AIRSHOW NETWORK (GENESYS) AIRBORNE TELEPHONE SETUP GUIDE


(AIRCELL/IRIDIUM)

This document (software) may contain technical data which may be


restricted for export under the Export Administration Regulations (EAR), or
exported from the United States in accordance with the EAR. Diversion
contrary to U.S. law is prohibited.

1. Purpose

This Service Information Letter supplements the following documents with


instructions for installing the Airshow Network Data Communications Unit
(DCU) with AirCell phone systems.

2. System Requirements

A. Supported AirCell Systems


This SIL discusses the configuration of the Airshow Network for use
with the following versions of AirCell system:
• AST 3500 Air Satellite Tranceiver system (AirCell air-to-ground,
pending offerability testing, and Iridium SATCOM)
• ST 3100 Satellite Tranceiver system (Iridium SATCOM only)
• ST 3120 2-channel Satellite Tranceiver system with Rev. D or later
software (Iridium SATCOM only)
• AGT.02 Air-to-Ground system (pending Airshow offerability testing)
• AT.02 Air-only system (pending Airshow offerability testing)

B. Airshow Network DCU Software


Airshow operational software Rev. P4 and later includes support for
the Iridium SATCOM phone system. The Iridium phone system is not
configurable through the Genesys configuration editor and must be
specified at the time customer configuration software is ordered.

CAUTION: DO NOT USE THE CONFIGURATION EDITOR TO
CHANGE AUTOMATIC UPDATE INTERVALS IN A
SYSTEM SET UP FOR IRIDIUM. ANY CHANGE TO
THESE SETTINGS WILL DISABLE THE IRIDIUM PHONE
SELECTION IN THE AIRSHOW DCU.
C. DCU Hardware Requirement
The DCU connects to the Iridium phone system’s modem via an RS-
232 connection. To support this connection to the AST 3500, ST 3100,
or ST 3120 phone system, the DCU must have the following mod
installed:
• P/N 92006x Mod “AA” or “AD”
• P/N 92009x Mod “H” or “M”
• P/N 92007x Mod L

For use with the AST 3500 phone system, the DCU must be installed
with an Airshow Flight Deck Controller (FDC, P/N 922002-X) or a
Digital Cockpit Controller (DCC, formerly TTD controller, P/N 911010-
1) to permit selection of the phone source for an update call.
3. AirCell AST 3500 Cellular and Satellite Telecommunication System

The AirCell AST 3500 supports a data rate of 2.4 kbps over Iridium and a
data rate up to 9.6 kbps over the air-ground cellular interface. Offerability
testing for the cellular interface with the Airshow Network is not complete as
of the publication of this document.
A. Installation Guidelines
(1) Figure 1 shows how to connect the 1/2-ATR DCU (P/N 92006X)
to the AirCell AST 3500 “system” connector.

(2) Figure 2 shows how to connect a flange mount DCU (P/N 92009X
or 92007X) to the AirCell AST 3500 “system” connector.

B. Airshow Network Software Configuration
When the Airshow Network (Genesys) is installed with an AST 3500 as
shown in Figure 1 or Figure 2, order Airshow Network custom
configuration software set up for Phone 1 = AirCell, Phone 2 =
IRIDIUM, phone select = Menu. The FDC menu must include a phone
selection item.

C. Validate the Installation
Airshow Rev. P4 operational software supports a set of built-in
diagnostics that can be used to troubleshoot DCU operation. The
Phone Configuration screen is useful for troubleshooting Airshow
Network operation. Access the built-in diagnostics with the following
steps:
(1) Connect an RS-232 serial mouse or controller to the 9-pin serial
connector on the DCU (J1 on 92006X or J7 on 92009x/92007x).
(2) With the DCU in normal operating mode, hold down both mouse
buttons for about 20 seconds. (The process is similar to launching
the configuration editor, except that it occurs during normal
program operation instead of during copyright page display). The
DCU may briefly display the Airshow Network cabin main menu
before switching to the Input Validation display.
(3) When Input Validation is displayed, hold down both mouse
buttons a second time until the DCU switches to the Test Cycle.
In this diagnostic mode, a series of pages cycles onto the display,
switching approximately every 16 seconds.
(4) Figure 3 shows the Phone Configuration Page. On this page,
make sure that the AirCell and Iridium phone systems are
configured correctly.

NOTE: Phone 1/Phone 2 as configured on the CD are
displayed as Phone 0/Phone 1 on the diagnostic
page.

(5) Hold down both mouse buttons a third time until the display
changes to the Configuration Verification page.
(6) Hold down both mouse buttons a fourth time to return the Airshow
to normal operating mode.
(7) Lock the AST 3500 into Iridium mode via the AirCell handset.
Press the FCN key, then 3, 3. The handset displays IRIDIUM.
(8) Select Iridium from the FDC Phone Select menu, and initiate an
Airshow Network update call.
(9) At the start of the call, the DCU’s flight deck video output displays
the Uplink In Progress screen with “Dialing <phone type>” in the
Communication Status area. Make sure that the phone type
displayed is Iridium.
(10) A successful update call validates the installation for Iridium
updates.
(11) Lock the AST 3500 into cellular mode via the AirCell handset.
Press the FCN key, the 3, 1. The handset displays the letter S
and a number of signal strength bars.
(12) Select AirCell from the FDC Phone Select menu, and initiate an
Airshow Network update call.
(13) Make sure that the Uplink In Progress screen on the flight deck
video output displays “Dialing AirCell.”
NOTE: AirCell air cellular service is not available on the
ground. The cellular system must be tested during a
test flight. The handset should display at least 3 signal
bars. Cellular coverage is most consistent above
10,000 ft. AGL.

4. AirCell ST 3100 Satellite Transceiver System

The AirCell ST 3100 supports a data rate of 2.4 kbps over Iridium.
A. Installation Guidelines
Connect the Airshow DCU’s COM2 RS-232 port to the ST 3100 as
shown in Figure 1 or Figure 2. The ST 3100 does not have the POTS
Tip and Ring connection.

B. Airshow Network Software Configuration
When the Airshow Network (Genesys) is installed with an ST 3100 as
shown in Figure 1 or Figure 2, order Airshow Network custom
configuration software set up for Phone 1 = IRIDIUM, no Phone 2.
C. Validate the Installation
Airshow Rev. P4 operational software supports a set of built-in
diagnostics that can be used to troubleshoot DCU operation. The
Phone Configuration screen is useful for troubleshooting Airshow
Network operation. Access the built-in diagnostics with the following
steps:

Phone 0. The choices for Phone 1 and Phone 2 are arbitrary.
Phone Select Type should be Menu.
(5) Hold down both mouse buttons a third time until the display
changes to the Configuration Verification page.
(6) Hold down both mouse buttons a fourth time to return the Airshow
to normal operating mode.
(7) Initiate an Airshow Network update call.
(8) At the start of the call, the DCU’s flight deck video output displays
the Uplink In Progress screen with “Dialing <phone type>” in the
Communication Status area. Make sure that the phone type
displayed is Iridium.
(9) A successful update call validates the installation for Iridium
updates.

5. AirCell ST 3120 Dual-Channel Satellite Transceiver System

The AirCell ST 3120 supports a data rate of 2.4 kbps over Iridium. It is
designed to be an add-on to a MagnaStar C-750 or C-2000 system. See the
MagnaStar interconnect SIL, 920620-09-8 for more information on the
MagnaStar C-2000.
A. Installation Guidelines
(1) Figure 4 shows how to connect the 1/2-ATR DCU (P/N 92006X)
to the AirCell ST 3120 “system” connector.

B. Airshow Network Software Configuration
The MagnaStar C-2000 with 4.0C or later software supports a single-
channel data rate of 4.8 kbps. The Iridum Satcom supports a data rate
of 2.4 kbps. Table 1 summarizes the settings to use when ordering
Airshow Network custom configuration software to work with an
installation similar to Figure 4 or Figure 5.

C. Validate the Installation

changes to the Configuration Verification page.
(6) Hold down both mouse buttons a fourth time to return the Airshow
to normal operating mode.

6. AirCell AT/AGT.02 Cellular Telecommunication System

The AirCell AT/AGT.02 supports a data rate of 9.6 kbps over the air-ground
cellular interface. Offerability testing for the Airshow Network over the
cellular interface is not complete as of the publication of this document.
A. Installation Guidelines
(1) Figure 6 shows how to connect the 1/2-ATR DCU (P/N 92006X)
to the AT/AGT.02 Tip and Ring interface.

B. Airshow Network Software Configuration
When the Airshow Network (Genesys) is installed with an AT/AGT.02
as shown in Figure 6 or Figure 7, order Airshow Network custom
configuration software set up for Phone 1 = AirCell.
The Genesys Configuration Editor allows selection of the AirCell phone
type. To change the phone setting to AirCell, do the following steps.
(1) Enter the Configuration Editor (refer to GENESYS® Installation
Manual for instructions) and click on the MISC box.
(2) From the MISC menu, select the Phone 1 setup screen.
(3) With OS Rev. P2 and later, the Airshow Network displays a
screen similar to Figure 8.

(4) On the Phone 1 screen, select AirCell.
(5) Make sure that the “Enable Phone 2 Setup” checkbox is not
selected, as shown in Figure 8.
7. Operating Considerations

A. Phone Select
For use with the AST 3500 phone system, the DCU must be installed
with an Airshow Flight Deck Controller (FDC, P/N 922002-X) or a
Digital Cockpit Controller (DCC, formerly TTD controller, P/N 911010-
x)
(1) The customer configuration software must include the Phone
Select feature in the FDC or DCC menu.
(2) During flight, lock the AirCell handset into AirCell or Iridium Mode
before initiating an Airshow Network update call with the following
steps.
(a) To lock the system into Iridium mode, press the FCN key,
then 3, 3. The handset displays IRIDIUM.
(b) To lock the system into AirCell cellular mode, press the FCN
key, the 3, 1. The handset displays the letter S and a
number of signal strength bars.

(c) To return the system to Auto Select Network Mode after an
update call, press the FCN key, then 3, 2. The handset
displays AUTO briefly, then displays the indicator for the
current mode.
B. Iridium Recovery Time
Allow three minutes between data calls on the Iridium phone to let the
system recover fully. Reduced connectivity may result from a shorter
rest period.

Notes:
1. Current Phone reflects the current Phone Select menu selection. When AIRCELL is
selected, Current Phone is 0. When IRIDIUM is selected, Current Phone is 1.
2. The Phone 2 setting is arbitrary and may display as MSTAR24; this phone selection is
not used during normal operation
3. If CAS-0 is installed, the Phone Ctrl In State is 1 when MagnaStar is available, otherwise
it is 0. Phone Select Type is Magna if CAS-0 if installed, or MENU if it is not. Current
Phone reflects the phone selected either by the CAS-0 input or by the FDC menu.

(1) The last line on the Phone Configuration page shows the path for
the phone protocol configuration file (“NP2.INI”) that the DCU is
using. When contacting Rockwell Collins for technical support,
you may be asked for this path.
