was altered (Ameratunga, 2019). The beneficial impact on the productivity of

various working conditions, including breaks, working days, and weeks, was also examined.

Each adjustment led to an increase in their output. The researchers realized that workers were

more affected by attention than by changing settings, but they could not identify a pattern of

precise adjustments that predicted results. The Hawthorne effect is a response that occurs

when people become aware that they are being watched and alters how they behave. The

initial goal of the study was to determine whether certain environmental factors affected how

responsive and effective workers were. According to the study, rather than environmental

elements like illumination, employees were more receptive to working in teams and how

much interest their manager showed in their work.

One of the most important lessons learned about the employees' behavior is paying

attention since the Hawthorne effect occurs when workers feel like they are being heard.

Today's executives must give their staff members the proper attention without micromanaging

them excessively and jeopardizing their performance and productivity (Ameratunga, 2019).

The Hawthorne effect has also demonstrated that workers pay closer attention to them.

However, in today's workplaces, it has a specific significance. Although employees do not

like to be constantly watched, they do want to feel valued.
