Oral Text Analysis Guidelines


Once you have selected the article you will evaluate, you should read, annotate and highlight
examples in this source that will allow you to support your analysis.

A. Begin your presentation with an introductory statement that introduces the title,
authors, date of publication, and source and summarizes the main aim of the study.

B. In your presentation, you should focus on the following:

 Elements of the introduction (background information, significance of the topic,


literature review, gaps in the literature, purpose of the study and research
question/hypothesis)
1. Briefly summarize the background information provided and significance
of the topic.
2. Focus on the literature review (select a section from the literature review
and highlight its main idea along with metadiscourse, signal phrases and
transition words used to highlight relationships among sources).
3. Identify gaps in the literature that led to the purpose of the current study.
 Elements of the discussion section (summary of the findings, explanation of the
findings, implications of the study, and limitations)
1. Summarize and explain the findings.
2. Identify the implications.
3. Identify the limitations of the current study.

C. End your presentation by explaining how the findings of the study will help you in
developing the main ideas in your Literature Review.

1. Briefly summarize the ideas you will be extracting from this 5th source to
supplement those already present in your synthesis paragraphs.
2. Explain/justify how this information works with your existing 4 sources and
synthesis paragraphs. Clearly link each new idea to that of an existing source.
