In your own words state what “self” is for each of the following philosophers.
After doing so, explain how your concept of self is compatible with how they conceive
the self.
1. Seocrates- He pointed out that ”self” consist of two part which is the body and the soul. The
Body is the one that stays only on the Earth: It is also the Imperfect and impermanent part of
the “self”. While the Soul is the part of self that will be the one with the Devine or our
Creator.
2. Plato-He supports his teacher’s idea that “self “ is composed of the Body and Soul, but he
added that there are 3 parts of the soul which are the Rational Soul that is responsible for the
thinking and reasoning; The Spirited Soul is responsible for your emotions. this corresponds
to your feeling if it is love, anger, happiness, etc. ; The Appetitive Soul this is the responsible
for your wants or desire like the things you want to do singing, dancing, cleaning or anything
that you really desires.
3. Augustine-he connected “self” in a religious way but just like Socrates beliefs that man is
bifurcated nature the body and the soul. The body that stays is the physical world while the
Soul is fated to live eternally with the Devine or our Creator in the Spiritual world which
“self” can live in bliss.
4. Descartes- He believe that “self’ is a combination of two entities which is the Mind and the
body. The mind which he called as Cogito it is responsible for thinking. While The Body
which He called the Extenza that helps the mind to do the things that it wants to do. Example
you’ve thought of eating the body will elp you to eat, it will do the works for the mind.
5. Hume- he believes that there are two categories of self. The Impressions is the thought of
reality which you have experience; and The Ideas it is the just the thought even without
experiencing it.
6. Kant- he contested that there are two unified parts of “self”. The Imperical Self this is the
one who experience the thing that you do and helps you to make it understandable; and the
transcendental Self is the one that analyzes your thoughts and feelings about the certain things
that you have experience.
7. Ryle- He proposed that “self” is just about the behavior that the person do in his daily life.
8. Ponty- He suggested that mind and body is cannot be separated from each other. That all the
thoughts, feelings, emotions are all connected.
“Self”
For me Socrates, Plato and St. Augustine belief of “Self” is more compatible for
me. Because there are two parts of “Self” which is the Body and Soul. Which the body is
the functional being here in the Physical Realm or The Earth that decides what to do. It’s
either the “self” will do the good things or the bad thing. I also believed that the body will
stay on the physical world and just stay in there because our body is too sinful to even
cross the Heavenly Realm. The soul is the only form the “self” can experience
immortality and communion with the God or our Creator. It is the one that can only
experience the bliss that our Creator made for us. It is also responsible for the intellect or
the thinking, the emotions that we feel, and the desires that we feel in our physical form
or our body like what Plato suggested.
