ENVIRONMENT

Preservation of the environment as part of a sustainable development logic is an essential concern of Sagem
Communications.
The desire of Sagem Communications is to operate systems observing the environment and consequently it
has decided to integrate environmental performances in the life cycle of its products, from manufacturing to
commissioning, use and elimination.

PACKAGING:

The presence of the logo (green dot) means that a contribution is paid to an approved
national organisation to improve packaging recovery and recycling infrastructures.
To facilitate recycling, please respect the sorting rules set up locally for this kind of waste.

BATTERIES:

If your product contains batteries, they must be disposed of at appropriate collection points.

THE PRODUCT:

The crossed-out waste bin stuck on the product (or on its accessories) means that the
product belongs to the family of electrical and electronic equipment.
In this respect, the European regulations ask you to dispose of it selectively:
• At sales points in the event of the purchase of similar equipment.
• At the collection points made available to you locally (drop-off centre, selective
collection, etc.).

In this way you can participate in the re-use and upgrading of WEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic
Equipment), which can have an effect on the environment and human health.

1.3 - IDU PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION

The following section details the physical features of the SAGEM LINK F-A IDU.
• Front Panel Indicators with LED descriptions
• Front Panel Connections
• Modules

1.3.1 - Front Panel Indicators with LED descriptions

SLF-A IDU can be configured with different modules.

Controller Status LED

Power/Fault LED Master I/O LED STM-1 I/O LED Modem Status LED
DC Input

Figure 1-1 - SLF-A IDU Front Panel - 1+0, STM-1 Configuration

Each module includes a LED which displays its status.

Modem Status LED is described in the following table.

LED STATUS
Green Active Locked Link
Orange Standby Locked Link (1+1 Non-Diversity Only)
Flashing Green Low SNR
Flashing Orange Unlocked

The controller status LED is the primary front panel indicator of alarms. An alarm is generated when a
specific condition is identified and is cleared when the specified condition is no longer detected. When
an alarm is posted,
1. The controller status LED turns orange for 5 seconds
2. The controller status LED turns off for 5 seconds
3. The controller status LED flashes orange the number of times specified by the first digit of the
alarm code
4. The controller status LED turns off for 3 seconds
5. The controller status LED flashes orange the number of times specified by the second digit of
the alarm code

Steps 2-5 are repeated for each alarm posted. The entire process is repeated as long as the alarms are
still posted.
For all modules, a green LED indicates normal operation while a red LED indicates a module fault.
A complete list of alarms is provided in chapter 4, section 4.4 -.
The alarm description is also displayed in the Graphical User Interface (GUI).

Power Supply DC Input

-48VDC 2-pin power connector. The IDU requires an input of -48 volts DC ±10% at the front panel DC
Input connector.
The total required power is dependent on the option cards and protection configuration (1+0, 1+1). The
front panel power connector pin numbering is 1 through 2, from left to right, when facing the unit front
panel. Pin 1 is the power supply return and is connected to unit chassis ground internally. Pin 2 should
be supplied with a nominal -48 V DC, with respect to the unit chassis (ground). The recommended
power input is -44 to -52 V DC at 2 Amps minimum. It is recommended that any power supply used be
able to supply a minimum of 100 W to the IDU.

A mating power cable connector is supplied with the SLF-A IDU. It is a 2-pin plug, 5 mm pitch,
manufactured by Phoenix Contact, P/N 17 86 83 1 (connector type MSTB 2,5/2-STF). This connector
has screw clamp terminals that accommodate 24 AWG to 12 AWG wire. The power cable wire should
be selected to provide the appropriate current with minimal voltage drop, based on the power supply
voltage and length of cable required. The recommended wire size for power cables under 10 feet in
length supplying -48 VDC is 18 AWG.

The IDU supplies the ODU with all required power via the coaxial cable. The SLF-A IDU does not have
a power on/off switch. When DC power is connected to the IDU, the digital radio powers up and is
operational.

Alarm/Serial Interface
DB-15HD female connector for two Form-C relay alarm outputs (rated load: 1A @ 24 VDC), two TTL
alarm outputs, four TTL alarm inputs, and Serial Console. The two Form-C relay alarm outputs can be
configured to emulate TTL alarm outputs by installing shorting jumpers JP6 and JP8 for relay alarm 1,
and shorting jumper JP7 and JP9 for relay alarm 2. When configured as TTL, the 2 outputs can
source/sink up to 10 mA at 5 VDC. When an alarm is present, Common is connected to Normally
Closed. Otherwise it is connected to Normally Open.

Network Management Connectors

NMS 10/100 Network Management System Connections
• NMS 10/100 1 10/100Base-TX RJ-45 modular local port connector for access to the
Network Management System (SNMP) and GUI.
• NMS 10/100 2 10/100BaseTX RJ-45 modular remote port connector for access to the
Network Management System (SNMP). This port to be used for consecutive point networks.

Ethernet Wayside Channel (option)

When operating in 1xSTM-1 configuration, an Ethernet wayside channel could be activated in option,
only for ETSI class 5A. This wayside channel is not available with ETSI Class 5B.
This channel is a 10/100 Base T access available on a RJ45 connector (User 10/100 1 or User 10/100 2)

This configuration involves the same modules than the 1+0 configuration, plus one redundant power
supply, one redundant modem and one redundant ODU.

1.3.4 - IDU Installation

To maintain good airflow and cooling, it is preferred that the IDU is installed in a slot that has blank
spaces above and below the unit.
To rack-mount the IDU, use the supplied mounting brackets to secure the chassis to the rack cabinet.

Attach the IDU in the 19-inch rack using 6x12 stainless steel hex screws. This attachment grounds the
IDU to the earth.

An additional grounding is possible by the use of the ground lug. Use a 6 mm2 section yellow/green
cable (minimum length required).

Three types of antenna are available for SAGEM-LINK F radios:

• Integrated antenna with SAGEM-LINK F mechanical interface (0.3 m, 0.6 m, 0.9 m, 1.2 m or
1.8 m diameter). The ODU is directly attached on the antenna using latches. In 1+1 configuration, a
coupler can be attached directly to the integrated antenna, the ODUs being attached in the same
way on the coupler.
• External antenna with standard rectangular waveguide interface, which is connected to the
SAGEM-LINK F ODU with a flex guide.
• External dual polarized antenna (frequency diversity configuration) connected by flex guides to
two ODUs.

Antennas models depend on the frequency bands:

• 6 GHz (6L) → 5.9 - 6.4 GHz

• 6 GHz (6H)→ 6.4 - 7.1 GHz
• 7 GHz → 7.1 - 7.7 GHz
• 8 GHz → 7.7 - 8.5 GHz
• 11 GHz → 10.7 - 11.7 GHz
• 13 GHz → 12.75 - 13.25 GHz
• 15 GHz → 14.4 - 15.35 GHz
• 18 GHz → 17.7 - 19.7 GHz

• 26 GHz → 24.5 - 26.5 GHz
• 32 GHz → 31.8 - 33.4 GHz
• 38 GHz → 37 - 39.5 GHz

Alternative antennas to those specified by Sagem Communications may be used, but they must meet
the following requirements:

• Minimum gain to achieve adequate link margin,

• Radiation Pattern Envelope compliant to the network and country regulations
• Mechanical characteristics to meet specific site requirements (wind and frost resistance)

Note: With some antennas, a pressurizing system is required. It is essential to observe the
manufacturer's recommendations:
y installation and connection of a pressurizing system if the antenna is connected to the ODU
with a waveguide;
y use pressurization windows and seals to protect waveguide connections.

INSTALLATION

1.4.1 - Antenna mount

In most cases, the antenna mounts consist of tubular poles (diameter 88.9 to 114 mm).
If the antenna is installed on towers using another type of structure (e.g., square-section tower),
special mounting kits must be used for this support.

The following precautions must always be taken:

- Allow enough clearance (±10°) about the alignment axis. Leave also adequate space around
the ODU to allow easy mounting/dismantling.
- Make sure that nothing obstructs the link between the two antennas, even partially,
- Install a lightning rod (Franklin) and earthing.

Note: If there is an existing lightning rod, make sure that the ODU installation site is covered
by the lightning protection cone.

- Misalignment under extreme weather conditions must not exceed ± 20 min angle in elevation
and azimuth.

The antenna mount may be secured in different ways depending on the antenna installation site
type and environment:

- Mounting pole secured to the HEA section with back-plates or clips each side of the HRA
section,
- Mounting pole secured to a concrete base plate with threaded rods embedded in the base.
- Wall-mounted staff (attached using dowels or back-plates with threaded rods),
- Antenna mount secured directly to a tower tube (diameter 88.9 or 114 mm).

1.4.2 - Antenna Installation

Refer to the antenna manufacturer's instructions.

INSTALLATION

1.5 - ODU INSTALLATION

Depending on the configuration and on the antenna type, there are several ODU mounting possibilities:

1.5.1 - 1+0 Configuration with integrated antenna

The ODU is directly attached to the antenna with 4 latches. It is connected to the IDU by a single
coaxial cable terminated with N connectors.

Figure 1-7 - ODU SAGEM-LINK F with integrated antenna

Setting the polarization:

For antennas with a circular waveguide interface (7 GHz, 8 GHz, 32 GHz or 38 GHz), polarization
setting depends only on the ODU position. For vertical polarization, make sure that the arrow on
the ODU cover is vertical, for horizontal polarization, turn the ODU 90 degrees.

Vertical polarization Horizontal polarization

Figure 1-8 - Polarization setting in 1+0 configuration

Page 16/120 SAGEM-LINK F-A Installation and Operation Manual – 253 230 884-A
INSTALLATION

If the integrated antenna has a rectangular waveguide interface (6 GHz, 11 GHz, 13 GHz, 15 GHz,
18 GHz, 23 GHz or 26 GHz), then the choice of polarization depends on the antenna source
position. Note that in this case, the large side of the waveguides, antenna side, and the ODU must
coincide.
For vertical polarization, the large side of the waveguide must be in horizontal position. ODU side,
the arrow at the back of the box must be in vertical position.
For horizontal polarization, the large side of the waveguide must be in vertical position and the
arrow on the ODU must be in horizontal position.

1.5.2 - 1+0 Configuration with pole mount and standard antenna

For standard antennas (i.e. large diameter), the ODU is mounted on a pole with a specific mounting
kit and connected to the antenna with a standard rectangular flex guide.

In this case, polarization depends on the antenna source position (vertical polarization is obtained
when the large side of the antenna waveguide is horizontal).

Figure 1-9 - ODU SAGEM-LINK F mounted on pole

1.5.3 - "Hot standby" 1+1 configuration with coupler and integrated

antenna
In this configuration, the coupler is attached on the integrated antenna with four latches. Two ODUs
are mounted each side of the coupler with four latches. Depending on the type of coupler, the
ODUs are mounted differently. Refer to the instructions marked on the coupler.

Each ODU is connected to its modem by a coaxial cable.

As in most cases the coupler is not symmetrical, it is important to identify which ODU is connected
to the main position, and which ODU is connected to protection (standby) position. The main and
standby ODU positions are indicated on the coupler.

SAGEM-LINK F-A Installation and Operation Manual – 253 230 884-A Page 17/120
INSTALLATION

Whatever the polarization, the coupler is always mounted in the same position (the ODUs must be
vertical).

The IDU has two modems connected to ODUs operating at the same frequency. The standby
transmitter is configured automatically by the software in "Mute" position.

Figure 1-10 - SAGEM-LINK F 1+1 configuration with coupler and integrated antenna

Vertical polarization Horizontal polarization

Figure 1-11 - Polarization setting on 1+1 coupler

1.5.4 - 1+1 hot standby configuration with remote mounted coupler

and standard antenna
The coupler is attached on the remote mount and connected to the standard antenna by a
rectangular flex waveguide.
The two ODUs are mounted vertically each side of the coupler, in compliance with the instructions
shown on the coupler. Each ODU is connected to its modem with a coaxial cable.
Polarization setting is done antenna side.

Page 18/120 SAGEM-LINK F-A Installation and Operation Manual – 253 230 884-A
INSTALLATION

It is also necessary to identify ODU cables (Main or Standby) with labels.

The IDU has two modems connected to ODUs operating at the same frequency. The standby
transmitter is configured automatically by the software in "Mute" position.

1.5.5 - 1+1 space diversity configuration with 2 antennas

This configuration is similar to "hot standby" except that the ODUs are not coupled to the same
antenna: they are located at different positions, each connected to its own antenna.

This configuration is possible with integrated or standard antennas.

The IDU has two modems connected to ODUs operating at the same frequency. The standby
transmitter is configured automatically by the software in "Mute" position.

1.5.6 - 1+1 frequency diversity configuration with remote mounts and

dual polarized antenna
In this configuration, each ODU is remote mounted on a pole and connected to an antenna access
with a flex guide. It is important to identify the cables of the ODU mounted in vertical polarization
(main) and that mounted in horizontal polarization (standby).

The IDU has two modems connected to ODUs operating at the two different frequencies. The two
transmitters transmit permanently.

1.6 - INSTALLING THE IDU TO ODU COAXIAL CABLE

Two types of cable are recommended: RG8/X (1/4") for lengths less than or equal to 80 m, and
RG8/U (3/8") for length less than or equal to 130 m. Andrew LDF4-50A cable can be used for
lengths up to 400 m. Other cables may be used, but must be compatible as regards outdoor use
(resistance to UV), losses, shielding (double or triple braid) and characteristic impedance (50
Ohm).

Only connectors recommended by the cable manufacturer should be used. These connectors must
be assembled in compliance with the manufacturer's recommendations.

Since the Modem ODU access is a TNC type connector, the cable must be equipped with an
angled TNC male connector on the IDU side, and with a N straight male connector on the ODU
side.

Self-vulcanizing tape is wound around the connectors to make them water-tight.

Note: Cables must be installed in compliance with the national and local regulations of the
installation site.
Special precautions are necessary when installing cables to prevent possible damage by
lightning (regular grounding).

In 1+1 configuration, it is important to distinguish between the cable connected to the main ODU
and that connected to the standby ODU. If the cables are not labelled, it is necessary to perform a
resistance check to identify each cable.

SAGEM-LINK F-A Installation and Operation Manual – 253 230 884-A Page 19/120
INSTALLATION

Disconnect the cable IDU side and short circuit the connector main ODU side (the standby ODU
connector being in open circuit). Measure the resistance of the two cables IDU side using a
multimeter. The cable to be connected on the main ODU is that with the lower resistance (now
identify the cables ODU and IDU side with a label, sticker, etc.).
Before reconnecting the IDU cables, disconnect the short circuit ODU side. Clean the connectors if
necessary and connect the cables on each ODU.

Cable Grounding

Good lightning protection is provided by grounding the antenna cable at several points. A cable
grounding kit is available on option.

The number of grounding points required mainly depends on the cable length.
Good protection is achieved with:
• A grounding kit on the cable as close as possible to the ODU
• A grounding kit on the cable at the building entrance
• A grounding kit on the cable at the bottom of the pylon
• A grounding kit every 50 meters

When facing the unit front panel, Pin 1 is the power supply return and is connected to unit chassis
ground internally. Pin 2 should be supplied with a nominal -48 V DC, with respect to the unit chassis
ground.
A mating power cable connector is supplied with the IDU. It is a 2-pin plug, 5 mm pitch,
manufactured by Phoenix Contact, P/N 17 86 83 1 (connector type MSTB 2,5/2-STF). This
connector has screw clamp terminals that accommodate 24 AWG to 12 AWG wire. The power cable
wire should be selected to provide the appropriate current with minimal voltage drop, based on the
power supply voltage and length of cable required. The recommended wire size for power cables
under 10 feet in length supplying -48 Vdc is 18 AWG.

Note: The SLF-A IDU does not have a power on/off switch.

• Alarm Serial Interface: high density 15-pin DB female connector: includes the serial access
(console), two Form-C relay alarm outputs (rated load: 1A @ 24 VDC), two TTL alarm outputs and
four TTL alarm inputs. The two Form-C relay alarm outputs can be configured to emulate TTL alarm
outputs by installing shorting jumpers JP6 and JP8 for relay alarm 1, and shorting jumper JP7 and
JP9 for relay alarm 2. When configured as TTL, the 2 outputs can source/sink up to 10 mA at 5 VDC.
When an alarm is present, Common is connected to Normally Closed. Otherwise it is connected to

1.8 - POWERING UP THE SYSTEM

Before powering up the terminal, check that:

• the equipment has not been damaged during installation

• the equipment has been assembled correctly
• in 1+1 each modem is connected to the corresponding ODU
• the antenna polarization is correct
• the IDUs, ODUs and connecting cables have been properly grounded

Page 24/120 SAGEM-LINK F-A Installation and Operation Manual – 253 230 884-A
INSTALLATION

Perform the following steps to ensure the IDU is powered up and connected to you PC:

• To connect to the IDU DC power connector, a power cable is required. A mating power cable
connector (Phoenix Contact P/N 17 86 83 1) is provided with the IDU for construction of this cable.
This connector has screw clamp terminals that accommodate 24 AWG to 12 AWG wire. The
recommended wire size for construction of power cables under 3 meters in length, supplying -48V
dc, is 16 AWG. The opposite end of the IDU power cable should have a termination appropriate for
the power supply being used.
• Using the supplied power cable connector, pin 2 (labelled -V) should be connected to the power
supply terminal supplying -48V DC, while pin 1 (labelled RET) should be connected to the power
supply return (ground).

• The power supply voltage is within the range: -44 VDC to -52 VDC (-48 VDC nominal). Measure
the voltage (polarity and amplitude) on the cable plug before plugging it in the IDU. Only negative
DC voltage must be used.

• After checking, plug the DC connector into the IDU. If the system is a 1+1 system plug also the
second DC connector into the redundant power supply.

• The power LEDs located on the power supply modules should be lit green.

• Measure voltage at the input of each terminal and record the values on the commissioning form

2.2.1 - Configuring equipment IP addresses

To manage the SLF-A remotely the IP address of the radio must be set. Set the IDU IP address to the
factory default or a known value. Use a web browser to access the IDU GUI and set the IP address as
described below in section 2.2.1.1 -. If the IP address is unknown, a HyperTerminal connection via a
serial cable can be used as described in section 2.2.1.2 -.

2.2.1.1 - Using the GUI to set the IP address

1. The IDU should be accessible from your PC. Connect an Ethernet cable between an IDU NMS port
to the Ethernet port of the PC. A network 'ping' can be done to verify connectivity to the IDU.
• On your desktop, click the Start button and select Programs. Then click on the MS-DOS Prompt
icon.
• In the MS-DOS window, type "ping 192.168.0.1" and press enter.
192.168.0.1 is the default factory IP address.
• If the ping is successful, it means that the IDU and the PC can communicate with one another
across an Ethernet connection. If the ping is not successful, check network connections
between the IDU and the PC.
• Close the MS-DOS prompt window.

2.3 - IDU SERVICE

At times, it may be necessary to service the IDU. This may include installing, removing, or replacing a
module. There may be up to 8 modules installed in a single chassis. Figure 2-1 shows the front panel of
the IDU with each module labeled. The basic procedure for removing and installing a module is
common to all the modules, with slight variations for the Power Supply Module, Controller Module, and
Mini IO Module. These basic procedures are described below. Variations are described in sub-items
beneath each step.

Page 28/120 SAGEM-LINK F-A Installation and Operation Manual – 253 230 884-A
COMMISSIONING CONFIGURATION AND TESTS

2.3.1 - Removing a Module

1. Modules are static sensitive and should only be handled in an ESD-safe environment. When
packaging modules for shipment or storage, place them in an ESD bag.
2. Remove front panel connections to the module.
3. Remove the two thumbscrews on either side of the module. Figure 2-2 shows the locations of
these thumb screws.
The thumbscrew for the Standard IO Module is located on the right side of the Mini IO Module slot.
If a Mini IO module is installed and the Standard IO Module is to be removed, both modules will be
removed as one unit.
When removing only the Mini IO card, remove the corner screw indicated in Figure 2-3 and one
thumb screw.
4. Thread thumbscrew(s) into hole(s) shown in Figure 2-2. Remove the module by grasping the
thumbscrew(s) and pulling module straight out of the IDU. Both thumbscrews should be used for all
modules except the Power Supply and the Mini IO Modules.
The Power Supply and Mini IO Modules have only one threaded hole each.
When removing the Standard IO Module, the ground lug indicated in Figure 2-3 is used as the
second threaded hole. If the IDU is to remain powered on and the ground lug is being used to
ground the unit, first move the ground connection to the ground lug located on the Controller
Module.

The IDU retains its current configuration when a module is removed, unless that module is the
Controller Module. In which case, the IP addresses will need to be reprogrammed.

2.3.2 - Installing a Module

1. Modules are static sensitive and should only be handled in an ESD-safe environment. When
packaging modules for shipment or storage, place them in an ESD bag.
2. Line up the module board with the guides in the chassis and slide the module into the IDU. As the
module face plate comes flush with the face of the IDU, connectors on the back of the module will
engage with the IDU backplane. It is possible to encounter interference from adjacent module front
panels. If this occurs, loosen the thumbscrews holding the neighbouring panels and shift them as
necessary to ensure fit.
The Mini IO Module only has one guide on the right side. Take care to insert the Mini IO module
carefully and correctly engage the rear connector with its mate on the Standard IO Module.
Install thumbscrews on either side of the module as shown in Figure 2-2.
The Mini IO card has a corner screw, which should be installed.
3. Make front panel connections to the module and power on the IDU if necessary.
4. Verify proper operation of the unit.
5. If the Controller Module has been changed, reprogram the IP addresses.

2.3.3 - Starting a GUI session

After checking IP connectivity, between the PC and the IDU (refer to section 2.2.1 -), start a GUI session by
opening a web browser (Internet Explorer or Firefox).

1. Enter the IDU IP address. Example: http://10.142.113.131

2. Enter the user name and the password in the popup window (refer to section 3.2 - for access rights
definition)
3. The following screen appears (example of an administrator level)

2.4 - LINK PRELIMINARY CONFIGURATION

2.4.1 - Setting the parameters of each IDU

The preliminary configuration of each IDU must be carried out separately at each end of the link. Once
the link is established, all the parameters can be checked from the local terminal.

The parameters of the local and remote terminals must be compatible. IP address of local IDU, remote
ID and PC Ethernet access must be in the same subnet.

Connect an Ethernet cable to the IDU local NMS Ethernet port and launch a web browser. Type the
local IDU address.

The first essential parameters to configure before establishing the link are for each IDU:

• Configuration (1+0, 1+1, Diversity, 2+0)

• IDU Operational mode
• ODU Transmit Power
• ODU Channel Selection
• Transmission Mode
• Automatic Transmit Power Control (APC) function must be disabled at this stage

Note: When the link is not established, an alarm is displayed, and the status panel looks as follows:

From the main screen go to the menu "Link Configuration/Radio Link/Link Configuration"

COMMISSIONING CONFIGURATION AND TESTS

The parameters of the local and remote terminals must be compatible. IP address of local IDU, remote
ID and PC Ethernet access must be in the same subnet.

If the antennas are properly aligned, and if the receive level is within the operating range, the link should
be established. The remote terminal parameters should appear on the right part of the screen.

If the configurations of both terminal are OK and if the receive level is not sufficient for the link to work,
it means that the antennas are not properly aligned. Use the procedure of the following section to align
the antennas.

COMMISSIONING CONFIGURATION AND TESTS

2.4.2 - Antenna alignment

Antenna alignment is performed with both terminals operating, in normal weather conditions. The
received signal level (RSL) can be checked using the voltage available on the ODU BNC
connector.

A typical curve of RSL voltage against RSL at ODU input is given below. The RSL voltage is
directly proportional to the RSL expressed in dBm.

Figure 2-4 - SAGEM-LINK F-A ODU RSL voltage

Note: RSL is measured at ODU antenna port. For 1+1 configurations involving a coupler, the
coupler losses must be taken into account to determine the RSL at antenna access.

Optimum alignment is achieved when main antenna lobe is aligned with the remote antenna.

During alignment, it is important to distinguish between the main lobe and the side lobes by rotating
the antenna around the maximum RSL value. Note that there is around 25 dB difference between
side lobes and main lobes (i.e. about 1.5 V on the RSL voltage).

Good alignment

SAGEM-LINK F-A Installation and Operation Manual – 253 230 884-A Page 37/120
COMMISSIONING CONFIGURATION AND TESTS

Bad alignment

Figure 2-5 - Antenna alignment

The expected RSL was determined during the link budget calculation. This level depends on the
power of the remote terminal, the frequency, the antennas gain and the hop length.
Antenna alignment is carried out on each antenna using the following procedure:

1- Check that the remote terminal transmitter is on, with the planned parameters (frequency,
power, speed, modulation). Check that the ACP is off and that the remote terminal power is
such that the RSL does not exceed –20 dBm.
2- Remove the cap on the ODU BNC connector and connect a voltmeter.
3- Slowly rotate the antenna in the azimuth direction (horizontal) and find the maximum voltage. If
the voltage is around 4.5 V, reduce the remote transmit power to avoid saturation.
4- Slowly rotate the antenna in the elevation direction (vertical) and find the maximum voltage.
Record the measured voltage.
5- When the maximum voltage has been found, tighten all the bolts. Check that the voltage has
not changed after tightening. Replace the protective cap on the BNC connector.
6- Compare the RSL obtained with the expected RSL. If the difference between the two values
exceeds 5 dB, readjust antenna alignment and polarization setting and check that there are no
obstacles on the radio path.

Note: There may still be some alarms at this stage. Refer to the troubleshooting chapter 4 to fix the
problems.
Note any discrepancies in the Commissioning Form at the end of chapter 2.

2.5 - TESTS AND MEASUREMENTS REQUIRED

After installing and setting the link, check correct operation by performing the following tests and
measurements:

• Received Signal Level

• STM-1 transmission test
• Ethernet Wayside access test (optional)
• Alarm In/Out test (optional)
• 1+1 switching check (optional)
• Residual BER measurement

Measurement equipment required:

• STM-1 Transmission Analyser

• Digital multimeter

Page 38/120 SAGEM-LINK F-A Installation and Operation Manual – 253 230 884-A
COMMISSIONING CONFIGURATION AND TESTS

A SAGEM-LINK F-A Commissioning Form is provided at the end of chapter 2 in order to record the
results of the tests carried out together with any remarks made during installation and commissioning.

2.5.1 - Receive signal level

Under normal weather conditions, the receive signal level depends on the following parameters:
• Remote Transmit Power (tolerance: ± 2 dB)
• Local and remote antenna gains (tolerance: ± 1 dB per antenna)
• Free space path attenuation depending on hop length and frequency
• Coupling and connection losses for a 1+1 system

Compare the actual received signal level displayed on the main screen of the GUI, with the expected
signal level:

The following tolerances must be taken into account:

• ± 2 dB for the transmit power
• ± 1 dB for the gain of each antenna
• ± 3 dB for the received level measurement displayed on the Pilot
• ± 0.5 dB for 1+1 coupler losses

We see that in the worst case, for a 1+0 type system, the maximum uncertainty is ±7 dB (±2 ±1 ±1 ± 3):
In practice, the typical uncertainty to be considered is ±5 dB.

So, if the difference between the receive level displayed by the GUI and the receive level expected by
the link budget calculation is within the tolerance ± 5 dB, the installation is considered to be correct.

A difference of more than ± 5 dB, however, indicates a problem such as incorrect antenna alignment, a
propagation problem or bad polarization on one of the two antennas.
First check the antenna alignment and polarization. If the problem remains, refer to the troubleshooting
guide in chapter 4, and replace the defective element.

Record the ODU RSL values of the link on the commissioning form.

2.5.2 - STM-1 transmission test

This test is carried out to check for correct transmission of STM-1 signals.
The test must be carried out on each port used.

It is used to test STM-1 transmission over the entire link.

A STM-1 transmission analyzer is required to take the measurement. The measurement block diagram
is given below. A loopback between transmit and receive STM-1 access (fiber or coaxial cable) shall be
made on the remote terminal.

SAGEM-LINK F-A Installation and Operation Manual – 253 230 884-A Page 39/120
COMMISSIONING CONFIGURATION AND TESTS

Loopback Tx/Rx

STM-1 BER Tester

In normal weather conditions, The test will be declared as positive if no errors appear during the time
measurement specified.

Note : if two STM-1 transmission analyzers are available, it is also possible to make the test in both
directions without the use of a loopback.

Record the test result on the commissioning form.

2.5.3 - Wayside 10/100 Ethernet Channel test (optional)

Depending on the configuration, one 10/100 Ethernet channel test could be activated. Note that the
connectors corresponding to this channel are labelled "USER 10/100". Port 1 or 2 could be used.

A 10/100BaseT Ethernet tester is required to perform this test. Make a physical loopback on the remote
terminal RJ45 access by connecting pins 1 and 3 together and 2 and 6 together.

The test consists in checking that the transmission has no losses on this access with a throughput of 1
Mbps.

Record the test result on the commissioning form.

2.5.4 - Alarm relay test (optional)

SAGEM-LINK F-A can manage 4 local external alarms and 4 remote external alarms (image of the
4 external alarms of the remote IDU).
If some external alarms are to be managed, it is necessary first to configure them (see
section 3.3.33 -).

Page 40/120 SAGEM-LINK F-A Installation and Operation Manual – 253 230 884-A
COMMISSIONING CONFIGURATION AND TESTS

Four alarm outputs are configurable. These four alarms are available with TTL interface. Two of them
(alarm 1 and alarm 2) can also be configured with two Form-C relay alarm outputs.

Use the menu Analysis/Alarms/Configuration to affect default to alarms.

The test consists to verify that alarms 1 to 4 work properly by simulating faults. You may remove cables,
or change external alarm input status to verify that alarm outputs are correct.

Record the test result on the commissioning form

2.5.5 - Testing 1+1 configuration (optional)

1+1 systems require additional tests compared with unprotected systems. These tests are carried out to
check that all parts are operational and that the switching system operates correctly.

These tests must be carried out on both ends of the link and require the presence of personnel in each
station.

In hot standby mode, only one transmitter is active, the other is muted. In frequency diversity mode, the
two transmitters operate permanently, transmitting at two different frequencies, and only the receivers
are switched.

The goal is to verify that each transmitter works correctly with the two remote receivers. For a hot stand
by system, proceed as follows.

1- Make a STM-1 test as described in section 2.5.2 -

2- Local ODU#1 ↔ remote ODU#1 : disconnect local ODU#2 cable and remote ODU#2 cable and verify
that STM-1 transmission is error free in both directions.

3- Local ODU #2 ↔ remote ODU#1 : disconnect local ODU#1 cable, connect local ODU#2 cable and
verify that STM-1 transmission is error free in both directions.

4- Remote ODU#2 ↔ local ODU#2 : disconnect remote ODU#1 cable and connect remote ODU#2
cable and verify that STM-1 transmission is error free in both directions.

5- Remote ODU #2 ↔ local ODU#1 : disconnect local ODU#2 cable and connect local ODU#1 cable
and verify that STM-1 transmission is error free in both directions.

6- Reconnect all ODU cables and record test results on the commissioning form.

Note : for a frequency diversity system, only local ODU#1 ↔ remote ODU#1 and local
ODU#2 ↔ remote ODU#2 tests are to be performed.

3.3.24 - Protection Configuration

User Access Level: Level 3

Description
This screen enables the user to configure the following protection parameters:

1. Power down ODU after switch – Select Enabled/Disabled. This option allows the user to
choose whether or not the ODU is powered down after a protection switch. A selection of
'Enabled' can be used for example to ensure that the ODU that had a fault does not transmit
outside of a licensed band. Additionally, if 'Enabled' is selected and a protection switch occurs,
the IDU will attempt to power up the ODU that had a fault automatically after 3 minutes (as
stand-by ODU). It will automatically power down the ODU that had a fault if an alarm condition
still exists.
2. Preferred ODU selection (only in Protected 1+1 operation) – Select East/ West. This option
allows a user to choose the preferred transmitting ODU that is to be enabled at start up. The
setting is used, for example, when a coupler is being used in the antenna configuration. If one
path in a coupler has less loss than the other path, it is typically set as the preferred.
3. APS Switch (Automatic Protection Switch) – Select Enabled/Disabled. This option allows the
user to enable or disable protection switching. Disabling this feature turns off the ODU Alarm,
ODU Hot-Swap and Remote Switching. Remote Switching has a separate user configurable
option for enabling and disabling.
4. Remote Transmitter Switching – Select Enabled/Disabled. Remote Transmitter Switching is
a method by which a 1+1 non-diversity protected link can try to recover from a one way lock
condition.
The algorithm is visually explained below in Figure 3-1. By enabling the feature, it allows a
near end IDU to monitor the Lock Status of the remote IDU. If a one way link occurs due to, for
example, a transmitter failure on the near side ODU that does not trigger an ODU alarm, the
far end Lock Status will become ’Unlocked’. The near end IDU will perform a protection switch
to try to recover by switching to the stand-by ODU.

SAGEM-LINK F-A Installation and Operation Manual – 253 230 884-A Page 65/120
USER INTERFACE DESCRIPTION

In other words, the near end ODU may have a transmitter failure, but no issue with its
receiver. In this case, it can still receive Lock Status information from the far side. The far side
can, in effect, tell the near side that it is no longer locked (not receiving a signal). The near
side will perform a protection switch based on this data if Remote Switching is enabled.
The switching takes place at the system software application level. This feature is not
designed as a fast protection switch but rather further redundancy to recover a link in a
situation in which the ODU cannot self detect a transmit alarm condition.

USER INTERFACE DESCRIPTION

Description
This screen is used to communicate with the MODEM directly by sending a command and receiving the
response. The following items are displayed:

1. East/West Enable/Disable – Select East Enable/East Disable West Enable/West Disable.

2. ‘Clear’ button – Send the ‘clear’ command to the MODEM.
3. Insert Bit Error - Select to insert a bit error.
4. Text Area – Displays the response messages from the MODEM.
5. Cumulative Bits - Total number of bits
6. Cumulative Bit Error - Total number of error bits
7. Bit Error Rate - Percentage of error bits

To use the BERT capabilities, the BERT mode has to be enabled independently at both ends of the link
because there is no separate NMS stream when operating in BERT mode. This will require the use of
two PCs, one connected directly to the NMS port of each IDU.

Proceed as follows:

To begin testing:

1. Navigate to Analysis/BERT Mode in the left panel.

2. Enable one of the IDU BERT modes
a. Click on one command (East Enable or West Enable).
b. After few seconds (depending on your network speed) the response from MODEM for
the given command will be displayed in the text area.
c. Enabling this mode will generate random data over the link causing the other IDU to
trigger the buzzer, generating noise.
3. Enable the other IDU BERT mode. This should silence the buzzer noise
4. Send the ‘Clear’ command to both IDU to reset the cumulative bits, cumulative bit errors, and
bit error rate counters

a. Click on the ‘Clear’ button.

b. After few seconds (depending on your network speed) the response from MODEM for
the given command will be displayed in the text area.
5. Every time the response message will be appended at the end, so using the scroll bar you can
see all messages
6. To insert an error and see whether the modem catches it, click on the ‘Insert Bit Error’ button

To stop testing:
1. Disable one of the IDU BERT mode.
a. Click on one command (East Disable or West Disable).
b. This will cause this IDU to generate buzzer noise.
2. Disable the other IDU BERT mode, this should silence the buzzer noise.

Number of Bits, Bit Errors, and BER will be accumulated until the BERTs are disabled, or the IDUs are
power cycled, which will clear the BERT mode.

Note
The MODEM may generate unsolicited messages without any command being sent from this screen.
These messages are also appended in the text area.

To copy & save the response messages:

1. Click inside the text area.
2. Press Ctrl+A and Ctrl+C.
3. Open notepad (or any text editor) and press Ctrl+V.
4. Save the file.

TROUBLESHOOTING

4. TROUBLESHOOTING

4.1 - INTRODUCTION
This chapter provides information on interpreting LED indicators, GUI screens and gives procedures for
unit replacement.

This chapter contains:

• Visual Inspection
• Troubleshooting Steps
• Alarms and Status Indication LED Description
• Typical GUI actions
• Replacing an ODU
• Replacing a module
• Replacing an IDU

Required test equipment

• Laptop Computer
• STM-1 Bit Error Rate Analyzer
• Digital voltmeter

4.2 - VISUAL INSPECTION

Before beginning any specific action on the SLF-A radio it is important to proceed to a visual inspection
and to note any discrepancy:

Visual Inspection Look for Actions

IDU to ODU Coaxial Cable Cracks, short circuits, moisture Clean or Repair
IDU and ODU Dust, Lightning Strike damages Clean or replace
Alarms (front panel and Pilot screen) All Green (except in 1+1 for the If red indicator, perform
standby modules) troubleshooting
Receive Signal Level (from Pilot Nominal value (installation data) Re align antenna, check remote
screen) terminal transmit power
DC Voltage Input Within specified range Replace power supply
Antenna mounting Tight mount Adjust

4.3 - TROUBLESHOOTING STEPS

The goal is to make a precise diagnostic of the problem, in order to determine the faulty unit, or to apply
corrective actions to avoid the problem to reappear.

4.3.1 - Define the symptom

This is generally made by the field technician: common symptoms are "the link is down", there are
excessive transmission errors", "there are alarms", …
These symptoms may be permanent (failure) or intermittent.

SAGEM-LINK F-A Installation and Operation Manual – 253 230 884-A Page 89/120
TROUBLESHOOTING

4.3.2 - Isolate the problem

Once the symptom has been defined, the faulty unit can be isolated using LED Indicators and GUI data.
SLF-A replacement units are the ODU, the IDU or modules.
The goal of this step is to determine what is the most probable unit to replace.

In some cases, the problem may be generated by the remote terminal, by external equipments (power
supply, bad interface signal levels…) or by the external environment (path obstruction, radio interferers,
severe climatic conditions…).

4.3.3 - Fix the problem

Once the problem has been isolated, it is important to understand the cause of the problem and to apply
corrective actions to avoid the problem to reappear.

TROUBLESHOOTING

4.4.1 - Direct and Indirect Alarms

There are two types of alarm:
• Direct alarms which occur when there is a fault on the unit (i.e. transmit frequency alarm)
• Indirect alarms caused by a failure from some other module, or by a missing unit or by a
propagation problem (RSL alarm, BER alarm, demodulation alarm….)

To determine the cause of an indirect alarm, it is necessary to analyze all possible causes which can
cause such an alarm, and to select the most probable.

4.5 - TYPICAL GUI SCREENS IN CASE OF PROBLEM

The following screens are representative to typical problems which could happen.

4.5.1 - Cannot access IDU using IP

• Verify the IP Address or Hostname of the IDU
• Determine if the terminal is up by pinging the IDU
• Check your PC’s Network Configuration
• Check Cables

4.5.2 - ODU is not properly connected

If one of the two ODUs of a 1+0 link is not connected, the following screens appear at each end of
the link:

SAGEM-LINK F-A Installation and Operation Manual – 253 230 884-A Page 99/120
TROUBLESHOOTING

Transmitter 'ERROR' is displayed on the local GUI screen, while remote ODU Transmitter is
'ACTIVE'

A red RSL alarm is displayed on the remote screen, while local screen has no RSL indication.

In this case, check cable between local IDU and ODU, and replace ODU if the problem persists.

4.5.3 - Link is broken

The local radio is operating, but there is no communication with the remote terminal: verify remote
terminal configuration, antenna alignment, radio path obstructions. A typical screen is given below:

4.5.4 - RSL Alarm

The link is established with a too low receive level causing RSL alarm. Check antenna alignment,
or a propagation problem.

TROUBLESHOOTING

4.6 - REPLACING AN ODU

To replace an ODU it is necessary to apply the following procedure:

1- Disconnect the ODU cable from the IDU

2- Note ODU polarization and remove ODU from its support (antenna, coupler or remote mount)
3- Install a new ODU according to installation procedure, in the same polarization.
4- Connect ODU cable and protect ODU connector with isolation tape
5- Connect the ODU cable to the IDU

4.7 - REPLACING A MODULE IN THE IDU

All IDU modules are hot swappable.
1- Disconnect all cables connected to the module
2- Remove the corresponding thumb screws from the chassis, and place them in the front panel
threaded holes of the module
3- Pull off the module
4- Replace it by a new one.
5- Attach the module with the thumb screws and connect the cable(s)
.

4.8 - REPLACING AN IDU

Use the installation procedure in chapter 1.

SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

5. SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

5.1 - INTRODUCTION
The SAGEM-LINK F range of microwave radio links provides highly reliable point to point
communication with low installation costs in different frequency bands. The SAGEM-LINK F-A is
dedicated to SDH transmission (1xSTM-1 or 2xSTM-1). This version uses the same ODUs than SLF
high capacity family (Gigabit Ethernet, Super PDH).

SAGEM-LINK F-A equipment is available in unprotected 1+0 configuration or in protected 1+1

configuration (hot standby, space diversity, frequency diversity).

The list of available IDUs is given in APPENDIX 2.

5.2.3 - IDU Modules

The list of IDU modules is given in APPENDIX 2.

5.2.4 - ODU Versions

SAGEM-LINK F-A equipment is available in frequency bands 6 GHz, 7 GHz, 8 GHz, 11 GHz, 13 GHz,
15 GHz, 18 GHz, 23 GHz, 26 GHz, 32 GHz and 38 GHz.
Each frequency band is divided into several sub-bands. For each sub-band, there is one Low Band
ODU and one high band ODU.
The complete list of ODUs is given in APPENDIX 2
The ODU minimum and maximum frequencies indicated in this list correspond to the diplexer useful
bandwidth.
The minimum and maximum channel frequencies depend on the channel occupied bandwidth and
therefore on the capacity and the modulation used.

5.3 - SAGEM-LINK F-A FEATURES

5.3.1 - SAGEM-LINK F-A Block Diagram

The block diagram of a SAGEM-LINK F-A in 1+0 Configuration is given in Figure 5-4.

5.3.1.1 - IDU features

The IDU major functions can be summarized as follows:

• I/O Processing –1xSTM-1, or 2xSTM-1 capacities can be proposed, if 1xSTM-1 module, or

2xSTM-1 card are installed
• Switch/Framing - The IDU includes an Ethernet Switch and a proprietary Framer that are
designed to support 1+1 protection switching, ring architecture routing, and overall network
control functions.
• Network Processor – The SLF-A IDU includes a Network Processor which performs SNMP
and Network Management functions

SAGEM-LINK F-A Installation and Operation Manual – 253 230 884-A Page 105/120
SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

• Modem/IF - The SLF-A Modem performs forward-error-correction (FEC) encoding, PSK/QAM

modulation and demodulation, equalization, and FEC decoding functions. The IF chain provides
a 350 MHz carrier and receives a 140 MHz carrier. The multiplexer function is built into an
appliqué that resides in the Modem/IF Module. Two modems can be used for 1+1 protection or
ring architectures
• Power Supply - The IDU power supply accepts -48 Vdc and supplies the IDU and ODU with
power. A second redundant power supply may be added as an optional module

The block diagram of the SAGEM-LINK F-A in 1+0 configuration is given below. In 1+1 configuration,
power supply module, modem, and ODU are redunded.

The 1+1 HSB configuration involves the following principles:

• The main and standby ODU operate at the same frequency and are connected to a single
antenna with a coupler (6 dB or 3 dB coupling),
• When one transmitter is in traffic, the other is in mute position,
• Both receivers are operational,
• Transmitter and receiver switch controls are independent.
• The transmitter and receiver switches are controlled by the local terminal information. In normal
operation, the remote terminal does not control the local terminal switch.
• Manual switching (forcing) is available via the Pilot software
• The receiver switch has a hitless feature: error-free switching under some conditions.

Note 1: the minimum and maximum frequencies in these tables correspond to the ODU diplexer bandwidth
transmission side, not channel frequencies. The channel frequencies available depend on the selected channel
occupied bandwidth.
The frequency of the first channel is equal to the minimum diplexer frequency + half the band corresponding to
the transmitted spectrum. The frequency of the last channel is equal to the maximum diplexer frequency - half
the band corresponding to the transmitted spectrum.

The band corresponding to the transmitted spectrum is 40 MHz for a 56 MHz Tx/Tx spacing, 20 MHz for a 28
MHz Tx/Tx spacing (see also section 5.2.4 -).
