File COmpression Intro
File COmpression Intro
File Types:
• Image
• Audio
• Video
• Text File
NOTE:
Lossy can be applied to audio/video and images but not to text files, as file cannot be re-constructed
After being compressed means the file can become meaningless e.g., a text document or a programming
code may no more be understandable if it is not un-compressed to its original form while audios/videos
and images after being compressed would be hearable and watchable, so there is a need to convert all
the text files back into their original form. That is why lossy file compression should be applied to all file
types other than text.
Audio:
• Perceptual Musical Shaping
• It removes unnecessary sounds, e.g., background noises or sound of almost same pitch
being played together, the softer sound is removed in this case.
• This would reduce sampling resolution & sampling rate.
• Due to smaller file size the audio can be shared quicker and would take less storage on
device.
Image:
• A compression algorithm is used that removes unnecessary data e.g., details that the human
eye cannot see.
• This reduces the color depth.
• Image resolution will decrease that reduces the color palette.
• Due to smaller file size the images can be shared quicker and would take less storage on
device.
Video:
• A compression algorithm is used that removes unnecessary data e.g., details that the human
eye cannot see.
• This reduces the color depth.
• Image resolution will decrease that reduces the color palette.
• It reduces the frame rate or repeating frames.
• Due to smaller file size the images can be shared quicker and would take less storage on
device.
