Objective Task #26: LIMITING REACTANT LAB

Go to: https://phet.colorado.edu/sims/html/reactants-products-and-leftovers/latest/reactants-
products-and-leftovers_en.html
Directions: Use Reactants, Products, and Leftovers simulation to create your own sandwiches and
then see how many sandwiches you can make with different amounts of ingredients.
Test your learning:

1. Predict (without using the sim) how many cheese sandwiches, as defined by the picture to the
right, you can make if you have 6 pieces of bread and 4 slices of cheese.

It will produce 3 cheese sandwiches

2. Then, use the sim to check your answer and make any corrections.

3 cheese sandwiches

B
3. Predict what would change about your number of sandwiches and thinking if you had the
same 6 pieces of bread and 4 slices of cheese, but the sandwich is made like the picture on the
right?

It will produce 2 cheese sandwiches

4. Check your prediction using the sim and make any changes
a. Why did the number of sandwiches change even though the amounts of ingredients were the
same? Research what “limiting reactant” means and then write a description in your own
words using the situations in A and B as supporting evidence.
The limiting reactant is the one that limits the amount of product that can be made. In situation
A the limiting reactant is bread so 6 pieces of bread and 4 pieces of cheese can make 3 cheese
sandwiches meanwhile in the situation B the limiting reactant is cheese, with 6 pieces of bread
and 4 pieces of cheese it can produce 2 cheese sandwiches.
b. A tricycle factory gets a shipment with 400 seats and 600 wheels. Use your ideas about Limiting
Reactants to explain how you would figure out how many tricycles can be made.
400 seats x 1 tricycle = 400 tricycles
1seat 200 seats, 200 in excess + 600 wheels = 200 tricycles
600 wheels x 1 tricycle = 200 tricycles
3 wheels
It can only make 200 tricycles and its limiting reactant is the tricycle wheels with 200 seats in
excess.
Relate the model to Chemistry:

1. The balanced chemical reaction for producing water is: 2 H2 + 1a O2  2 H2O.

2. Research the “The Law of Definite Proportions” and explain why the simulation doesn’t have
choices for the ratio of hydrogen and oxygen like it does for cheese, bread, and meat.

Every chemical compound contains fixed and constant proportions while the cheese, bread, and meat that does
not contain fixed and constant proportions.

3. Predict which reactant amounts would get the most water with the least amount of leftovers.
Explain how your understanding of Limiting Reactant helped you figure this out.

The first one because it has higher hydrogen than oxygen making less amount of leftover.
