In your own words, state what "self" is for each of the following philosophers. After doing
so, explain how your concept of "self" is compatible with how they conceive of the self.
(Maximum of 3 sentences each.)

1. Socrates - Socrates argues that the self is made up of two parts: the body and the
soul. Socrates stated that every human being is dualistic since there are two significant
aspects: body and spirit. For me self have 2 parts, which are body and soul, body is the
physical structure of the person while the soul is the spiritual.

2. Plato - According to Plato, the Soul has three components: rational, spirited, and
appetitive. Rational is used for reason and intelligence, spirited is for the emotions, and
appetitive is used for want and need, whereas. For me self is like a soul, and soul have
3 parts which are the rational, spirited, and appetitive, rational is seeks for truth and we
use our intelligence, while spirited, we showing our emotions, and appetitive this is our
needs and wants, or our desire.

3. Augustine - According to Augustine, the body will perish on Earth, but the soul will
dwell with God. And, according to Augustine, one's soul is eternal. For me self is our
body will stay on earth, but our soul will dwell with God.

4. Descartes - Descartes defined a human being as having a body and a mind.


Descartes stated that the self consists of two different entities: cogito and extenza.
cogito is the mind's thought that thinks, and extenza is the mind's extension, which is
the body.

5. Hume - For Hume, the self is nothing more than a collection of impressions. And the
self is not a separate entity from the physical body.

6. Kant - According to Kant, the ego not only defines one's identity but also serves as
the source of all human knowledge.

7. Ryle - For Ryle, the Self is not a thing that can be found and studied, but rather a
handy word that individuals use to refer to all of their actions.

8. Merleau- Ponty - Ponty believes that mind and body cannot be divided since they are
all one. For me, self is our mind and body. Our mind and body cannot be divided or
separate because they are all one.
