言います （いいます）means ‘to say’. We can also use it to say what something is called (i.e.

how to ‘say’
something).
Eg. 私 の 先生 は リーシュマン と 言います。
My teacher is called Leishman.
If we drop it back to the plain form and use it with と we can turn it into the subject of the sentence and
add more information about it. Read this sentence a few times until you feel comfortable with the layout.
Eg. リースマン と 言う 先生 は ちょっと へん です。
(The) teacher called Leishman, is a bit strange.
Write these sentences in English – make sure you deal with the subject (everything in front of the は) first,
before you start to work out the rest of the information.
1. ともき と 言う ともだち は やきゅう が 上手 です。

2. バニラ と 言う あじ は ぼく の 一ばん すき です。（あじ= flavour）

3. オークランド と 言う とし は とても にぎやか な とし です。

4. 「エド シーラン」と 言う かしゅ は さいきん オークランド に いました。

5. びわ と 言う みずうみ は 日本 の 一番 大きい です。

The sentences can be in any order – keep looking for the subject / topic of the sentence.

6. やすみに かんこく に 行って キンチ と いう たべもの を たべて みました。

7. しゅうまつ に「アバター」と いう えいが を 見ました。

8. あなた の 学校 で 「エンタージ」 と 言う 校ちょう先生 が いますか。

9. 母は たん生日 に 「プリアス」と言う くるま を かって くれました。

10. 「ピカチュ」と 言う アニメ を しって いますか。
