Physics 30 Unit 3 Assignment

1. a) Solve the following circuit, including the power loss across each resistor and the emf
source. Show all work and fill in the corresponding chart on the answer sheet.

b) If Resistor 1 was made of copper and is at 22 °C, find the change in resistance if it was heated
to 34 °C, and then find its resistance at 34 °C.
2. Suppose a moving rod in the below diagram is 0.10 m long, the velocity v is 2.5 m/s, the
total resistance of the loop that it is attached to is 0.030 W, and B is 0.60 T. Find the
induced emf and the induced current on the rod.

3. Lenz’s Law:
a. Determine the Magnetic poles of b. Determine the direction of the
the solenoid at points 1 and 2. Current (electron flow) at the front
of the solenoid.
(Left or Right)

4. An ideal transformer has a primary voltage of 500 V and a primary current of 17.0 A. If
the current coming out of the secondary side is 30.0 A, find the secondary voltage. Is
this a step-up or step-down transformer?
5. Michelson’s Experiment:
a. A rotating mirror with 8 sides rotates at 545 Hz in an experiment similar to that
of Michelson. How far away should the fixed mirror be placed to correctly
measure the speed of light?

b. If the frequency of rotation of a 8 sided mirror is 1.00 x 103 Hz and the distance
between it and a fixed concave mirror is 17.5 km, calculate the speed of light.

6. Mirrors:
a. Using ray diagrams, determine the characteristics of the image for the arrow
below.
Magnification: Same Size / Enlarged / Diminished

Attitude: Upright / Inverted

Type: Real / Virtual

b. A 1.5 cm tall object is placed 12 cm away from a converging mirror. The image is
magnified to four times its original height and is inverted. Showing your
calculations, determine the mirror’s focal length.
7. Lenses:
a. Using ray diagrams, determine the characteristics of the image for the arrow
below.

Magnification: Same Size / Enlarged / Diminished

Attitude: Upright / Inverted

Type: Real / Virtual

b. A lens with a focal length of 4.0 cm is placed 10 cm away from a 8.5 cm tall
object. How far from the lens is the image? Also, how tall is the image?

8. In the figure below, material a is water and material b is a glass with an index of
refraction 1.52. If the incident ray makes an angle of 60° with the normal, find the
directions of the reflected and refracted rays. Also, find the critical angle for this water-
glass boundary if the ray direction was reversed (going from the glass into the water).
