Guilherme- Hello! Today we are gathered here to discuss the Amazon forest destruction.

Here with us are Lily Michelle the minister of the environment, Britney Williams, a factory
owner, Sarah Conner, an environmentalist and Tracy Charlotte, a citizen. First, I would like to
hear from the minister of the environment.

Andreia- Good afternoon! Lately, we have been hearing a lot about the consequences of
deforestation of the Amazon forests, but there are also good things about this, such as
economical improvements, not just for Brazil, which has the biggest part of the forest, but
also for the rest of the world.

Iara- May I ? Thinking about economical improvement, as the owner of a meat factory, I
think that the destruction of the Amazon forest is extremely required for business, because
the highest deforestation and more fire points are located near the cities with the highest
concentration of cattle.

Rafaela- These fires happened near my tribe and ended up destroying animal habitats and
people's houses. There is a release of gasses that can be harmful to our health.

Guilherme- Speaking of pollution gasses, today we have an environmentalist here with us

Sarah Corner. Sarah, what is your opinion on the subject?

Sofia- Like Tracy Charlotte, who is an indigenous, said, those gasses are harmful to human’s
health, but are also a serious problem to our planet, because once in the atmosphere, CO2
and CO act like a blanket or a cap, trapping some of the heat that Earth was suppose to
radiate out into space, increasing the temperature, due to greenhouse effect.
And just for you to know, the Amazon rainforest absorbs billions of tons of CO2 (carbon
dioxide) and by cutting or burning them, the gas is released.

Guilherme- Thank you for your contribution. Britney Williams, your factory also emits
greenhouse gasses. Am I right?

Iara- My factory is very sustainable, we have technics to reduce the greenhouse gasses
emissions such as:
● We feed our animals with grain because it is more environmentally sustainable than
feeding them with grass.
● We use an additive to reduce methane emissions in rumination, the product showed
a drop of 90% in beef cattle.

Rafaela- It may be true Britney Williams , but you don't know how hard it is to live in these
conditions and all because of money. That's why you don't know how bad it is to live like this
and see my house being destroyed by all of you.

Guilherme- Now that Britney Williams has finished. What about the biodiversity of the
Amazon, is it related to the deforestation of this forest?

Sofia- Biodiversity in the amazon forest is unique and rare. It is estimated that the Amazon
rainforest hosts 10% of the known fauna, in addition to a large number of still unknown
species hidden between its exuberant nature, and 20% of the flora composed of more than
10,000 plants that contain ingredients for medical or cosmetic use.

Andreia- Yes, and like you said, we need these plants, to use for our healthy products and
cosmetic products. The Amazon is one of the most diverse regions in the world, so, we have
a lot of opportunities to explore this area, and to Improve our pharmaceutical and food
methods, seeking new medicines and unique fruits, vegetables and fish, all in one habitat,
what would be good for the economy? Animals grow, and plants are born again, but unique
opportunities like this, do not exist. We should use what mother nature gave us.

Sofia- And you agree with the fact that the destruction of their habitat puts them on the verge
of extinction? driving the loss of biodiversity? This isn’t fair for the poor animals.

Andreia- If we use more than 40% of fauna and more than 30% of the animals to bring forth

🙄
more advantage to the economy, and the other part is still reproducing herself, this can be
more well-balanced. The industry still making money, besides the “poor” animals also can
live.

Iara- I would be inclined to agree.

Rafaela- How can we grow as a society if we have ministers like this? (walks out)

Guilherme- The time is up and with one of the members is out of the table, our discussion is
over. This has been a very interesting discussion. Thank you all for participating.
