Exercise 22: Page 255: Determine if there is evidence to conclude that the mean GPA of males who plan

to attend graduate school is larger than that of females who plan to attend graduate school using the
data in the Excel file Graduate School Survey.

Step 1: Establish hypothesis

H0: the mean GPA of males who plan to attend graduate school # the mean GPA of females who plan to
attend graduate school or H0: x̅ GPA of males who plan to attend graduate school # x̅ GPA of females
who plan to attend graduate school

H1: the mean GPA of males who plan to attend graduate school # the mean GPA of females who plan to
attend graduate school or H0: x̅ GPA of males who plan to attend graduate school # x̅ GPA of females
who plan to attend graduate school

Step 2: Methodology: Independent Samples t-test

Step 3: Desciptive Statistics Report

Group Statistics
Gender N Mean Std. Deviation Std. Error Mean
Undergraduate GPA Male 11 3.336 .4545 .1370
Female 8 3.613 .3980 .1407

Step 4: Assumption on Homogenity of Variances

F Levene’s test # 0.256; P-value of Levene’s test > 0.05 (0.619)

 The p-value for the Levene test is more than 0.05, then the variances are not significantly
different from each other (euqal variance assumped)

Step 5: Conclusion
 T # -1.375
 P > 0.05 (0.187) #> no statistical meaning
 The mean difference is 0.2761
 The conclusion is to fail to reject the null hypothesis H0, not enough evidence to support the
alternative hypothesis H1.
 There is NOT a significant different between the the mean GPA of males who plan to attend
graduate school and the mean GPA of females who plan to attend graduate school. The mean
GPA of females who plan to attend graduate school is larger than the mean GPA of males who
plan to attend graduate school an amount of 0.2761.
