CASE STUDY

Best Press Ltd. is a leading publishing house in Takoradi. It is situated about three
hundred metres from the Airport Roundabout. After almost two years of operation it is
now attracting clients throughout the country. Mr. Bonaventure has served in three
leading publishing house Within the West African Sub-region, he is seeking to make this
publishing house the best in the region.
The staff and employees of this publishing house are recruited locally. Since most of them
do not possess the experience of working in leading publishing houses, they lack the
attitudes and skills to deal with the company’s clients. The Supervisory staff, however,
are qualified with university degrees in publishing and have undergone periods of
practical training in the print business in other leading publishing companies in the
country before their engagement by Best Press. The supervisors have discovered that
assistants in the various departments do not have any formal training in the printing and
publishing profession. It was therefore difficult for the supervisor to issue out instructions
to them. The employees and staff did not rise to the standards expected of them by their
clients who kept comparing their services to other leading publishing houses within the
region. In recent times, lots of complaints have come with reference to proof reading,
quality of print, color separation and collation of pages.
In response Mr. Bonaventure has called several meetings with heads of departments and
their supervisors. A formal training programme has been recommended for the
employees of the organization. However, the supervisory staff do not wish to relieve the
staff during working hours and the staff are equally not willing to attend training
programmes after working hours.

methodology, resource persons and a formal appraisal method to evaluate the overall
