Materials:
The Mouse and the Motorcycle
“What were you thinking?!” by Bryan Smith (or any other picture book with a setting and characters)
The Different Bird/The Astronauts Diary worksheets
Summarize Using Setting and Characters Worksheet

Find characters and setting and use them to make a good summary

Main Procedures/Strategies:
Tell students that just like they need to know about characters and setting to write a good story, when they
read, they need to know about the characters and setting, too. Read the picture book, and discuss noticing
the characters and setting as you read. Then, as a class, use the characters and setting to write a good
summary of the book.

Adaptations/Differentiation:

Closing of lesson:
Allow students to practice what they learned by summarizing the book they are currently reading using
characters and a setting to describe what happened.
