Racism in Advertisement

Racism in advertising is a serious problem that has drawn attention and criticism over time.
It entails the portrayal or treatment of people or groups from various racial backgrounds in
a prejudiced or discriminating way which includes whitewashing, colorism, lack of diversity,
racial insensitivity, negative racial stereotypes etc.

For instance, Heineken “Lighter is Better” (2018): Heineken received backlash for a beer
advertisement that showed a bartender sliding a beer past several Black people to a lighter-
skinned woman, with the tagline “Lighter is Better.” This was seen as promoting colorism
and racial bias.

In conclusion, racism in advertising is a complex issue with far reaching consequences. It can
perpetuate harmful stereotypes, exclude marginalized groups and contribute to social
inequality. The above-mentioned instance demonstrates how crucial it is for advertising to
be inclusive and sensitive to cultural differences.
