disaster is defined as an incident which occur in a sudden manner, complex in its nature and
causes loses of lives ., damages to property or natural environment and bring a deep effect
to local activities Such incident requires an extensive resources , equipment , skills and man
power from many agencies with an affective coordination , which is possibly demanding a
complex action
ii. Define mass casualty incident
An incident that generates a sufficiently large number of casualties whereby the available
healthcare resources, or their management systems, are severely challenged or unable to
meet the healthcare needs of the affected population.

Natural disaster – harmful event that happened natural eg. Earthquake,hurricane

Human made disaster – caused by human eg.chemical threat,war

Hydbrid disaster – a disaster cause by both natural and man made – eg. Flash flood

1. prevention
- implementing evacuation plan
- planning and designing a city in way that minimize the risk
2. mitigation
- aim to minimize loss of human life
- both structural and nonstructural measures maybe taken
3. Preparedness
- Do a training to ensure highest level of readiness
- Do a fire drills and evacuation rehearsal.
4. Response
- Disaster management leader will coordinate the use of resources to help restore
personal and environmental safety and minimize the risk of any additional damage
5. Recovery
- Can take long time to restore all essential community functions.
- Ultimately this stage is about helping individual, communities, businesses and
organization return to normal or new normal depending on the impact.
