GAS S UPPLY GAS REGULATING UNIT GAS ENGINE

© Wärtsilä
Function

• The gas pressure must always remain higher than the charge
air pressure
• The safety system will stop the engine if the difference
between the gas pressure and the charge air pressure
becomes to small or too large
• The shut-off valves on the gas regulating unit are closed
during a normal stop sequence
• An emergency stop sequence will close the shut-off valves

© Wärtsilä
Function

• Reduces the inlet pressure

• Distributes the gas to the main system and to the pre-
combustion system
• Pressure regulator operated by a control air system
• The pressure is controlled by a 4-20 mA IP-converter
• The gas pressure will vary depending on the engine load
• Opening, closing and venting is electrically controlled

© Wärtsilä
Function
Single and double line unit are available.
Single line with only one controlled gas
pressure to the engine and double line for
engines with separately controlled
prechamber pressure.
Single line: 12V34SG, 18V34SG, 18V32DF,
18V50DF
Double line: 9L34SG, 16V34SG, 20V34SG

The GRU can also be equipped with a

turbine flow meter, for engine specific flow
metering.

The standard gas regulating unit is for

pressures up to 6 bar(g). If the line gas
pressure is higher the GRU can be equipped
with a safety shut-off valve. The maximum
gas pressure is than 16 bar.

Pressure Regulator

• Pressure regulator is operated using control air

• Regulated by electro-pneumatic regulator valves with a 4-20 mA
input signal
• Pressure regulator designed to keep the outlet pressure of the
natural gas at different pressures -without pulsation.
• The regulator consists of the main valve body and the functional
units “regulator”, “pilot valve” and “safety shut-off valve” (SAV)

Safety shut-off valve (SAV)

• SSV is required when inlet pressure is over 6 bar(g)

• Max pressure is 16 bar(g)

• Automatically closes the regulator when the downstream pressure

has increased over the limit
• Positioned beneath the regulator

• Can only be manually reset

• Resetting shall be done carefully and by using the re-engagement
differential pressure

Activation of the gas regulating unit

Before start the following things should be checked:

1. Make a visual check of the entire unit
– Check that no work is performed on the unit, and that all flanges are
bolted together and that all connections are installed and secured

2. Dispose any unsecured items or debris near the unit that may inhibit
operation or could cause injury

3. Ensure that the engine room is well ventilated and free of gas

4. Check that the main gas valve on the gas regulating unit is closed

Activation of the gas regulating unit

5. Check that the gas inlet pressure is normal

6. Check that the control air pressure is sufficient to operate the system

7. Check that the manual vent valve on the gas train is closed

8. Open up all manual shut-off valves to instrument and control units

9. Check that the safety shut-off function on the pressure regulator is

reset

10. Check that the electrical control system is active and power
available

© Wärtsilä
Activation of the gas regulating unit

11. Open the gas main shut-off valve outside the building

12. Open the main gas valve on the gas regulating unit

13. Check that the gas regulating unit is functioning properly

14. Check that the shut-off valves are gastight

15. Check that the engine is ready for start

Caution! If the gas regulating unit has been opened for maintenance
or repair, it should be ventilated properly!

Monitoring the gas regulating unit

• Daily checks during normal operation and supervision

• Check the temperature and pressure in the system
• Check the pressure drop over the filtration unit
• Check for leakage

Caution!
If gas is found to leak into the engine room, it is essential that the
engine and the gas supply system are shut down immediately.
Leave the engine room and do not enter until the room has been
properly ventilated to remove any trace of gas.

Monitoring the gas regulating unit

Following start blockings, alarms and shutdowns are caused by

the gas regulating unit:

• Main gas pressure difference

• Prechamber gas pressure difference
• Low and high gas pressure
• Low and high gas temperature
• Safety valve tripped

Shutting down

1. Close the main gas inlet valve (1) on the gas train
2. Close the main shut-off valve outside the building.
3. Open the manual ventilation valve (2) if the gas regulating unit shall
be shut down for any prolonged time.

Caution!
If maintenance shall be performed on any part of the system, this
may require closing and locking the main inlet gas valve (1)
