    According to ASME Sec.VIII., Div.1, App.8 (2004), liquid penetrant testing has acceptance criteria for discontinuities. Linear indications like cracks, laps, or folds of any length are unacceptable. Round indications greater than 5mm are also unacceptable. Four or more round indications in a line, with an edge to edge separation of 1.5mm or less, fail the criteria as well.

    Discontinuity

    Linear
    Round
    (Crack,LOP,LOF)

    Unacceptable regardless Four or more round indications in a line


    of length Round indications > 5mm separated by 1.5 mm or less
    (edge to edge)

    * Relevant Indications: Indications with major dimensions greater than 1.5mm.


    * Linear Indication: Is one having a length greater than three times the width.
    *Round Indication: Is one of circular or elliptical shape with the length equal to or less than three times the width.
