THE INSTITUTIONAL

BACKGROUND

International Organizations
• Most countries have some kind of professional
or legal association for their architects and
interior architects.
UIA
• As a federation of professional societies from numerous nations, the
International Union of Architects, or Union Internationale des Architectes
(UIA), was established in Lausanne, Switzerland, in 1948.

• From the 27 delegations that attended the founding assembly, the UIA has
expanded to include the major international organizations representing
architects in 131 nations and territories. As a result, it currently represents
over 1,300,000 architects globally through these organizations.
• The Professional Practice Commission was founded by the UIA and has
created a foundational framework for global norms of professionalism for
architects. This framework, which was adopted at the 1999 UIA Congress
in Beijing, helps countries and professional architectural associations
create national standards and come to agreements on mutual recognition
for the practice of architecture.
ACE
• As the only organization that represents architects at
the European level, the Architects' Council of Europe
(ACE) seeks to speak for the architectural profession as
a whole.

• The regulatory and professional representative bodies


of all EU member states, accession nations,
Switzerland, and Norway make up its membership,
which has its headquarters in Brussels.

• ACE serves as a representative body for more than


450,000 architects throughout Europe.
The American Institute of Architects
(AIA)
• In New York City, the American Institute of
Architects (AIA) was established in 1857.
Rather of being a governing or controlling
body, the AIA is a representative body. It
creates regions inside the United States, and a
member of the Board of Directors represents
each of those regions.
National Architectural Accrediting
Board, Inc. (NAAB)
• The National Architectural Accrediting Board,
Inc. (NAAB) is responsible for accrediting
professional degree programs in schools of
architecture in the United States.
RIBA
• The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA)
is a professional body for architects primarily
in the United Kingdom, but also
internationally, founded for the advancement
of architecture under its royal charter granted
in 1837, three supplemental charters and a
new charter granted in 1971.
Chamber of Architects of Turkey
• The Chamber of Architects of Turkey (CAT) was
founded in 1954 with a special law. It is a
Constitutional professional organization
entrusted with the formulation of rules and
regulations pertaining to architectural practice
while seeking public interest and the benefit
of the society in general.
International Federation of Interior
Architects/Designers
• «The International Federation of Interior
Architects/Designers (IFI) represents professional
interior architects and interior designers. Founded in
Copenhagen, Denmark on September 20, 1963 as a
not-for-profit, limited liability company to unite the
profession and act as a forum for interior design
issues,IFI is an associations' association, serving on the
global level a membership of some thirty national
organizations, and representing by 2015, 270,000
designers, educators and industrialists in 110
countries»

European Council of Interior Architects

• The European Council of Interior Architects is the


representative body for the European professional
organisations in Interior Architecture and Design. Founded
in 1992, ECIA currently represents 18 members-national
organizations, with over 16000 professionals Interior
Architects/Designers.

• ECIA provides a common platform for the exchange of


information on best professional practice. It endorses
minimum common standards of education and professional
profile for the associated Interior Architects/ Designers in
the member organisation.
British Institute of Interior Design
• The BIID aims to promote professionalism in
interior design and to this end has published
jointly with the Royal Institute of British
Architects (RIBA) the standard form of
designer's appointment.
ASID
• The American Society of Interior Designers
(ASID) is a nonprofit organization based in the
United States that promotes the profession of
interior design. It has chapters throughout the
United States and Canada.
Chamber of Interior Architects of
Turkey
• Starting its activities under the name of the
Turkish Association of Interior Architects in
1975, the Chamber of Interior Architects
joined the Union of Chambers of Turkish
Engineers and Architects (UCTEA) as the 18th
chamber and since then, it has been in the
status of chamber in the world with its 43
years long established structure.
