Chapter 6

Assessment # 1

1. Describe the important elements of literature.

It have three important elements of literature and these are the emotional appeal,
intellectual appeal and humanistic value. The emotional appeal talks about the
emotional feedback of the reader towards the literary work of a writer, if he is
emotionally moved or touched by the literary piece. The second important element is
the intellectual appeal which pertains to the knowledge or information and reminds the
readers of what he has forgotten and the last one is the humanistic value which can be
attained when the literary works changed the perspective in life and turned him into a
better one.

2. Why is a short story, classified as interpretative rather than escape literature?

Short story is classified as one of the interpretative literature because aside it's only
focuses in one character, it also show the real life experiences of the character in the
story.

3. Distinguish between formal and informal essay.

The formal essay is a piece of writing that informs or persuade its audience like writing a
narrative essays. They same with formal essay, informal essay informs and persuade
the audience but it was written with less formal expression like speaking to the reader in
a conversational style.

4. Compare drama and poetry.

Drama and poetry are both a product of literature. Drama, it is a mode of fictional
representation through dialogue and performance while poetry is comprised of a
particular rhythmic and metrical pattern. These two brought enjoyment to the world.

5. Read a favorite poem. Try to understand the value of the poem. Write a short
essay about it.

Dr. Jose Rizal is known for being our national hero. The person who opened the eyes of
our Filipino ancestors and become the sources of strength and courage to fight back
and to be free from Spanish tyranny. Aside of that Rizal heroism, he is known for his
amazing talent in literature and one of his literary piece I adore is his poem entitled "My
First Inspiration". This poem shows his eternal love and appreciation for his mother,
Dona Teodora. It's like his way of paying tribute to all the efforts of her dear mother. And
as a mother, having this kind of son is the best gift that our Almighty Father given to. I'm
be proud to myself that I raised my child with full of love and care. Rizal's poem cheered
me and for me, it's the best poem I ever read.

The Drama

1. Outline the development of Drama.

Development of Drama

I. Ancient Drama

a. In the 5th century B.C. , theatrical performance were organized almost exclusively in
Athens.

b. It's part of the celebrations in honour of god Dionysus.

c. The most important celebration, the Great or City Dionysia, included competitions of
tragedy, satirical drama and comedy.

II. Medieval Drama

a. Began as mimetic representations of religious history.

b. Which clerics and subsequently laymen enacted the events of Holy Scripture, God's
dealings with His people in the Old and New Testaments.

III. Renaissance Drama

a. Renaissance drama is sometimes called Elizabethan drama, since its most important
development started when Elizabeth was the Queen of England from 1558 to 1603.

b. The drama continued after Queen Elizabeth's death, into the reigns of King James I
(1603 - 1625) and his son King Charles (1625 - 1649).

c. Shakespeare, started writing plays in the later years of Queen Elizabeth's reign, but
continued into the reign of James.

d. In writing plays from James's reign, scholars and critics sometimes use the term
Jacobean drama and plays from Charles I's reign are called Caroline drama. But for the
subject as a whole, terms like English Renaissance drama or theatre are more
accurate.

IV. Modern Drama

a. Credit should be given to Ibsen, a Norwegian dramatist, for the development of the
modern drama.

b. Ibsen's influence on modern drama was immense. The production of his work
throughout Europe stimulated a great burst of dramatic activity everywhere.
2. Why is Cinema or Motion picture the most popular form of art and
entertainment in the Philippines?

The Cinema or Motion Picture is one of the most popular forms of art and entertainment
in our country. It's a source of information as well as of entertainment. Cinema or motion
picture introduce us to new ideas and help us explore serious social issues. Students,
industries and our government uses it to inform and influence the Filipino and people
from other countries. And also, it's an art form that has been called "a wild combination
of art, culture, commerce and technology."

3. What are the elements of Philippine motion picture? Elaborate each.

There are six elements of Philippine motion picture and these are:

1. Musical and Musical Director

During the era of silent movies, every cinema house employed musicians who played
music that suited the tempo and varying moods of the scenes as they were projected on
the screen while others used phonography records for economy. The musician required
to see the pictures and make musical arrangements that suited the tempo and moods
on different scenes. On the other hand, the musical director, in charge of the music,
composed new songs and wrote their orchestration, repaired background music,
created music scores, and supervised all recording and re-recording.

2. Make-up , Coiffeur and Costumes

Make-up consists of the sticky substances, which are applied on the face of the actors
before facing the camera. The hair of the actress should suit the part she place in the
picture. Aside from that, before the actors were required to furnish their own attire.
However, if they did not have particular attire or suit which the script required, the
producer supplied them at his own expense.

3. Acting and the Stars

Acting is the art of portraying or impersonating a character. A performer should forget

his own personality and live the life of the character his portraying. The costumes, hair,
make-up, body movement, mannerisms and the way of speaking , expression of the
eyes and other parts of the face, the gesture of the hand are the factors that help the
performers in perfecting the role he is portraying.

4. Color in the Movies

Color is the latest innovation in cinematography and in local movies was attempted in
1941 by N Pictures Inc. in Ibong Adarna. LVN Pictures Inc. is the first to introduce color
in local movies. Today, LVN color film laboratory is considered the best in the Far East.
Color films and their processing cost twice as much the black and white film. At the
present, all the local pictures are already in color.

5. Set and Art Director

Beautiful setting gives beauty to the pictures and pleases the eye. The Art directors
should know the natural setting and build artificial sets. They should get the inspiration
from liberal producers and disappoint the stingy ones.
6. Sounds, Cameras and Technicians

Technicians exert efforts in making the dialogue clear and music of fine quality.
Recording is the process where an orchestra playing the music or song is being
recorded in the sound track by the recording apparatus and playback is the method
when an actress or actor borrows the voice of another. The camera man is responsible
for exact framing and also decides the use of masking, the choice of lens, the camera
angle and the control of camera movements.

4. Define Drama.

Drama is a mode of fictional representation through dialogue and performance. It is one

of the literary genres, which is an imitation of some actions. In simple words, a drama is
a composition in verse or prose presenting a story in pantomime or dialogue.

5. Compare Moriones to Ati-atian.

The Moriones Festival is a folk-religious event held annually during Holy Week on the
island of Marinduque, considered the geographical heart of the Philippines. Morion
Festival began in 1807 when Padre Dionsio Santiago, a Mogpog parish priest,
organized a play based on the story of Longinus ( or Longino ), one of the Roman
centurion assigned to Execute Christ. This festival celebrates the life of Linginus, the
Roman soldier who pierced Christ's side during the crucifixion. Blood from the wound
spattered Longinus blind eye which was immediately healed. Converted on the spot, he
later attested to the Resurrection and, refusing to recant, was executed. In addition, the
Moriones Festival costumes, the word "morion" refers to the visor of the helmet that is
associated with the armor of the Roman soldier. On the other hand, Ati-Atihan Festival
is a feast held annually in honor of the Santo Niῆo (Infant Jesus), held on the third
sunday of January in the town of Kalibo, Aklan, Philippines, on the island of Panay. It
originally came from Batan, Aklan, then adopted later by some neighboring towns.
Aside from that, Ati-Atihan is a unique blend of pagan and religious elements celebrated
through rhythmic drum beats, chants, prayers, tribal dance and Ati costumes. This Ati-
Atihan is quite different from other festivities honouring the Sto.

The Medium of Music

1. What are the mediums of music?

There are two mediums of music and these are the vocal medium and instrumental
medium. The example of vocal medium is the human voice and it called as the most
popular of all instruments. On the other hand, instrumental medium is pertaining to the
musical instrument where it is always the source of wonder to both player and listener.

2. What is musical instrument?

Musical instrument is a device created or adapted to make musical sounds. In principle,

any object that produces sound can be considered a musical instrument - it is through
purpose that the object becomes a musical instrument.

3. What are the properties of music sound?

There are four properties of music sound and these are the:

1. Timbre

Timbre also called tone color or tone quality. It is the distinctive quality of a tone.

2. Pitch

It refers to the highness and lowness of tone. The vibrations and sound - producing
material determine the pitch of a tone: the slower the vibration, the slower the pitch; the
shorter the vibrating material, the higher the pitch it produces.

3. Durations

Duration is the length of sound in time. The varying length of sounds in time creates
rhythm, and these variations are what make compositions interesting. In music, time is
indicated by symbols we call notes.

4. Intensity

It refers to the loudness and softness of a sound produced by the varying degree of
pressure applied to the instrument producing the sound. It evokes the emotional
features in music mores from loud to soft and vice versa.

4. What is the most natural instrument?

The most natural instrument is the human voice. It's the first and most natural musical
instrument and also the most emotional.
5. What are the types of musical instruments?

The types of musical instruments are first is the string which includes the violins,
violas, violoncello (cello), and double bass (string bass). They produces sound because
a string stretched across these instrument's bodies vibrate. Vibrations are produced by
horse hair stretched in a violin's bow rubbing over these strings or by fingers plucking
them. The strings section is the nucleus of an orchestra. The second one is the
Woodwind. Woodwind produce sound with musicians blowing air through them directly
across a hole or through a seed or reeds at the mouthpiece. Instruments in this section
are made of the tubes with holes which are closed or opened by the fingers or a set of
keys to vary the pitch of tones, Examples are the clarinets, oboes, English horns,
Barson and Contrabassons. Next is Brass, an instruments cylindrical tubes with bell-
shaped ends molded blow in a special way into conical mouthpieces to produces tones.
Examples are trumpets, trombones, French horns and the tubas. They provide style to
climactic moments of an orchestral piece. The fourth one, Percussion. This instruments
are played by striking, scraping, shaking or scratching them using hands, sticks or other
hard objects. Examples are timpani or kettle drums, xylophones, glokenspiel (or lyre)
and vibraphone and family of drums (snare, bass, tomtoni, etc), cymbals, chimes,
triangles and gongs. They provide rhythmic accents of the percussion sections and the
last one is the keyboard instruments like piano and organ.

The Elements and Organization of Music

1. Choose a popular song and make an essay about your interpretation of the
lyrics, message and symbolic of that song.

The song entitled "If We Hold On Together" which is sung by Diana Ross is my most
favorite song in my life. As I understand about this song, it's a song that giving unending
strength to all people who's having a hard time in reaching their dreams in life. In
addition, it also tells that you must live in your life, live who you are. Have faith, hope
and glory. And when you hold or believe yourself then you will succeed in your life.

2. Research about the Bohemian Rhapsody and make a detailed discussion about
its background and history.

Bohemian Rhapsody is a song by the British rock band Queen and it was written by
Freddie Mercury for the band's 1975 album A Night at the Opera. It is a six-minutes
suites, consisting of several sections without a chorus: an intro, a ballad segment, an
operatic passage, a hard rock part and reflective coda. The song is a more accessible
take on the 1970s progressive rock genre. There is a story behind the song Bohemian
Rhapsody. According to Quora, the song entitled "Bohemian Rhapsody" because it
depicts the life of a 'bohemian', whose original meaning is 'artist' while 'Rhapsody' is a
fantasy (literally, it could play in his head) or a vision; within this song Freddie Mercury
foresees his life in a symbolic way. The biggest themes portrayed in the film is the
loneliness of stardom. One scene shows Mercury getting out of bed and walking
through his mansion, accompanied by six of his beloved cat. In addition, Bohemian
Rhapsody is special. An important reason that "Bohemian Rhapsody" resonates and
has resonated for over 40 years is that it embodied something very intense, which is
Freddie Mercury's personality and life. That record is an oral extension of Freddie
Mercury's self-consciousness without shame.
3. Using the tune of any popular song, compose your very own song (at least 1

Dance

Assessment #5

1. Can there be dance without music? Why? Why not? Elaborate.

Dance and music are separate forms but shared elements like rhythm, time,
impulse, etc. They can both exist alone but the craft of each contributes to the
experience of the other. Through dancing, it improved our cardiovascular fitness,
strengthening our muscles, increasing circulation, decreasing blood pressure, lowering
the risk of coronary heart disease, reducing stress and many other positive benefits.
Aside from that in dancing, it makes us feel good and brings happiness into our body
and soul. But the question is, can be there be dance without music?

Can there be a dance without music? My answer is yes. Of course we can dance
without playing a music. Have you notice that choreographer can create great
movements without playing a music? Our body is an instrument and every time we
moves our body is an art form of dance. Yes, music set energy and inspire people to
dance but that doesn't mean we can't dance without it.

Therefore, we human are great dancer and our movements is powerful that in
way we can expresses our emotion by moving our body. We don't need to play music to
set up the mood, all we need to do is to free ourselves. To free what we feel and dance
whole heartedly.
