ABSTRACT

Mukhtaromah, I’anatul. 2021. Deconstruction Analysis of Masculinity Applied on

Judy Hopps in Zootopia Film. Thesis, Department of English Language
Education STKIP PGRI Jombang. Advisor: M. Syaifuddin S.S., M.A

Keywordds: Masculinity Concepts, Main Character, Deconstruction

The purpose of this research is to show how the main character was depicted
and how masculinity concepts applied on main character Judy Hopps in Zootopia
film used deconstructive approach. The researcher used descriptive qualitative
method in analyzing the film.
The researcher chose this film because some scenes can be analyzed by
depiction of the main character (Boggs and Pertie, 2000) and masculinity concepts
(Levant, 1995) used deconstructive theory by Derrida. Deconstructive is about
“deconstruct” the norm, people’s thinking or culture in society. The source of the
data was the film itself. The data was from some utterances of the film that
reflected the deconstructive side of Judy Hopps.
The researcher found that Judy was depicted as a flat character because the
main Character Judy Hopps in Zootopia film was not changed in the story of the
film. The researcher also found that Judy Hopps has deconstructive side that got
from 4 points of masculinity concepts. Those were confidence, hiding emotion,
self reliance, and strength. It could be proven if women can also have masculinity
concepts. Masculinity did not fully exist in men. Women also have a masculinity
that makes them more able to think and act logically and positively.

Mukhtaromah, I’anatul. 2021. Analisis Dekonstruksi Maskulinitas Diterapkan

Pada Judy Hopps dalam Film Zootopia. Skripsi. Pendidikan Bahasa
Inggris STKIP PGRI Jombang. Dosen Pembimbing: M. Syaifuddin S.S.,

Keywords: Konsep Maskulinitas, Karakter Utama, Dekonstruksi

sisi dekonstruktif Judy Hopps.

CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

This chapter provides an introduction of the research. The parts that

will be explained include background, scope and limitation, problem of study,

objectives of the study, significances of the study definition of the key terms,

and research method.

A. Background of the Study

In general, literature is understood as a form of human activity that

belongs to works of art and uses language as material. Literature is an

important thing in everyday life. Since we were young, we have been

introduced to things related to literature. But we cannot yet understand what

literature is. Simply, literature is when we produce or use original and unusual

writing, or we can say “creative” writing of a person or people, without

thinking more about what we write (Castle, 2007). There are a lot of genres of

literature. One of them is fiction. film, novel, drama, and poetry are included

into fiction.

A film is one of literary work that is included into fiction, because a

film is a realization of a novel or writer’s thinking. Despite watching a film, a

person can also appreciate it whether its plot, characters, settings or another. If

a person has done it, so it is called literary appreciation. Unlike written fiction

which is almost entirely imaginative, fiction films refer to real life which are

used to characterize, situations, and events. A literary writer is a personal artist

who has the freedom to confuse reality and fantasy in his works. The author

1
2

can consciously control theimaginations that enter his subconscious in a

narrative manner which will be developed and create a story line.

In interpreting a literary work, it is also necessary to study literary

works that are directly related to literary theories, such as semiotics,

structuralism, sociology, inter-textual, deconstruction, etc. In the study of

literary works is an in-depth study of literary works literature from the various

elements that make up it. These elements include intrinsic and extrinsic

elements. These elements will be very interesting if investigated further from

the point of view of deconstruction theory. This theory is a form of criticism

based on careful reading to interpret a text.

One of the intrinsic elements in the film is the character. Abrams

(2005: 42) explains that character is a depiction of someone in dramatic and

narrative work. Interpreting a character is the writer and also the reader or

audience, which is a process of judging moral, intellectual, and emotional

qualities by concluding a dialogue or action. There are two types of character

such as round character and flat character. The character has many depictions

in the film. Some describe the masculine impression that male characters

usually play. But now there are several films that depict masculine portrayals

played by female characters.

According to Connell’s theory (in Wedgwood 2009) masculinity and

femininity are inherently relational concepts, which have meaning in relation

to each other, as a social demarcation and a cultural opposition. Based on the

theory put forward by Connell, it can be concluded that the concept of

3

masculinity can also be owned by women. The concept of masculinity that is

owned by women can be called feminine masculinity.

Masculinity is a description for dialogues, behavior, and thoughts that

related to men. And for masculine concept are about confidence, ability to

hiding emotions, self reliance, and strength. The definition of masculinity is

socially and biologically created. Here masculinity is different from gender

because both men and women can have masculine traits. The characteristics

attached to the term masculinity are courage, independence and assertiveness.

Deconstruction is turned up from a strong traditional idea of French

that is influenced by Edmund Husserl and Martin Heidegger’s

phenomenological project. Deconstruction is often referred to as post-

structural or postmodern. This theory exists as a developer of the old thoughts

contained in the structural literary theory. A structural theory that consider a

text to contain a valid meaning in a complete structure in a particular language

system. All of this is opposed by the presence of deconstruction or post-

structural theory. Post-structural is also a thought that is one step ahead of

modernity. Post-structural is unthinkable without structural.

One of those who put forward this deconstruction theory is Jacques

Derrida. Derrida rejects the existence of hierarchical structural old thoughts

(white / black, positive / negative, short / tall, and so on). Hierarchical here

means there is a higher or better status. Derrida's thought assumes that

language is unstable, structure is unstable, and meaning is unstable. Derrida

understands signs as marks that have no own weight, for him there are no
4

signs because they are all markers. A meaning in a word has a trace (tracing)

thatwill require another marker that will never be complete to explain that one

word.

The signified concept is never present in and of itself, in a sufficient

presence that would refer only to itself. Essentially and lawfully, every

concept is inscribed in a chain or in a system within which it refers to the

other, to other concepts. According to Derrida 1982a: 64 (in Florentsen 1996:

95) the theme of homogeneity, the philosophicalthemestandardbrilliance, is

what must be destroyed

To study a literary work, one of which is a film work, the

deconstruction theory put forward by Derrida can be used as a basic theory.

There are several films whose storylines raise the thought of deconstruction.

Like a break of racism, if a black person is the same as a white person, a

woman is the same as a man, and so on. One of them is Zootopia, the

American 3D animated fiction film was directed by Byron Howard and Rich

Moore which was released in February, 2016. This animated film is one of the

films under the Walt Disney Pictures company and is a production of Walt

Disney Animation Studios.

This film tells the story of a female rabbit named Judy Hopps who has

the ambition to become a police officer since she was a child. But the

environment around her are disagree because there is no a rabbit has become a

police officer yet. Especially his father and mother who ordered her to

continue her family's farming business. As an adult, Judy decided to attend the
5

Police Academy and managed to prove that rabbits can also become police by

becoming the best graduates in the Police Academy. Judy was assigned to the

center of Zootopia and had to leave her hometown of Bunnyborrow. Zootopia

is the center of a metropolitan city inhabited by various types of animals. At

the police station where Judy was assigned, she was also underestimated by

Bogo the police chief because there who become as policemen were usually

wild animals or those with large physiques. First Judy was only assigned to

vehicle parking tax duties. It was there that she met Nick the fox who was

originally a criminal who eventually became his friend. Judy also proved that

she also deserved to be considered a police by solving two cases. First she

looked for an otter that had disappeared. But unexpectedly, from the search

she could solve a very big case which turned out to involve the mayor.

Zootopia is a 3D animated film that won a Golden Globe award. The

director Byron Howard was born on December 26, 1968 who is a director,

producer, scriptwriter, animator, and voice actor at Walt Disney, United

States. Several films that are his works are Bolt (2008), Tangled (2010), and

Zootopia (2016). The second director of this film is Rich Moore who was born

on May 10, 1963. He is also a film director, producer, scriptwriter, and voice

actor at Walt Disney, United States. There are two films he has worked on,

namely Wreck-it Ralph (2012) and zootopia (2016).

In the Zootopia film, although the main character is a female rabbit,

the main character in this film, the concept of masculinity, will be interesting

to analyze with deconstruction theory. There are several parts of dialogue

(speech), behavior, and thoughts that look more masculine than usual that can
6

be analyzed. The uniqueness of this character will break the idea that only

men can be masculine. Here in accordance with the theory of deconstruction

that has been put forward by Jacques Derrida. The concept of masculinity is

not only fixed on men but also women.

Based on the previous study that researchers have found, there are

several studies that have used derrida's theory of deconstruction. But none of

the previous researchers in the previous study conducted research on

masculinity in female characters in a film. As in the example of research by

LiaFadhilah (2011) with the title "Deconstruction Analysis on Major Female

Character in Film A Destiny of Her Own". She analyzed the deconstructed

feminist of the main female character in the film A Destiny of Her Own. Her

research focuses on the main character's relationship with deconstruction and

feminism. Another research is a research by Gita Purnama Sari (2017) with

the title is "Deconstruction of Macho Concept at Character of Gregory in

Seventh Son Film". In this study, the researcher focused on analyzing the

character Gregory through the macho conceot which. Next example is

research by Sulistyowati (2017) with the title is “The Hero’s Journey Analysis

of Judy Hopps in Zootopia Movie”. This study is about how the theory of

Hero’s Journey by Joseph Campbell applied in Zootopia movie. And for last

research is a study by MaulanyNabilla and Nita Novianti (2019) with the title

is “Masculinity of a Major Female Character in Joel Coen’s The Big

Lebowski”. It is a research about female masculinity traits in the film use the

theory by Levant (1995).

7

In this study, the researcher explains the concept of masculinity on the

main character Judy Hopps in Byron Howard and Rich Moore's Zootopia film

using the deconstruction theory approach. Researchers chose the animated

film by Byron Howard and Rich Moore because this animated film, the main

character JoodyHopps reflects the deconstructive side strongly. This study will

discuss about how deconstructive side is applied on Judy Hopps in

Zootopiafim.

This research is expected not only to find out how the deconstruction

concept occurs. But in real life, especially in the field of education, this

concept or thought can be used as a rationale so that there is no longer the

thought that women are different from men. This research can also train you to

think critically. With this theory we can further analyze a situation or event,

not just sticking to the old paradigm. What the researcher will do is analyze

how the main character of JoodyHopps is described and the focus of this

research is on the concept of masculinity using a descriptive approach. That's

why researchers chose Walt Disney animated films to be analyzed. With the

title "Deconstruction Analysis Of Masculinity Applied On Judy Hopps In

Zootopia Film"

B. Scope and Limitation of the Study

Researcher was interested in analyzing the animated film produced by

Walt Disney, by Byron Howard and Rich Moore, published in 2016. The

scope of this research was deconstruction theory that was voiced by

8

Derridawhich paid attention to the concept of masculinity in the main

characters in the film. Researcher limited the research to analyzing the concept

of masculinity in the main character of the animated film Zootopia by Byron

Howard and Rich Moore.

C. Statement of the Problems

Based on the background of the study above, the researcher

formulates the problem of the study as follows:

1. How was main character Judy Hopps depicted in Zootopia film?

2. How deconstructionin the concept of masculinity appliedon Judy Hopps in

Zootopia film?

D. Objectives of the Study

Related to the formulation of the problem above, the researcher stated

the research objectives as follows:

1. To described the main character Judy Hopps in Zootopia film

2. To found out the deconstruction in concept of masculinity of the main

character, Judy Hopps in the film Zootopia

E. Significances of the Study

Based on the research objectives, the researcher hopes that this

research is useful for readers. Researchers also write down some of the

benefits of the research as follows:

9

1. Theoriticaly

This research is expected to provide knowledge and change

understanding for the community, especially students in interpreting messages

in a literary work, especially films using deconstructive thinking that adopted

from Derrida’s deconstruction theory.

2. Practically

This research is expected to be useful for other researchers as a reference

in researching literary works. In practice, in the learning process, teachers are

expected to be more able to help students who want to express their opinions

regardless of gender, while students are expected to be more critical thinking

and not stick to old thoughts. More able to provide opinions accompanied by

logical arguments.

F. Definition of Keyterms

1. Deconstruction

Deconstruction is a critique of literary works that influences the way to

break old paradigms or general assumptions with contradictory

meanings such as break the paradigm that masculinity can be found

only in man. but in fact, it also can be found in woman.

2. Masculinity

The concept of masculinity is a description for dialogues, behavior,

and thoughts that related to men.Masculine concept are about

confidence, ability to hiding emotions, self reliance, and strength.

10

3. Character

Main characters are figures that hold an important role part and high

intensity in each struggle that builds a story. There are some types of

main character such as round character and flat character.

4. Film

A film is one of literary work that is included into fiction, because a

film is a realization of a novel or writer’s thinking.

5. Zootopia film

Zootopia is a 3D animated film that directed by Byron Howard and

Rich Moore which was released in February, 2016. This animated film

is one of the films under the Walt Disney Pictures company and is a

production of Walt Disney Animation Studios.

G. Research Method

1. Research Design

This analysis of deconstructive movie is used a qualitative method.

The qualitative study intents on examining the phenomenon around society.

According to Ary (2010:420) a qualitative approach is used to study social

phenomena and states that the goals and methods of social science are in

principle the same as those of the natural and physical sciences. There are

several types of qualitative research methods used to analyze data. Here, the

researcher uses a descriptive qualitative method to analyze the data.

Descriptive qualitative method is intended to describe something related to the

research topic.
11

In this study, researcher uses a qualitative research design to describe

how the main character of Zootopia film was depicted. And second is to

describe the concept of masculinity in the main characters in the film Zootopia

through Deconstruction theory by Derrida. The classification of the two types

of depiction of the main character and the corresponding classification of the

concept of masculinity will be explained using the appropriate sentences.

2. Approach

In this study, the researcher used deconstruction as an approach. The

deconstruction approach is one of the approaches to analyzing literary works

such as films. Researchers use the deconstruction approach because

deconstruction is an ideology of thought that focuses on voicing new thoughts.

Deconstruction was voiced by Jacques Derrida in the 1960s as a new approach

in analyzing literature work. It has the main point for appearing hidden

meanings in literary works.

3. Source of the Data and data

The source of the data in this research is the film Zootopia that

published in 2016 and was downloaded from sogafime. The primary data used

by researchers in this study are script and scenes of the character Judy Hops in

Zootopia film. Researchers find data from the visuals in the film. Data are

shots / scenes, event, practices, sign, and the dialogue of the film that

appropriate with the depiction of the main character and masculinity concept

use deconstruction approach.

4. Instrument of the Study

12

Instrument is a tool used by researchers to collect data to be analyzed.

In this study, researchers used qualitative research, which means that the

instrument in this study was the researcher herself. The main instrument in

qualitative research is the human instrument. Based on the above statement,

means that human instrument is the key instrument to collected the data of the

research. And for the secondary instrument, researcher uses the table to

classify and analyze the data.

In this research, the researcher tries to get qualitative data about

deconstructive characters related to the concept of masculinity by seeing the

film repeatedly and understanding the contents of the story. After that, collect

data and classify the main character in the Zootopia film.

5. Procedure of Collecting Data

There are several stages that conducted by researcher to collecting the

data as follows:

a. Watch the film repeatedly

Researcher watch the film repeatedly after downloaded from sogafime

website and paid much attention in the main character in Zootopia

film.

b. Read the script of Zootopia film

Researcher find the script of Zootopia film was downloaded from

Zootopia Fandom and read it repeatedly. Then, researcher match it

with the film.

c. Focus on main character, and collect the data

13

Researcher focus on identify the main character in Zootopia film then

collect the data that could be put as data of each deconstruction of

main character in Zootopia film by captured some scenes from the

film.

6. Procedure of Analyzing the Data

In analyzing the data, researcher focuses in main character in Zootopia

film to find the answer of the problems. According to Miles (2014: 31)there

three steps of procedure and technique that researcher takes as follows:

a. Data condensation

Researcher identifies the data from the Zootopia film that match with

the depiction of main character, deconstruction theory and masculinity

concept.

b. Data display

1) Coding

Researcher classifies the data that match with the depiction of main

character of Zootopia film and also match with deconstruction theory

and masculinity concept at main character in Zootopia film into the

table 1.1 and 1.2 below:

2) Analysis

Researcher analyzed how main character in Zootopia depicted and how

the masculinity concept that shows in main character in Zootopia film

through deconstruction approach. It based on the dialogue, behavior,

and the thought of the main character.

c. Drawing and verifying conclusion

The meanings emerging from the data have to be tested. For their

plausibility, sturdiness, and confirmability, that is validity. Then,

researcher holds these conclusions lightly, maintaining openness and

skepticism

1) Validation

A data in research can be trusted if the validity of the data can be

justified. According to Carter (2014) triangulation identifies as four

types namely: (1) methodological triangulation, (2) data triangulation,

(3) theoretical triangulation and (4) investigator triangulation.

In this study, researcher used the investigator triangulation to do the

validation of the data. The data validator was an expert person in literature and

was a lecture that teach literary appreciation. The validator was given the table of

data (see appendix 2). The steps that took to get validation of data to answer the

problem statement are:

1. Researcher chose a validator that competent and expert, with the

exception thesis advisor.

20

2. Researcher gave the basic knowledge by oral and indicator to the

validator

3. Validator read and understood well about the Zootopia film

4. Validator check the classification of the film into the depiction of main

character and deconstruction in masculinity concept.

5. When the validator check in the valid column, the data declared valid

or objective. While the validator check in the invalid column, the data

are considered invalid and subjective and need to be review by the

second validator.

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

In this chapter reviews some theories and literature that related with

this research. This chapter is divided into three sub-chapters those are

theoretical background that contains literature, film as literary work, character,

deconstruction, masculinity concept, and Zootopia film. Second sub-chapter is

previous study, and last is theoretical framework.

A. Theoretical Background

1. Literature

Literature is everything that wrote by someone or people. It can be

fiction or non-fiction. The meaning is, literature is able to read, enjoy, and

appreciated. In Castle (2007:8), literature is about everything written by

someone or people, that contains “creativeness” of writer, no matter what

he or she writes in it. Those opinions are in same idea, they talk about

everything that are printed or written, which contains creativeness of

writers. If a literature has been made into printing or writing on some

papers, it can be called as literary works. After understanding about what

literature is, people should move to literary genres. Literary genres is a

part which explain kinds of literature, or it can be called as classification

of literature. The classification of genres depends on tone, content, literary

technique, or length (in a fiction). Some genres of literature are (1) fable,

fairy tale, folklore; (2) fiction; (3) fantasy; etc. The visualization of literary

29
30

genres is accepted, such as a novel becomes a movie or another. Not only

movies, musics and theatre are also the visualization of literary works. As

a devotee of literary works, people may also give some critics to the

literary works, it can be called as literary appreciation. Appreciation comes

from word “appreciate” means that people do some activities to “respect”

the literary works. Olufunwa (2001) in his article, states that literary

appreciation is an activity to evaluate someone’s literary works, as an

academic and intellectual exercise. In appreciating literary works, people

should understand about the language, structures of literary works, and

some approaches to give more understanding in literary works.

2. Film as Literary Work

a. Definition of Film

The development of literature is very blooming, from textual to

visual. It happened due to advances in science and technology. Literary

works in the form of short stories, novels and dramas can now be enjoyed

in the form of films.

Film is an audiovisual media. According to Stafford (2011:85) film

is moving picture that is contains some aspects such as music, dialogue,

sound effects, editing, lighting, and acting. In this case the film can make

the audience get carried away in the flow of the film's story and raise the

emotion as long as the director of the film can unite all the elements of the

film properly. On the other hand, films can also be referred to as movie,

motion picture, and cinema. Film carries something to share and it is

projected.
31

b. Definition of Animation Film

One of the genres in film is animation. Animation is a series of

continuous fast motion pictures that have a relationship with one another.

In this study, the researchers chose to use a 3D animated film produced by

the largest animation company, Walt Disney. Why animated films? Over

time, films as literary works do not only use humans as actors. Many

animated films are now also produced with stories that still contain literary

value, only turning human actors into characters who can describe the

desired characteristics. Based on the animation material made by Dian

Nuswantoro University (UDINUS), there are 12 animation principles that

make animation more real. That is:

1. Timing

Determine the motion of the animation is natural or not.

2. Ease in Ease Out

Each movement has a different speed.

3. Ares

Movement in real life follows a pattern or pathway called Ares.

4. Follow Through and Overlapping Action

Small movements that keep moving even though the body has

stopped.

5. Secondary Action

Extra character movement.

6. Squash and stretch

Flexibility of movement of objects.

32

7. Exaggeration

Exaggerate animations with music, backgrounds or images.

8. Straight Ahead and Pose to Pose

Straight ahead refers to the frame by frame manufacturing

technique. Pose to pose using the keyframe technique.

9. Anticipation

The prefix of the move or square off.

10. Staging

Covers how the environment is made to support the

atmosphere.

11. Personality

Details of a character's personality, for example, date of birth,

hobbies, traits.

12. Appeal

The overall look or visual style of the animation.

With these 12 principles, animated films will not deviate from the

value of literary works even though the characters are made differently but

the value in the story remains in accordance with real life.

3. Character

In the study of literary works is an in-depth study of literary works

literature from the various elements that make up it. These elements include

intrinsic and extrinsic elements. One of the intrinsic elements in the film is the

character.
33

Character is a depiction of someone in dramatic and narrative work. The

character interpreter is the writer and the reader or audience, which is a

process of judging moral, intellectual, and emotional qualities by concluding a

dialogue or action (Abrams, 2005:42). The character has many depictions in

the film. Some describe the masculine impression that male characters usually

play. But now there are several films that depict masculine concept played by

female characters.

Character is the person that playing in the story. It is regularly the creator

her or himself and person that the creator knows. According to Boggs and

Pertie (in Fadhillah 2011: 20) There are some types of main character such as

round character which is competent to surprise the reader because of

development of characteristic. In differentiate, flat character is the character

which is unfit of surprising the reader because there is no change of

characteristic. Additionally, the two characters are the major and minor

character. Major character incorporates protagonist and antagonist who take

very important position in the story while the minor character who does not

truly imperative but has clear work in the story. Character as the on-screen

actor of the story can be categorized into a few types depending on where we

are in terms of categorizing. In terms of the role character in the story can be

separated into a major character and a minor character.

Main characters are figures that hold an important role part and high

intensity in each struggle that builds a story, and they will moreover as a rule

be complex and completely created. According to Jerome (in Ardini 2017:24)

the main character is not only at the center of the action, but also the chief
34

object of the play wrights concern. Characterizing of the character of the

protagonist sometimes by comparison with a competitor (enemy) or antagonist

regularly gets to be consuming interest of the play, and the action appears to

be planned to illustrate, or clarify, or develop that character some of the time

make him or her complex, unfathomable, and mysterious being.

The main character is the highlight point within the story, almost in

eachportion story main character continuouslyappeared. In other words, the

main character is individual or thing that's most frequently told in a storyline.

Additional character who is simply told in certain parts, because told not

implies additional characters do not have a partwithin the story.

Ordinarilyadditional character has been linked with the most character, either

coordinate or indirect linkage.

The qualifications between the main character and the additional

protagonist and antagonist are frequently combined, so that it gets to be the

protagonist of main character, additional character of protagonist, the main

characters of antagonist, and etc. Within the drama, the characters live out a

story without any comments of the creator, giving the gathering of audience a

direct introduction of characters’ life encounters which called characterization.

Characterization may be aliterarydevicethat is utilized step by step in literature

to highlight and clarify the details approximately a character in a story. It is

within the initial stage where the authorpresents the character with

discerniblerise and then taking after the presentation of the character.

35

4. Deconstruction

The deconstruction was initiated by the French philosopher Jacques

Derrida. The concept of deconstruction originated from Derrida's critique of

structuralism. In structuralism, a word is a hierarchical binary opposition

which means one is better, for example white is better than black, height is

better than short, etc. This is what led to the emergence of the concept of

deconstruction because the structural concept was considered more

discriminatory. For Derrida, the meaning in a word is not stable. There is no

concept or marker in one word that is absolute for Derrida, because the

definition of one word has a series of other words that are never complete to

explain a single word.

Deconstructive is an approach which refuse the traditional assumption

that language is able to point out the reality accurately. The deconstructionists

give some critics that language is an “uncertain medium”. For example, the

word “house”, can not only have the meaning about house itself, but also

another complex meanings. Finally, the deconstructionist critics tend to stress

about how the language use in a text, not what is being spoken or said.

Derrida rejects the existence of hierarchical structural old thoughts (white

/ black, positive / negative, short / tall, and so on). Hierarchical here means

there is a higher or better status. Derrida's thought assumes that language is

unstable, structure is unstable, and meaning is unstable. Derrida understands

signs as marks that have no own weight, for him there are no signs because
36

they are all markers. A meaning in a word has a trace (tracing) that will

require another marker that will never be complete to explain that one word.

The name deconstruction was token from Derrida’s practice, his technique

of dissecting and disassemblingwritings or, more usually, parts of writings in

arrange to uncover their irregularities and inner contradictions. Deconstruction

is regularlyalluded to as post-structural or postmodern. This hypothesis exists

as aengineer of the old thoughts contained within

theauxiliaryscholarlyhypothesis. A basichypothesis that consider a content to

contain a substantial meaning in a total structure in a

specificdialectframework. All of usually opposed by the nearness of

deconstruction or post-structural hypothesis. Post-structural is additionally a

thought that's one step ahead of innovation. Post-structural is unimaginable

without structural.

Deconstruction lays uncovered man’s determinedencourageto connect his

life and his speculations with widespread and unceasing truth. It distinguishes

the philosophicaltheme in epistemology and aesthetics because itshows itself

in writings. Derrida writes: “The theme of homogeneity, the

philosophicalthemestandardbrilliance, is what must be destroyed” Derrida

1982a: 64 (in Florentsen 1996: 95)

Derrida's study of Western mysticism centers on its privileging of the

spoken word over the composed word. The talked word is given a better

value because the speaker and audience are both display to the expression

simultaneously. There is no transient or spatial remove between speaker,

37

discourse, and listener since the speaker listens himself talk at the same

minute the audience does. This quickness appears to guarantee the idea that

within the talked word we know what we mean, mean what we say, say what

we mean, and know what we have said. Whether or not idealize

understanding continuously happens in reality, this picture of impeccably

self-present meaning is, concurring to Derrida, the fundamental perfect of

Western culture.

According to Derrida 1981:10 (in Andini 2017: 19) has termed this

belief in the self-presentation of meaning "Logocentrism," from the Greek

word Logos (meaning speech, logic, reason, the Word of God). Writing, on

the other hand, is considered by the logocentric system to be only a

representation of speech, a secondary substitute designed for use only when

speaking is impossible.

5. Masculinity Concept

Masculinity is a description for dialogues, behavior, and thoughts that

related to men. And for masculine concept are about confidence, ability to

hiding emotions, self reliance, and strength. Someone can be said to have

masculinity are those who have:

1. Confidence, that is people who have confidence with the body form

and confidence with the behavior and skills.

2. Second, can hiding their emotions, namely good in hiding emotions in

good attitude because most people who have masculinity prefer to feel

their own emotions without having to vent.

38

3. Next is to have self-reliance, which is good at solving the problems,

the ability to do or face problems alone.

4. Lastly is strength, which is having power and being able to dominate

and having the ability to fight back.

The definition of masculinity is socially and biologically created. Here

masculinity is different from gender because both men and women can have

masculine traits. The characteristics attached to the term masculinity are

courage, independence and assertiveness.

According to Connell’s theory (in Wedgwood 2009) masculinity and

femininity are inherently relational concepts, which have meaning in relation

to each other, as a social demarcation and a cultural opposition.

Based on the theory put forward by Connell, it can be concluded that the

concept of masculinity can also be owned by women. The concept of

masculinity that is owned by women can be called feminine masculinity. The

concept of masculinity is frequentlysolelyrelated with men, until the

development of modern concept called feminine masculinity that broke the

early idea of manlinessadditionally challenged the thought of

conventionalmanliness.feminine masculinity has inspired numerous studies

regarding the analysis of masculinity found in women, especially in literature

field. the masculinity of female characters in literature works by showing their

masculine traits.

One of theory of feminine masculinity was proposed by Judith Halberstam

in her book with the title Female Masculinity (1998). Halberstam proposed a
39

modernhypothesis called feminine masculinity. The hypothesis propounds that

masculinityis not chained with male bodies, instep, masculinity can moreover

be found in women. Agreeing to her, consideringfeminine masculinity is one

of the numerous ways to completelyget it the conception of masculinity itself.

According to Levant, 1995 (in Nabilla and Novianti, 2019) there are some

indicators that depicted the concept of masculinity namely confidence, hiding

emotion, self reliance, and strength.

6. Zootopia Film

In the Zootopia film, although the main character is a female rabbit, the

main character in this film, the concept of masculinity, will be interesting to

analyze with deconstruction theory. There are several parts of dialogue

(speech), behavior, and thoughts that look more masculine than usual that can

be analyzed. The uniqueness of this character will break the idea that only

men can be masculine. Here in accordance with the theory of deconstruction

40

that has been put forward by Jacques Derrida. The concept of masculinity is

not only fixed on men but also women.

B. Previous Study

Researchers used four previous studies obtained from theses and journal.

Two previous studies used deconstruction theory as an approach. And for

another two use hero’s journey theory and female masculinity theory. The four

previous studies are:

LiaFadhilah (2011) with the title "Deconstruction Analysis on Major

Female Character in Film A Destiny of Her Own". The analystcenters on the

examination of the character utilizing Jacques Derrida`s Deconstruction

theory. The think about concerns on the deconstructed women's activist

characteristic of the major female character in A Destiny of Her Own movie.

The researcherused qualitative descriptive analysis to analyze the relationship

between the most character, deconstruction, and feminism. The researcher

found that Veronica is adeterminedlady. In another view, utilizing

deconstruction theory the studyrecognizesa fewcontrasts about Veronica

characteristic which is deconstructed is deconstructed are decisive and

independent.

Second previous study is research by Gita Purnama Sari (2017) with the

title is "Deconstruction of Macho Concept at Character of Gregory in Seventh

Son Film". In this study, the researcher focused on analyzing the character

Gregory through the macho conceot which. Based on the theory put forward
41

by Sergei Bodrov at the main character is different from the macho concept by

Gauntlett (2008) and Salisbury (2004), this research was focused to analyze

the story by using Derrida's deconstruction theory. Based on these views,

Bodrov describe that the main character especially Gregory has bad

appearance, he has not role as protector, director, and provider. His qualities

do not fulfill the qualities of real man and his behavior is far from the behavior

of real man.

Third previous study is a research by Sulistyowati (2017) with the title is

“The Hero’s Journey Analysis of Judy Hopps in Zootopia Movie”. This study

is about how the theory of Hero’s Journey by Joseph Campbell applied in

Zootopia movie. In this research, researcher focused on the theory of heroism

by Joseph Campbell. From the research, the conclusion is the application of

heroism that explained by Joseph Campbell has suitability with the main

character in Zootopia movie.

Last previous study is the research by MaulanyNabilla and Nita Novianti

(2019) with the title is “Masculinity of a Major Female Character in Joel

Coen’s The Big Lebowski”. It is a research about female masculinity traits in

the film use the theory by Levant (1995). This research used the kodialogues,

a number of mise en scene aspects, namely properties, costumes, hair do and

makeup, and also cinematography aspects such as camera shots, angles and

frame. The result of this research proves that masculinity can also be perfomed

with an absence of male body form.

Figure 1.1 Theoritical Framework

First, researcher explains about literature. In general, literature is

understood as form of human activity that belongs to art and the uses of

language as material. Simply, literature is when we produce and use the

original or unusual writing, or we can say “creativeness” without thinking

about what we write (Castle, 2007).

43

Researcher use one of literary work name is film. Film is an audiovisual

media. According to Stafford (2011:85) film is moving picture that is

contains some aspects such as music, dialogue, sound effects, editing,

lighting, and acting. In this case the film can make the audience get carried

away in the flow of the film's story and raise the emotion.

Next researcher uses the Zootopia film to be analyzed. Zootopia film is the

American 3D animated fiction film was directed by Byron Howard and Rich

Moore which was released in February, 2016. This animated film is one of

the films under the Walt Disney Pictures company and is a production of

Walt Disney Animation Studios.

In this research, researcher focuses on analyzing about the types of main

character Judy Hopps using depiction of main character as round or flat

character. For the approach researcher uses deconstruction (Jacques Derrida,

1982) that focuses on analyzing the concept of masculinity (Ronald F.

Levant, 1995) in the main character Judy Hopps.

CHAPTER III

FINDING AND DISCUSSION

In this chapter, researcher discussed about the result of the collected

and analyzed data to find the answer that based on the problems

statements. Researcher provided limitations on this research in the

previous chapter. The object that became the research focus was the film

Zootopia directed by Byron Howard and Rich Moore. To be more specific,

the researcher only focused on the main character and took data in the

form of scenes and scripts from the filmthat appropriate with the depiction

of the main character and masculinity concept use deconstruction

approach. Researcher found the depiction of the main character in the

Zootopia film using a flat character. Researcher also found that there were

4 types of masculinity concepts in the film (confidence, hiding emotions,

self reliance, and strength). All data were obtained from the Zootopiafilm,

all data were analyzed using the deconstruction approach by Derrida.

A. Research Findings

Researcher found data from the object using descriptive analysis.

Researchers reported the results of their research based on research

problems, 1) How is main character Judy Hopps depicted in Zootopia

film?, and 2) How are deconstruction in the concept of masculinity on

Judy Hopps in Zootopia film?. it were specified as follows:

44
45

1. Depiction of The main Character

For the first is the depiction of the main charater. The researcher

found that of two types of depictions of a character namely flat and round

character, in this film the depiction of the main character was a flat

character. There were several scenes and dialogues in the film that have

shown that the main character in the Zootopia film named Judy Hopps was

a character that was included in the flat character. Judy Hopps was the

main character in the film Zootopia, Judy was a rabbit who has a dream to

become a cop. All her friends, even her parents, didn't believe and

underestimate Judy's dreams and desires. To proved it, there were many

things and obstacles that Judy had to go through. She also managed to

prove all the talk about her dream and her wishes and it came true.

Nothing has changed from the main character, making the character said as

a flat character.

Then, researcher wants to explain how was main character Judy

Hopps depicted in Zootopia Film as follows:

Proof of ideals that are underestimated

First evidence:

First picture’s dialogue in the beginning of film:

Judy Hoops:I’m going to be police officer.

46

Gideon Grey: Bunny cop? That is the most stupidest thing I ever heard.
Judy Hoops: It may seem impossible to small minds. I’m looking at you
Gideon Grey.

Second picture’s dialogue in the middle of film:

Mayor of Zootopia: As mayor of Zootopia, I am proud to announce that

my mammal inclusion... initiative, has produced its first police academy
graduate. Valedictorian of her class, ZPD's very first rabbit officer... Judy
Hopps. Assistant Mayor Bellwether, her badge.
Assistant Mayor Bellwether: Oh, yes, yes!
Judy Hoops: Thank you.
Mayor of Zootopia: Judy, it is my great privilege to officially assign you to
the heart of Zootopia... Precinct One.City Center.
Zootopia film (ZF/JH/Flat)

The pictures captured on 00:02:30-00:02:50 and 00:07:17-

00:07:50. There it was illustrated that at the main character of Judy Hopps had

the ambition to become the first rabbit cop. As the story progressed in the middle

to the end of the story, the Judy Hopps figure remained with his stance and

succeeded in realizing her desire. It was described that Judy was a different with

other bunnies who became a farmer. As a child, Judy said loudly that she wanted

to become a cop. Because of her dream, she was belittled by her friends because

she didn't exist and there would not be a rabbit policeman in where she lived.

Gideon Gray, one of Judy's friends, said that all Judy's dreams were just stupid

things he had heard. But Judy gave confidence and gave a statement that if there

really wasn't a rabbit cop in her residence, then she would be the first to become a

rabbit cop in her residence.

After growing up Judy decided to take police training. In the

training, Judy experienced obstacles that she had to face alone to prove

that she could become the first rabbit cop. After many efforts, she finally

managed to graduate from the police training. Judy has proven that she can
47

become the first female rabbit policeman in her place of residence, even

becoming the best graduate of the police training.

In this description, it can be concluded that the main character of this Judy

Hopps is depicted with a flat character because there are no changes that can

surprise the audience. From the first time Judy said she wanted to be the first

rabbit cop in her neighborhood, in the end she was able to prove that she could

become the first female rabbit cop in her neighborhood. As a spectator of the

Zootopia film, there was one scene that shows if Judy had given up on her dream

but that did not affect the overall depiction of the main character Judy Hopps in

the film. Judy was still portrayed as a strong figure in her stance.

Second evidence:

First picture’s dialogue in the beginning of film:

Mother: What your father means, hon, is that it's gonna be difficult,
impossible even... for you to become a police officer.
Father: Right. There's never been a bunny cop.
Mother: No.
Father: Buunies don’t do that
Mother: Never.
Father: Never.
Judy Hopps: Well... Then I guess I'll have to be the first one. Because I am
gonna make the world a better place!
48

Second pinture’s dialogue in the middle of film:

Judy Hopps: Hey! Officer Hopps. You ready to make the world a better
place?
Another officer: attention!!
Chief Bogo: All right. All right. Everybody sit. I've got three items on the
docket. First, we need to acknowledge the elephant in the room. Francine,
Happy birthday. Number two. There are some new recruits with us I
should introduce, but I'm not going to because... I don't care.

Third picture’s dialogue in the end of film

Judy Hopps: Try to make the world a better place.OFFICER Nicholas P.

WildeLook inside yourself and recognize that change starts with you. It
starts with me.It starts with all of us.

Zootopia film (ZF/JH/Flat)

The pictures was captured on 00:03:30-00:03:45, 00:14:44-

00:15:25 and 01:34:15-01:34:35. That described that Judy tried to

convince her parents that her dream to become a rabbit cop was not an

impossible thing. It was also shown that Judy Hopps' parents also tried to

convince Judy that it was better for her to continue her family business,

farming. Judy's father said that if there was not a rabbit who managed to

become a member of the police in the neighborhood. That was due to the

view that the rabbit was a species that was weak and small in posture.

They were deemed incapable of carrying out the strenuous tasks that

normally only officers of a large species could carry out.

In this film, it was depicted once again that the main character Judy

Hopps with a flat character. In the beginning she believed she would

change the world to a better place by becoming a police officer. In the

middle of the film she was still solid with her desire to make the world a
49

better place. The flat character here was how the main character stays on

the existing storyline without changing the character's attitude. In other

words, the flat character has a fixed character without any changes that

make the audience surprised. But even though she was a flat character, the

main character Judy Hopps in this Zootopia film has a complex storyline

with several problems to be faced. But all this did not reduce her desire

from the start and could prove that everything could come true.

2. Deconstruction of Masculinity Concept

Second was the deconstruction of masculinity concept. The theory

used in this analysis was the theory of masculinity concept in a person as

proposed by Levant (1995). In this analysis, the researcher found that there

were 4 points that can be categorized as masculinity concepts namely 1)

confidence, 2) hiding emotion, 3) self reliance, and for the last 4) Strength.

All of that were analyzed with the deconstruction approach proposed by

Derrida.

The main character Judy Hopps in the film Zootopia was a tough

female rabbit who has all four points of masculinity. Even though she was

described as a woman, she has high confidence, could handle emotions

well, could face problems that come to her just by herself, and could even

help friends in dealing with problems, and finally, she has the power to

defend herself by striking back. Masculinity concepts are all unusual and

not common in a woman. But it could be proven that the masculinity

concept also could grow and exist in a woman.

50

Then, researcher wants to explain how were deconstruction in the

concept of masculinity on Judy Hopps in Zootopia film were follows:

1) Confidence

. Confidence is people who have confidence with the body form and

confidence with the behavior and skills

a. Confidence in dream

Mother: What your father means, hon, is that it's gonna be

difficult, impossible even... for you to become a police officer
Father: Right. There's never been a bunny cop.
Mother: No.
Father: Buunies don’t do that.
Judy Hopps: Well... Then I guess I'll have to be the first one.
Because I am gonna make the world a better place!

Zootopia film (1/D/MC:C/JH/ZF)

That picture was captured on 00:03:30. That described

about the main character Judy Hopps that was depicted has the

ambition to become the first female rabbit cop who previously had

no female rabbit police, but his friend mocked her and said that

Judy was only a dream, and Judy answered loudly that he would be

the first to become a rabbit cop and Judy wanted to make the world

a better place. The distrust from everyone including her own

parents didn't discourage Judy. She convinced everyone that he

could make it all happen.

51

Here it can be seen that Judy hopps has a strong confidence

in its establishment. This strong self-confidence could make the

main character Judy Hoppsmore sure of herself if she could prove

everything she said. Here you could see the masculinity that was

embedded in Judy by looking at her self-confidence.

b. Confidence in your own strength

Coach: Just quit and go home, fuzzy bunny.

All Police members: There's never been a bunny cop. Never.Just a
stupid carrot-farming dumb bunny.
(Judy Hopps keep trying and practicing. he beat the rest of the
police.)
Zootopia film (4/D/MC:C/JH/ZF)
This scene captured on 00:06:40-00:07:00. That scene

shows that Judy never gives up and always tries. Judy managed to

enter police training in her city. At the beginning of the training,

Judy was always unable to keep up and followed the training well.

The views of all her fellow trainees thought that Judy was a weak

and useless rabbit. Not only the views of his peers, but the trainer

also saw Judy as a weak rabbit and even told her to give up and

return to her house. In the middle of the scene, Judy thought and

realized that she needed to train even harder to achieve her wish.

She practiced all day from morning to night. In the end, the next

day when Judy's practice had returned to her confidence again. With

52

her small body and her strength that is considered weak, Judy

managed to beat her other comrades with her own strength.

In the description above, it can be seen that Judy has

tremendous confidence in herself. She realized she was just a little

female rabbit who was considered weak. But she believe and

confident. strength and self-confidence that are commonly seen in

male characters. But all of that can also be owned by female

characters.

c. Confidence in carrying out duties

Chief Bogo: And finally, our first bunny, Officer Hopps. Parking
duty. Dismissed
Judy Hopps: Parking duty? Chief? Chief Bogo? Sir. You said
there were fourteen missing mammal cases.
Chief Bogo: So?
Judy Hopps: So I can handle one.You probably forgot but, I was
top of my class at the academy.
Zootopia film (7/D/MC:C/JH/ZF)
This picture captured on 00:16:00-00:16:22. There it was

illustrated that Judy managed to become the first female rabbit cop.

And that day was her first day serving in the capital Zootopia. On

her first day, Judy was excited to accept her first assignment. There

were 14 cases of missing animals. Chief Bogo, as the head of the

police, gave his members the task of looking for the animals. All
53

members got their respective duties. Finally, it's Judy's job, chief

Bogo gave Judy the task of patrolling on the road and giving a

ticket to people whose parking period has expired. Judy did not

accept the new task. Judy tried to convince Chief Bogo of his

ability to complete the same task as her other friends. But chief

Bogo rejected it and belittled her.

Here it can be seen that Judy was confident in herself to be

able to complete her first assignment. Judy said that of the 14 cases

she could overcome one of them. She confident in her abilities

because she was the best graduate from the previous academy or

police training. But its leader, chief Bogo, did not care about any of

that. Judy's confidence to face a case is a masculine trait that can

also be found in a woman, not only in men.

Mrs. Otterton: His name is Emmitt Otterton.

Chief Bogo: Yes. I know.
Mrs. Otterton: He's a florist. We have 2 beautiful children. He
would never just disappear.
Chief Bogo: Ma'am, our detectives are very busy.
Mrs. Otterton: Please. There's gotta be somebody to find my
Emmitt.
Chief Bogo: Mrs. Otterton.
Judy Hopps: I will find him.
Mrs. Otterton: Oh. Thank you! Bless you, bless you, little bunny!
Take this. Find my Emmitt. Bring him home to me and my babies.
Please.
Chief Bogo: Mrs. Otterton. Please wait out here.
54

Mrs. Otterton: Of course. Oh, thank you both so much! One

second.
Chief Bogo: You're fired.
Judy Hopps: What? Why?
Chief Bogo: Insubordination! Now. I'm going to open this door,
and you're goind to tell that Otter you're a former meter maid with
delusion of grandeur, who will not be taking the case.

Zootopia film (11/D/MC:C/JH/ZF)

The picture captured on 00:32:10-00:33:05. This illustrated

that one of the families of one of the missing animals came to the

police station and wanted her husband Mr. Otterton was soon

found. But chief Bogo delayed solving the case. Mrs. Otterton kept

pleading with Chief Bogo to comply with his request. In the middle

of a conversation between Mrs. Otterton and chief Bogo, Judy said

that she would take and solve the case. He believes that she could

solve the case to prove herself worthy of being recognized as a

member of the police. Chief Bogo told Mrs. Otterton to leave the

room and he talked privately with Judy Hopps. Chief Bogo

unilaterally fired Judy Hopps. Judy did not accept Chief Bogo's

treatment. Chief Bogo gives Judy a grace period of 24 hours

otherwise Judy will remain fired. Judy agreed and began to solve

the case.

In the explanation above, it can be seen that Judy has strong

confidence in her ability to solve cases. A serious case she believes

would be solved even within a grace period. Judy Hopps' self-

confidence illustrated a masculine mindset and character that exists

in women.
55

2) Hiding Emotion

Hiding emotion means that good in hiding emotions in good

attitude because most people who have masculinity prefer to feel their

own emotions without having to vent.

a. Hiding emotions when underestimated

Judy Hopps: A 100 tickets. I'm not gonna write 100 tickets. I'm
gonna write 200 tickets. Before noon.

Zootopia film (8/D/MC:HE/JH/ZF)

This scene was captured on 00:16:33-00:16:41. This picture

illustrated about Judy and her chief in police office. Chief Bogo

gave Judy the first assignment as a policeman on duty at the

roadside parking lot to ticket drivers who have expired their

parking grace period. It's all not according to Judy's expectations

who want the task to solve a case. Chief Bogo did not care about

any of that, he keeps Judy Hopps in charge of the parking cop. Judy

was angry and disappointed by the leader's decision.

In this scene, Judy restrained her anger and disappointment

towards Chief Bogo. Judy tried not to get angry about her

disappointment. Judy continued to accept the assignment decisions

that Chief Bogo has given. Instead, she believes and was more

enthusiastic about doing her job and trying to exceed the set target.
56

b. Hiding emotion when far away and miss her parents

Judy Hopps: Oh, hey, it's my parents!

Mom & Dad: Oh, there she is! Hi, Sweetheart! Hey there, Jude the
Dude. How was your first day on the force?
Judy Hopps: It was real great!
Mom: Yeah? Everything you ever hoped?
Judy Hopps: Absolutely. And more. Everyone's so nice, and I feel
like... I'm really making a difference.
Dad: Wait a second. Holy cranks, Bon. Look at that!
Mom: Oh, my sweet heaven!
Judy, are you a meter maid?
Judy Hopps: Oh, this.. No! Oh, no. This is just a temporary thing.

Zootopia film (9/D/MC:HE/JH/ZF)

This picture captured on 00:26:45-00:27:20. This scene

described that Judy Hopps stay jfar from her neighborhood and she

missed her parents. There it is described that Judy has finished

carrying out her duties as a police officer in the parking lot. She

returned to her apartment. In her room Judy was hungry. Judy took

the fast food she had, after heating the food it turned out to be not

worth it to eat and Judy threw it away. Judy's parents called her. At

first, Judy hesitated to pick up the call. She felt embarrassed and

sad because the dream that she has told her parents did not come

true. Judy also picked up the phone from her parents. She said that

she was fine and all his activities were going well. Judy's father

asked if she became a parking attendant because Judy was still

57

wearing the parking attendant vest. Judy said that it was only

temporary. She said it all to convince her parents.

Here it can be seen that Judy hid her emotions so that her

parents did not know. Judy tried to toughen up her life as a cop

who lives in an apartment alone and away from home. Judy held

back her sad emotions and homesickness for her parents. She hid it

all by saying all was well.

c. Hiding emotion when feel failed

Judy Hopps: I'm... not... I'm not a hero.

I came here to make the world
a better place. But... I think I broke it.
Chief Bogo: Don't give yourself so much credit, Hopps. The world
has always been broken, that's why we need good cops. Like you.
Judy Hopps: With all due respect, sir,
a good cop is supposed to serve and protect. Help the city. Not tear
it apart.
I don't deserve this badge.

Zootopia film (13/D/MC:HE/JH/ZF)

This scene captured on 01:16:01-01:16:45. In this picture

described about Judy’s success that has solved a case. Chief Bogo

and the deputy mayor gave Judy an award for being considered a

hero in her city. But Judy refused the award. Judy did not think she

was a real hero. She felt that it was not making the world a better

place, but she felt that she had destroyed her city. Judy felt she did

not deserve the award. She finally decided to let go of her police
58

badge and returned to her hometown. Judy felt sad and guilty for

all the residents. The sadness she described by choosing to give up

her aspirations to become a cop.

In this scene, it can be seen that Judy tried to hold back her sad

emotions and guilt because she felt that she has divided the city and

cannot protect her city. She held back for her leader to understand

her guilt. Hiding emotions like Judy was not easy for a woman to

do. But it could be proven if a woman who has masculinity could

control her emotions and restrain herself.

3) Self Reliance

self-reliance, which is good at solving the problems, the ability to

do or face problems alone and can help friends to solving the

problems.

a. self reliance to help a friend that bullied

Judy Hopps: Hey! You heard her. Cut it out.

Gideon Grey: Nice costume, loser. What crazy world are you living
in where you think a bunny could be a cop?
Judy Hopps: Kindly return my friend's tickets.
Gideon Grey: Come and get them. But watch out. Cause I'm a fox,
and like you said in your dumb little stage play, us predators used
to eat prey. And that killer instinct's still in our denna.
Travis: Uh, I'm pretty much sure it's pronounced DNA.
Gideon Grey: Don't tell me what I know, Travis.
Judy Hopps: You don't scare me, Gideon.

Zootopia film (2/D/MC:SR/JH/ZF)

59

This picture captured on 00:04:25-00:04:55. This scene

showed that Judy tried to help her friends that have been bullied by

Gideon Grey. Judy loudly stopped Gideon who was doing the

bullying. Gideon took some money from Judy's friends who were

weak and did not dare to face Gideon Gray. Judy asked Gideon to

give back all the money he had forcibly taken from his friends.

Gideon, who felt strong because he was a species of wolf,

underestimated Judy and challenged Judy to face it herself. Judy,

who was brave, was not afraid of Gideon, who was physically

stronger. When Judy said “Hey..you hurt her! Cut it out” shows that

she is very brave because she does not want to see her friends get

bullying from Gideon, a fox, and his friend, Travis. In the second

utterance, “You don't scare me, Gideon”, shows Judy’s braveness

although she is scared little bit. In this scene, Judy points out her

deconstructive side. It is rarely happened that a woman who is not

scared with bullying activities.

From this scene, it can be proven that women also have

independence and courage in facing a problem. Judy who has a

small physique, a female rabbit has the courage to face other

animals that were stronger than her. In defending the truth Judy

was not afraid and would do anything to help her friends.

60

b. self reliance when stay away from family

Gazelle: I'm Gazelle. Welcome to Zootopia.

Apartment keeper: And welcome to the crime family house. Luxury
apartments with charm.Complementary delousing once a month.
Don't lose your key!
Judy Hopps: Thank you. Oh, hi! I'm Judy, your new neighbor!
Neighbors: Yeah? Well, we're loud. Don't expect us to apologize
for it.
Judy Hopps: Greasy walls. Rickety bed.Crazy neighbors. I love it!

Zootopia film (6/D/MC:SR/JH/ZF)

This part of scene that captured on 00:12:41-00:13:15. This

scene illustrated that when Judy became a police officer, she should

carry out her dutties in the center of Zootopia city. In there, Judy

lived in an apartment alone. She has very noisy neighbors and that

actually bothers her a lot. However, she did not mind it and liked

her new place instead.

Here it is shown that Judy was a very independent female

rabbit and very positive thinking. The self reliance that she must

live in a big city and must be far from her hometown and his

parents. All must be done alone. This self reliance nature is part of

masculinity. Usually found in men, but many women also have self

reliance in themselves.
61

c. Self reliance in completing duties and responsibilities

Judy Hopps: Stop in the name of the law!

Thief: Catch me if ya' can, cottontail! Coming through!
Officer McHorn: This is officer McHorn. We got a 10-31.
Judy Hopps: I got dibs!
Officer Hopps, I am in pursuit!
Woo-hoo!
Officer McHorn: Hey, meter maid! Wait for the real cops!
Judy Hopps: Stop!

Zootopia film (10/D/MC:SR/JH/ZF)

This picture was captured on 00:28:40-00:29:25. This scene

illustrated about the self reliance of Judy Hopps in completing

duties. Here Judy Hopps who was assigned to the parking police

was on patrol to crack down on motorists whose parking period has

expired. In the midst of her duties, an owner of the shop asked Judy

to help him because his shop had been robbed. Judy who felt it was

her duty too because she was a cop then chased the thief and tried

to arrest him. In the midst of the chase, officer McHorn who was

on patrol stopped and tried to catch up with Judy who was chasing

a thief. Officer McHorn asked Judy to wait for another police

officer. Officer McHorn really looked down on Judy and Judy

Hopps ignored all of that.

You can see in this scene the self reliance and responsibility

of a female rabbit policeman Judy Hopps. She was believe and

confident that she could solve the theft case even though other
62

police officers tried to stop and belittle her. It can be seen that

women who were considered unable to do anything actually have a

strong self reliance character. Not only self reliance but high

responsibility can also be seen in a woman.

d. Self reliance when facing problems and help friend

Judy Hopps: Run. Run!

Nick Wilde: What is wrong with him?
Judy Hopps: I don't know! Jump! Come on! Head down!
Officer Hopps to dispatch!
Benjamin ClawHauser: Are you familiar with Gazelle? Greatest
singer of our lifetime.Angel with horns. Okay, hold on.
Keep watching.Who's that beside her?Who is it?
Wow, you are one hot dancer Benjamin Clawhauser.
It's me! Did you think it was real?
It looks so real! It's not, it's just a new app
Hold on a second
Judy Hopps: Clawhauser!Clawhauser, listen to me.We have a 10-
91!Jaguar gone savage!
Vine and Tujunga!
Nick Wilde: It's Tu-hunga!
Benjamin Clawhauser: Okay, we're sending backup!

Zootopia film (12/D/MC:SR/JH/ZF)

This scene was captured on 00:53:28-00:54:25. In this

scene, Judy Hopps and her friend Nick Wilde came to one of the

predators' house. There, Judy and Nick wanted to find information

about the missing Mr. Otterton. But not until getting this

information, the predator became wild and savage. Judy and Nick

tried to save themselves from the predator. Judy quickly asked

Nick to run with all his strength. They headed for the tropical forest
63

and into the tree trunk. Judy tried to contact her colleague

Clawhauser who was at the police station. Clawhauser who

received information from Judy quickly sent help for Judy.

Judy Hopps: Speed up, Nick. Speed up!

Nick Wilde: There's another train coming!
Judy Hopps: Trust me, speed up.
Doug: Stop the train!
Judy Hopps: Hey. Need some help?
Nick Wilde: Oh, no. Oh, no nono. Too fast! Too fast! Hold on! I
think this is our stop
Judy Hopps: Okay, maybe... Maybe some of the evidence survived.
Everything is gone. We've lost it all.
Nick Wilde: Yeah. All, except for this. Ah, ha hahaha!
Judy Hopps: Ooh, Nick! Yes! Come on! We gotta get to the ZPD.
Zootopia film (15/D/MC:SR/JH/ZF)

This scene was captured on 01:27:07-01:28:20. This

described the effort of Judy and Nick to solved the case. Judy and

Nick came to the basecamp of Doug. In there, Judy and Nick saw

that Doug cultivated a dangerous plant into a drug that would make

predators wild and savage. Judy tried to get a sample of the drug

when Doug was off guard. But Judy did not manage to escape and

she ended up running the train that became Doug's basecamp.

When the train was running, Judy was thrown onto the train tap and

there she saw a train moving from front of her. Judy made a quick

decision and told Nick to speed up the train. Judy's self-reliance

allows her to made decisions quickly and precisely when it's

64

dangerous. This self-reliance trait can also be possessed by a

woman.

It can be seen, Judy's self-reliance was not just

independence in facing a problem alone. In this self-reliance, there

was also a sense of helping friends who were facing problems. Judy

have to make decisions quickly in order to get out of the problem.

Sometimes that self reliance could not work only from oneself. self

reliance in making decisions and with the help of others can also

occur. Self-reliance in making decisions to save oneself and others

was a concept of masculinity that can also be owned by women.

4) Strength

strengthmeans that have a power and being able to dominate and

having the ability to fight back.

a. Strength to fight back and defend

Gideon Grey: Scared now?

Travis: Look at her nose twitch, she is scared.
Gideon Grey: Cry, little baby bunny! Cry...
(Judy Hopps kicked Gideon Grey)
Gideon Grey: Oww… Oh, you don't know when to quit, do you?
(Gideon Grey scratched Judy Hopps’ cheek)
Judy Hopps: Huh!
Gideon Grey: I want you to remember this moment the next time
you think you will ever be... anything more than just a stupid
carrot-farming dumb bunny.

Zootopia film (3/D/MC:S/JH/ZF)

65

This picture was captured on 00:04:55-00:05:25. In this

scene we can see how Judy Hopps want to help her friends that

have been bullied by Gideon Grey. With her small body, Judy

Hopps dared to challenge and fight Gideon Gray, who had a bigger

and stronger body because Gideon was a predatory species. Judy

said she was not afraid of Gideon. But Gideon, who was even

stronger, pushed Judy's body down to the ground and taunted her.

Judy, who was brave, used her strength to fight Gideon by kicking

him in the face. Gideon Gray, who didn't accept it, then scratched

Judy's cheek until it was torn.

Here it can be proven that even the smallest body will not

affect the strength and courage that we have. If you were brave

then your strength would be used well. That power was one of the

masculine traits. And having the power to fight back was rarely

possessed by a woman. And it could be seen if a woman who was

considered weak has the opportunity and strength to striked back

and protected herself and others.

b. Strength to prove ability

said by people around her. But, she does not give up and does not
care enough about their sentences. She keeps practicing every day
until she is success.
Judy Hopps Defeated another animal in police training.
Zootopia film (5/D/MC:S/JH/ZF)
66

This scene was captured on 00:07:05-00:07:15. In this scene

we can see that Judy Hopps does not give up to be a policewoman.

Although she get oppressions from her senior, she keeps thinking

positive. She practices all the time, until she can bear down another

bigger animals in Zootopia Police Academy and becomes the best

graduate in academy.

The oppression that falls on Judy Hopps in academy shows

the feminism side of Judy Hopps. But, after she gets it, she

becomes stronger and can bear down anotther bigger animals. This

is the deconstructive side of Judy Hopps. It is rare when a woman

can bear down another bigger man around her. It breaks the people

thinking about the woman, it is about not all woman is weak, it

depends on herself to change herself with their own way.

c. Strength to fight back in solving the case

Nick Wilde: Hey. Wait, where you going? Where are you going?
Get back here!
What are you doing? He's gonna see you! What are you looking at?
Hey! Whatever you're thinking, stop thinking it.Carrots.Carrots.
Doug: You better have the
extra foam this time.
Hey!

Nick Wilde: Wait, what?

Zootopia film (14/D/MC:S/JH/ZF)

This scene was captured on 01:25:12-01:25:40. This scene

illustrated that Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde want to took the

dangerous drugs that have been made by Doug. That dangerous

drugs would be given to ZPD (Zootopia Police Department). Nick

was surprised by what Judy suddenly did. Nick tried to restrain

Judy because Nick was afraid that Doug would see Judy. Judy ran

and kicked Doug who was talking to his partner until he fell out of

his basecamp train. With her strength Judy fought Doug who was

clearly stronger and bigger than Judy Hopps

In this scene, it could be seen that Judy Hopps, who was a

small female rabbit who was underestimated and weak, could fight

back against a more physically large animal. In the general view,

women did not have more power against men. But it could be

proven if in herself women could have a strength that is even

stronger than that of men.

B. Discussion

Based on the analysis above, the researcher found one depiction that

used on the main character Judy Hopps in the Zootopia film and there

were 4 concepts of masculinity, namely confidence, hiding emotions, self

reliance, and strength. With the depiction of character 2 data, the concept
68

of masculinity were confidence 4 data, hiding emotion 3 data, self reliance

5 data, and finally the strength 3 data. With some data as evidence was

collected, it could be denied that the first depiction of the main character

Judy Hopps in the Zootopia film was a flat character and the second there

were 4 concepts of masculinity that are identical to men but were evident

in Judy Hopps who was a female rabbit. The four concepts of masculinity

had a positive effect on Judy Hopps' thoughts and actions.

First, in the depiction of the main character Judy Hopps in the film

Zootopia, it was found that the character Judy Hopps was a flat character.

because there were no changes that could surprise the audience. In the

beginning she believed that she would change the world to a better place

by becoming a police officer. In the middle and in the end of the film she

was still solid with her desire to make the world a better place. The flat

character here was how the main character stays on the existing storyline

without changing the character's attitude.

Next, for the masculinity concepts that have found, The four

concepts were analyzed using the deconstructive approach proposed by

Derrida. The first was the concept of masculinity in form of confidence.

There were some confidence that the main character Judy Hopps has in the

Zootopia film. First was confidence in her dream. In this case Judy has the

strong confidence to prove that her dream to become the first female rabbit

police officer could come true. The second was confidence in your own

strength, Judy has high confidence in her ability, she can prove that she

can do her job even more than the target that has been given. The third was
69

confidence in carrying out duties, as previously Judy Hopps' confidence in

her abilities was very high even in problem solving. Judy dared to take a

big case and believed that she could solve it on time.

The second form of the concept of masculinity was hiding emotion.

First Judy could hide her emotion when she was underestimated. She

continued to prove that she deserved to be recognized as a police officer.

the second was hiding emotion when she has to live far from family. Judy

held back her longing and sadness when she had to be away from her

parents. Judy tried to make sure that she was okay despite the sadness that

she was hiding. The last one was hiding emotion when she felt

disappointed and guilty. Judy hid her disappointment and guilt when she

felt she has destroyed the city. She felt like a failure in her dream of

making the city a better place. She chose to release her police bedge.

The third concept of masculinity found in Judy was Self reliance.

Some of the characteristics of self-reliance could be seen in the main

character Judy Hopps. The first was self reliance to help friends that have

been bullied. Judy with her self reliance dared to face Gideon Gray who

was stronger than her to help her friend who was being bullied by Gideon.

The second was self reliance when stay away from family. The self

reliance seen when Judy Hopps was assigned to the city center and has to

live in an apartment alone away from her family. The third was self

reliance when facing a problem and help friends. Judy Hopps' self reliance

made her became a person who can make decisions quickly and correctly
70

when faced a problem. Not only to face a problem, but also to help her

friend.

The final point of the concept of masculinity was strength. First Judy

Hopps has the strength to fight back and defend. Judy tried to help her

friend by braving the bigger Gideon Gray. Judy used her physical strength

to attack Gideon by kicking him. The second was strength to prove ability.

Often underestimated even by trainers in police training, Judy did not

stand still and was constantly trying to prove her strength. All proved by

Judy who managed to beat the other members who were bigger with her

own strength. The last one was strength to fight back in solving problems.

Judy's strength comes out when she has to be faced with a problem. She

took the decision to fight rather the cases she was handling solved.

From the four concepts of masculinity above, by using the

deconstruction approach by Derrida, it could be proven if women can also

have confidence, hiding emotion, self reliance, and strength. Masculinity

that was only seen as owned by men did not fully exist and must exist in

men. Women who were dominated have a feminine side, on the other

hand, they must also have a masculinity that makes them more able to

think and act logically and positively.

Based on research findings, it can be found that this research analyze

the depiction of main character and masculinity concept that have been

found in the female character. And from four previous studies researcher

have found that usedZootopia film, Masculinity concept, and

71

derrida'stheory of deconstruction. But none of the previous researchers in

the previous study conducted research on masculinity in female characters

in a film.
CHAPTER IV

CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTION

In this chapter, the researcher would like to present the conclusion

from the data that have been analyzed in discussion in the previous chapter.

That told about the depiction of the main character Judy Hopps and kinds of

masculinity concepts that have found in Judy Hopps in Zootopia film

directed by Byron Howard and Rich Moore. The researcher also provide

suggestion to readers and other researcher who interested in this research.

A. Conclusion

Researcher analyzed the main character Judy Hopps in Zootopia

film used the depiction of character theory by Boggs and Pertie and also

analyzed the masculinity concepts proposed by Levant used the

deconstruction approach by Derrida. For the first indicator was depiction

of main Character Judy Hopps in Zootopia film, the depiction of this

main character was a flat character. It mean that the main Character Judy

Hopps in Zootopia film was not change in the story of film. Second

indicator were 4 concepts of masculinity that used deconstruction

approach.

From the analysis above, the reseacher concluded that the main

character Judy Hopps in Zootopia film was a flat character. Researcher

also concluded by using the deconstruction approach by Derrida, some

of scenes in Zootopia Movie have deconstructive side which were acted

by Judy Hopps, the main character of the movie. It could be proven if

women can also have confidence, hiding emotion, self reliance, and

72
73

strength. Masculinity that was only seen as owned by men did not fully

exist and must exist in men. Women who were dominated have a

feminine side, on the other hand, they must also have a masculinity that

makes them more able to think and act logically and positively.

B. Suggestion

Researcher would provide suggestion to readers and also to other

researchers.

1. For the readers, researcher suggest when we analyze the literary

work in this case is film, we should know how the character was

depicted in the film. So, we can find out how the characters in the

film carry out the story line well.

2. For teachers, researcher suggest that from this research teachers can

develop their way to teach using a film and some approach to

analyze the film.

3. For students, researcher suggest that from this research students

should express their opinions more in appreciating literary works,

especially films.

4. For the other researcher, researcher suggest that this research can be

use as reference. By using deconstructive approach or use Zootopia

film. another researchers can also use another approach or theory

that appropriate in analyzing Zootopia film, and they can focus on

the some aspects in the film that the researcher did not analyze yet to

get boarder comprehension of the film.
