Import

This option allows you to import data into

Power BI Service directly from various data
sources such as Excel workbooks, CSV files,
and text files.

The data is stored in the Power BI Service

cloud, and you can create reports and
dashboards using the imported data.
Direct Query

This option allows you to connect to a data

source and query the data in real-time.

The data remains in the original data

source, and you can create reports and
dashboards that are always up to date with
the latest data.
Live Connection

This option allows you to connect to an

Analysis Services tabular model or Power BI
Report Server, and create reports and
dashboards using the live data.

The data is not stored in Power BI Service,

but instead, the data is queried from the
Analysis Services tabular model or Power BI
Report Server in real-time.
Power BI Dataflows

This option allows you to connect to data

sources and create dataflows to transform
and load the data into Power BI Service.

Dataflows are reusable and can be

scheduled to refresh the data at regular
intervals.

Azure Data Lake Storage Gen2, and
create reports and dashboards using
