Filipino News Writing Exercise:
Smuggling ng metal
Here’s an exercise for news writing in filipino.

nagrereklamo.
 Ang reklamo ay nagmula sa Philippine Iron and Steel Institute at Galvanized Iron Wire
Manufacturing Association at ipinarating kina Department of Finance (DOF) Sec. Cesar
Purisima at Bureau of Customs (BOC) Commissioner Ruffy Biazon.
 Ang Philippine Iron and Steel Institute at Galvanized Iron Wire Manufacturing Association
at gymnastics.
metal.

the countys Girl Scout Council no loonger will acept any checks during its annual cookie
sale-a-thon. During its last sale-a-thon, the council lost $4,284 due to worthlesschecks. “That
may not sound like a lot, but its a serious loss for us,” said Linda Goree, the Girl Scoust
county executive. “It cuts into our profits, but al so wastes too many hours of our timme.”
Next year, Goree said, thecountys Girl Scouts will accept only cash Two factors agravated
the prov problem during the scouts last sale-a-thon, Goree continued. first, more pepople
paid by check. Second, a larger percentage of the checks teh Girl Scouts received bounced.
“Some people pay by check beause they don’t have the cash, ” Goree said. “Or, they want to
place a large order. We have people who place orders for $100 or more, and thosse poeple
are especially likely to pay by check.

we also receive checks for a little as one or two dollars.”

Scout leaders call people who signed the checks that bounce and, in most cases, ask them
to mail neW checks to the cty. office. The scout leadesr are unable to reach everyone,
however. Smoe People have moved. Other s do not have telephones—or do not seem to
answer their tele phones. “usually its an honest mistake, ad andpeople are embarrassed
when we call them,” Goree said. “THey want to take care of the problem right away.

Other people say they want to pay but dont have the money, and we can

usually work something out with them. Unfortunately, there are other people who get mad at
us, like its our fault or something, and refuse to pay. Or, they write new checks that also
bounce. It puts our leadess in a terrible situaton. A Girl Scout leadershouldn’t have to deal
with problems like that. Also, its not a good situation or example for our girls, and that’s the
reason for our ne w policy, why we’ll no longer accept any checks.”

Being a middle-aged man and single can be deadly, too sociologists at your college warned
today The sociologists, Margo Matos and LeeAnne verkler, found that middle-aged men who
remain single double their chances of dying. For 10 years, Matos and verkler tracked one
thoussand men in the state.

All of the men were 40 old years at

the start of the study, and half were married. Matos and Verkler fuond that 11.7 percent of
the men who remained unmarried died before their 50th birthday, compared to only 5.9
percent of themen who remained married. Some of the maried men were divorced or
widowed during the study, and 7.1 percnt of those who remainedd alone for at least half the
period also died. “We arent sure of all the reasons,” verkler said. “That’s what we’ll look at
next. WE think poor diet plays a role. Also the use of alcohol, smoking, a lack of exercise
and low incomes. Men who live by themselves seem to do more drinking and smoking, and
many don’t PREprepare good meals for themselves. Plus there’s the absence of social
support. It ehlps to have someone to talk with, someone who shpares your li fe and is there
to provide help when you need it.” Matos and Verkler found that men also live longer if they
have a roommate. “It doesn’t matter who the persn is, a parent, child orfreind,” Verkler said.
“We’ve found, however, that none of the alternatives are as conducive to a long life as a
stable marriage. those are the man who live the longest, the men who are happily marrried.”

Uber Philippines resumed its operations on Tuesday after submitting a motion for
reconsideration against the Land Transportation and Franchising and Regulatory Board’s
(LTFRB) one-month suspension. “In response to overwhelming rider and driver demand, we
have filed a motion for reconsideration with the LTFRB,” Uber Philippines said in a statement
posted on its Facebook page. “This means that Uber’s operations will continue until the
motion is resolved. Consequently, we will be resuming serving Metro Manila and Cebu,”
Uber added. Uber’s one-month suspension after it found out that the transport network

Malacañang is backing the decision of the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory
Board (LTFRB) to suspend for a month the operations of transport network company (TNC)
Uber. LTFRB’s decision came after Uber defied its July 26 order not to accept and activate
new drivers onto its platform. “We affirm the positive and beneficial service offered by the
Transport Network Companies (TNCs). However, as per LTFRB, Uber Systems unduly
challenged its rules and instructions. The issue here is striking a balance between
innovations and laws and the regulations of the LTFRB,” Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto
Abella said in a Palace briefing on Tuesday. “It understands the situation and therefore we
support the LTFRB,” Abella added.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un said Tuesday he would hold off on a planned missile
strike near Guam, but warned the highly provocative move would go ahead in the event of
further “reckless actions” by Washington. Some analysts suggested Kim’s comments
opened a possible path to de-escalating a growing crisis fueled by a bellicose war of words
between US President Donald Trump and the North Korean leadership. Their recent
exchanges were focused on a North Korean threat to fire a volley of four missiles over Japan
towards the US territory of Guam, which hosts a number of strategic military bases. The
North’s official KCNA news agency said Kim was briefed on the “plan for an enveloping fire
at Guam” during an inspection on Monday of the Strategic Force command in charge of the
nuclear-armed state’s missile units.

A barangay chair is being investigated by Malabon City officials after a clandestine maternity
clinic was found to be operating at the second floor of the Barangay Tonsuya health center
last week. According to a statement from city hall on Monday, “probers will invite Barangay
Tonsuya chair Pol Ombas for questioning on allegations that the payments derived from the
clandestine operation of the [birthing center] were all remitted … to the barangay.” “Who are
benefiting from this underground maternity clinic is a question that probers would like to find
out,” it added. ADVERTISEMENT

The maternity clinic, which was found to be operating without permits, was discovered after
police officers and city hall personnel raided the health center and arrested Lea Aricayos, 41,
a barangay worker. Aricayos, a licensed midwife, had just helped a mother give birth when
she was picked up by the joint team on Aug. 8. According to her, mothers pay P1,200 to give
birth in the secret maternity clinic. The money goes directly to the barangay although
Aricayos did not say who received the payments.

disease much worse," patuloy ni Poe. Aniya nasa 200,000 mananakay ang maaapektuhan

to choosing convenient, safe, and reliable transportation services to brave the daily

“All poultry suppliers of JFC have confirmed that
they are not affected by the current avian flu as they are outside the bio security kilometer
range and their most updated tests show no manifestation of any disease,” dagdag ng nila.

Gringo Honasan matapos

magpiyansa ngayong Biyernes sa Laguna. Nagbayad ng P60,000 si Honasan para sa
dalawang counts ng graft kaugnay ng umano’y maanomalayang paggamit niya ng kaniyang
priority development assistance fund noong 2012.
Ombudsman.

"There were said to be
indications as early as May but the commercial poultry operators did not report it
immediately. Then the situation worsened around July," wika ni Piñol.
"I immediately ordered the deployment of quarantine
officers within the one-kilometer radius. We will kill all poultry as there are a lot of those
being used for cockfights," dagdag ng kalihim. "I don’t care if we have to kill a million
including those free range and stray fowls. What is that compared to the whole poultry
industry? We have to do it because we don’t want the disease to spread," patuloy ni Piñol.

sina Undersecretary Joel Sy Egco, dating editor at chief of reporters ng Manila Times;
PCCOO Assistant Secretary Joseph Lawrence Garcia; journalist/consultant Albert Gamboa
at PNA acting Executive Editor Louis Morente.
Zeric Soriano; Lipa City Police chief,
Supt. Barde, Sto. Tomas; Batangas COP Supt. Giovanni Zibalo at San Pablo City Police
chief, Supt. Ronan Claraval.

_______________________________________________________________________

ni Armed Forces of the Philippines spokesperson Brig. Gen.
So between 20 to 40 na lang siguro

CIBAC partylist Rep. Sherwin Turla. Ang botohan ay matapos namang mag-mosyon si
Marinduque Rep.
tanging sina ACT Teachers Partylist Rep. Antonio Tinio at Gabriela Women’s Partylist Rep.

“It was the President’s directive to “take care of the poor” and Sec. Ubial had said that the
DOH will epitomize the President’s tagline of “malasakit.” He had been critical of people
lining up outside hospitals, camping at the gates of hospitals even before the day breaks,
just to get medical attention”, ani Zarate.

malversation case na isinampa ng Office of the Ombudsman nitong nakaraang taon. Iginiit
“In conclusion,
let it be stressed that this verdict of acquittal is based on the failure of the prosecution to
present proof beyond reasonable doubt that the accused indeed used the 2008 Calamity
Fund of San Juan City in the procurement and payment of the subject firearms,” nakasaad
“It must be remembered
that in criminal cases, the burden of proof is on the prosecution and unless it discharge that
burden, the herein accused need not even offer evidence in their behalf and they would be
entitled to an acquittal,” dagdag nito.

Community role fits ‘Mr. Optimism’
Allan Jamir serves numerous organizations — with
a smile

Volunteer extraordinaire
Allan Jamir

By Mike Dauplaise
It’s a good thing Allan Jamir was blessed with a big, bright smile, because the man people call
“Mr. Optimism” is seldom without one.
Jamir spreads sunshine wherever he goes, based in an unflappable attitude rooted in
his beloved Optimist organization’s positive creed. “Jammer,” as he’s known from the
mispronunciation of his last name (correctly hah-MEER), is involved with no less than nine
different organizations.
His commitment to the community, especially its youth, is so much a part of his identity that Rick
Chernick, CEO of Camera Corner/Connecting Point, recently changed Jamir’s title from vice
president of corporate sales to a more appropriate vice president of marketing and community
relations.
“Al is one of the most sincere, happy, energetic human beings you’re ever going to meet,”
Chernick says. “He’s almost a perfect person. He represents Green Bay, our company and
himself very professionally in everything he does.”
Born in Manila, Philippines, and raised in Burlington, Wis., Jamir’s smile jumps out from his dark
complexion as he races from seemingly one commitment to the next. As district governor for the
Optimist organization in 2000-2001, Jamir traveled throughout the Northern half of Wisconsin to
promote its “Friend of Youth” philosophy.
“Everything I do, someway, somehow, positively touches the lives of kids,” Jamir says. “When
you see me, you might not know what group I’m representing. I like to think I represent all. I’ve
gotten a reputation as a community resource.”
Among the many boards Jamir sits on are the United Way, Scholarships Inc., Heritage Hill
Foundation, Horizons Community Credit Union (chair), Big Brothers/Big Sisters (past board
member), Brian LaViolette Foundation, and an ambassador for the Green Bay Area Chamber of
Commerce. That’s in addition to the time he donates to projects with the Greater Green Bay
Optimist Club.
Jamir and his wife Penny are role models in the lives of many young people. While they have no
children of their own, the couple has nine godchildren, Penny teaches second grade at Langlade
School, and Al reads to the kids every week.
“One of the reasons I went to work for Rick (Chernick) is because Rick’s philosophy is very much
in sync with mine,” Jamir notes. “We both love our customers, and we’re both so involved in the
community. It’s like a match made in heaven.”
Jamir actually called on Chernick as a territory rep for Hewlett-Packard prior to joining the
Camera Corner/Connecting Point team in 1991.
“Business is not all about making money, and there are only so many boards I can be on,”
Chernick states. “Al still sells for me, but I need a guy that can help me in the community. He’s
the guy.”
Jamir’s love of dealing with kids blossomed when H-P moved him to Green Bay in 1988. He
served as an assistant coach for a youth baseball team (ages 9-11) coached by his neighbor that
year, and was struck by how the kids responded to instruction.
Despite often feeling as though his words were falling on deaf ears, the infielders turned a
picture-perfect double play in the league championship game that made it all worthwhile.
“That’s where the spark started. I learned that I absolutely loved helping the kids and serving the
kids,” he says, crediting his high school science and band teachers for priming that part of his
persona. “I thought, ‘You know what? I’ve got a lot of things I can teach kids and share with
them.’
“If I can do something that makes people move forward positively, then I feel I’ve done my job.”

Reporting

One of the most fundamental differences between journalism and other

forms of writing is the way journalists obtain the information they write
about. Journalists obtain information through a variety of reporting
techniques, which can include interviewing sources, looking through
government documents, researching old articles, and observing events
firsthand.
Good news writing begins with good, accurate reporting. Journalists
perform a public service for citizens by presenting truthful facts in
honest, straight-forward articles.

News Values

Journalists commonly use six values to determine how newsworthy a

story or elements of a story are. Knowing the news values can help a
journalist make many decisions, including:

 What information to give first in a news article, and in the lede

 Which articles to display on a newspaper’s front page
 What questions to ask in an interview

The six news values are:

1. Timeliness- Recent events have a higher news value than less

recent ones.
2. Proximity- Stories taking place in one’s hometown or
community are more newsworthy than those taking place far
away.
3. Prominence- Famous people and those in the public eye have
a higher news value than ordinary citizens.
4. Uniqueness/oddity- A story with a bizarre twist or strange
occurrences. “Man bites dog” instead of “dog bites man.”
5. Impact- Stories that impact a large number of people may be
more newsworthy than those impacting a smaller number of
people.
6. Conflict- “If it bleeds, it leads.” Stories with strife, whether it’s
actual violence or not, are more interesting.

The newsworthiness of a story is determined by a balance of these six

values. There is no set formula to decide how newsworthy a story is,
but in general, the more of these six values a story meets, the more
newsworthy it is.

Libel

Libel is defined as the published defamation of a person’s character

based on misleading or inaccurate facts. Newspaper reporters can
often run into issues of libel because it is their job to write truthful
articles about people that might not always be flattering.

Even though we live in a country with a free press, journalists cannot

write anything they want. Reporters do not have the right to state
something about a person that could damage their reputation and that
is untruthful.
One of the easiest ways to protect oneself from libel is to make sure to
always do accurate reporting and to attribute all information in an
article. If you write something about someone that you’re unsure
about, just ask yourself if it’s true, and how you know it’s true. Rumors,
gossip, and information you received from an anonymous or unreliable
source are all dangerous to report, and they could run you the risk of a
libel case.

Lede

The lede (or lead) of a news article is the first sentence, usually
written as one paragraph, that tells the most important information of
the story. When writing a lede, it is helpful to use the “tell a friend”
strategy. Imagine you had to sum up to a friend, in one sentence, what
your story is about. How would you sum up quickly what happened? A
story’s lede answers the “Five W’s” in a specific order: Who? What?
When? Where? Why?

For example:

The Atlanta Police Department will hold a memorial service Wednesday

at Holy Christ Church in Buckhead for fallen officer Lt. James
Montgomery.

WHO: The Atlanta Police Department

WHAT: will hold a memorial service
WHEN: Wednesday
WHERE: Holy Christ Church in Buckhead
WHY: for fallen officer Lt. James Montgomery

Other Examples:

Gwinnett County Public Schools was awarded $250,000 early

Wednesday as a finalist for what’s considered the Nobel Prize of public
education.

A man beat an Army reservist in front of a Morrow Cracker Barrel,

yelling racial slurs at her as he kicked her in the head, Morrow police
said.

Examples courtesy of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Inverted Pyramid

News articles are written in a structure known as the “inverted

pyramid.” In the inverted pyramid format, the most newsworthy
information goes at the beginning of the story and the least
newsworthy information goes at the end.

After you have written your story’s lede, order the information that
follows in terms of most important to least important. There is NO
formal conclusion in a journalism article the way there is in an essay or
analysis paper.

Attributing information

ALL information in a news article MUST be attributed to the source

where the reporter got his/her information. The reporter must indicate
in his/her article where material was obtained from – from an interview,
court documents, the Census, a Web site, etc. Direct quotes and
paraphrasing can be used to attribute information obtained in an
interview with a source.

For example:

According to a police report, the suspect threatened the cashier with a

gun before running away with the money.

In a 500-page government report, investigators reported evidence that

the army had committed crimes against humanity.

Integrating quotes

The first time a source is introduced in an article, you should use that
source’s full name and title. After this initial reference, use the last
name only.

For example:
“The swine flu vaccine is an incredible advance in modern medicine,”
said Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius.

When attributing a direct quote, always use the verb “said” and never
any other verbs such as “explained,” “whispered,” etc. It is also more
common to use the format “XXX said” instead of “said XXX.”

For example:

“The housing crisis is growing out of control,” Bernanke said.

Even when information from a source is not used in a direct quote and
is paraphrased instead, it still must be attributed to that source.

For example:

Bernanke said the recession is probably over.

The recession will most likely begin to recede in six to eight months,
Bernanke said.
