Science Week Discovery Night: Friday 13 March 2020 University of Sheffield

During Science week 9-13 March 2020 Sheffield University is again running their brilliant
Discovery Night on Friday evening 4-8pm. This is open to members of the public and we
would encourage families to consider attending part or even all of the event.

Hands-on activities
Meet our scientists and engineers at their stands in and around Firth Court and
find out more about what they get up to behind the scenes at the university.

You'll have a chance to get hands-on and try different experiments at each stand,
plus ask all your burning questions about life the universe and everything. Don't
forget to pop into the Animal and Plant science labs and meet the skeletons at the
Alfred Denny Museum. Follow your curiosity and see what you can discover!

The interactive talks last for 30 minutes and have set start times which are
indicated below.

Nano Science: How are Shells, Climbing and Nano-Particles connected?


5pm - 5.30pm Alfred Denny Lecture Theatre 1,
Have you ever wondered how lizards climb on walls? Why is sticky tape sticky? How
we can make sand? Come and find out about teeny-tiny science found in nature, and
how it helps us make huge improvements in our life!

Isn’t it Cold
5.45pm-6.15pm Alfred Denny Lecture Theatre 2,
Strange things happen to everyday objects when they get very, very cold. We will
deflate balloons, shatter flowers, and reveal the amazing things you can do when
you go to -196 C using liquid nitrogen. An exciting demonstration and talk for
primary and secondary children.

Looking for Aliens


6.30pm-7pm Alfred Denny Lecture Theatre 1,
We have discovered thousands of planets around other stars and we are a few years
away from being able to look for alien life on them. Astronomers from the star and
planets group will explain how we're going to do this, and we can think about what
we might find…

Can We Move and Feel Things Using Sound?


7.15pm- 7.45pm Alfred Denny Lecture Theatre 2,
What does the word acoustics mean to you? Music? Instruments? It's no surprise
that this is all people think of. We will showcase the future of technology through
sound haptics and acoustic levitation. Come and attend this exciting talk to find out
more, you may even get to see your own heart using acoustics!

Discovery Night will be based at Firth Court and the Alfred Denny Building, Western Bank,
Sheffield S10 2TN.

Car parking
Visitors are encouraged, where possible, to take public transport to the event, as parking
around campus is limited. The nearest public car park to the Discovery Night venues is the
Durham Road Q-Park (S10 2JA).

Additional car parking spaces are also available at the Rockingham Street Car Park (S1 4NL)
about 10 minutes walk from the venue. On street parking is also available some streets
around the University - please see local signage for parking restrictions.
