Election
Perhaps one of the most awaited events in the Philippines is their national
elections where their next leader is chosen to represent their country. National and local
elections are held on the second Monday of May every third year starting 1992. While the
presidential and vice-presidential elections are held every six years.
On June 30, 2016, Rodrigo Duterte was sworn in as the 16th and current president.
During President Duterte`s term he faced numerous problems concerning the country, as
an example, the ongoing pandemic, this pandemic or also known as Covid-19 is the cause
of the abrupt downfall of various countries worldwide, the Philippines included. The
pandemic is reason why the economy of the Philippines dropped, but President Duterte
endured. Although there are still several problems, Philippines is gradually recovering to
be back from its former glory.
Through the years, the national elections in the Philippines are certainly significant
to its people, but because of the pandemic the national elections this year is especially
significant, why? As mentioned earlier the pandemic caused the Philippines’s economy
and former standing to drop. The next president will be the one in charge for the
Philippines to be back from its former glory, or for better, surpass it. This year’s national
election is very much hyped because its presidential and vice-presidential candidates.
Although some the presidential and vice-presidential candidate’s supporters are arguing
over the internet, they still maintained a friendly debate on why they have chosen this
candidate since some of the candidates have controversies that are being questioned. This
is why this year’s national election is especially significant to the people in the
Philippines to this day.
