"Diving Into The

Wreck"
by Adrienne Rich
Introduction
"Diving Into The Wreck" is a poem by
Adrienne Rich. Rich published this poem in
1973. The poem's central theme expresses
going on a journey to explore and have an
understanding of one self-identity. Rich
implements many metaphors throughout
the poem to tell her journey.

The Wreck
Rich expresses that she is going to dive
and explore the wreck that has
occurred. Rich writes in the poem, "I
came to explore the wreck" (line 52).
Rich wants to authentically, and first-
hand see any trace of ancestry or past
that may connect something about her.
Not just be comfortable with what is
said to or about her identity by others.

The Words
"The Words are purpose. The Words are
maps" (Rich, lines 53-54). Words found
can be used as a tool to articulate,
comprehend, and investigate. These
lines express that words have the
capacity to set Rich's path to shape and
be able to define her identity and fit in
the world.

Destroyed Instrument
Rich writes in line 83, "We are the half-
destroyed instruments." This metaphor
expresses that the approach to
understanding one's identity will not
always be concluded. There will be voids
and uncertainty in discovering our
identity as a whole. Additionally, it
highlights the boundary of the words as
she struggles to seize her knowledge
completely.

Book of Myths
The book of myths initially influenced
Rich to dive into the wreck. She wanted to
encounter and reclaim the myths in such
said book. "A book of myths" (Rich, line
92). As she seeks to understand herself,
she is also challenging and rewriting the
predominant myths that have
characterized her.
