Introduction
- The development of the activity

Whereas the previous year was marked with a

slow progression due to various factors, in 2022-
2023 Alliance française de Lucknow has known a
real growth in its different activities. Through the + 520 students
implementation of different tools and processes
but also thanks to a young and dynamic image, + 110 certifications
the smallest Alliance of India has succeded in
attracting new students and opening a successful
certification centre habilitated by the French
Embassy in India.
- Creating bound between France and UP

As many person throughout the state are

interested in French culture and opportunities with
+ 2700 participants French speaking countries, many cultural projects
were organised during the year, in Lucknow and in
to the cultural events UP. With the support of the French Embassy in
India, these events always attracted impressive
crowds and were often the spark for debates and
discussion between the participants.
- A financial stability

Thanks to the work of its entire team, and the

diversification of its activities, Alliance française de
Lucknow was able to overcome its previous issues
and start being autonomous on financial level.
With a very good implantation in the city, Alliance + Rs. 18 lakh benefits
française de Lucknow has started operating with
different educational institutions of the city and
will continue to reach out to share interest in
language and culture.

General Administration
Governance and management
Alliance française de Lucknow, as other
organisation alike in India and in the world, is
goverened by an Executive Committee elected
from the General Body of the members. The
year 2022-23 has seen the tenue of a General
Assembly Meeting on March 3rd 2023 where
elections were held for the third time since the
opening of Alliance française de Lucknow in
2016.
At the occasion of this democratic process,
the founder president of Alliance française
de Lucknow, Mrs. Zohra Chatterji completed
her third and last term of two years and a new
Executive Committee was elected. This 4th
Executive Committee of Alliance française de
Lucknow was made from 11 members chosen
from the general body which elected by a very
large majority a new president in the person
of Prof. Nishi Pandey. Among the new office
bearers, we can also count Mrs. Aashrita Dass
as Vice-President, Mr. Prateek Hira as Secretary
General, Mrs. Kavita Dass as Secretary & Mr.
Arvind Narain Mishra as Treasurer.
During the first Executive Committee Meeting,
Mrs. Alice Gauny, Coordinator of the 15
Alliances françaises in India was present and
pronounced a speech aiming to congratulate
the newly elected Executive Committee of
Alliance française de Lucknow and to present
the frame of work in the network of Alliances
française in India.

Alliance française de Lucknow is still
operating from its premises of La Martinière
Girls’ College, from a 3 rooms building which
contains one office space and two classroom.
Thanks to the help of the French Embassy in
India which donated a books and funded the
building of shelves and furnitures, one of the
rooms has been transformed into a library
and multimodal space which is used by the
students and team for various purpose.
Office computers and communication
devices such as good quality smartphone and
video stabiliser were also sent by the French
Embassy in India in the frame of a plan for
improving the communication possibilities of
the different Alliances françaises. Thanks to
this help, it has been possible for the team to
take and edit some good quality videos and
improve the presence of the organisation on
social medias.
Team
While Alliance française de Lucknow had
been operating with a limited workforce for
the past years, in 2022-23 new persons came
to help the organisation to operate and fulfill
its different missions.
Along with an expatriated Director sent
by the French Embassy in India since 2021
and an Administrator working in Alliance

française for the past three years, two French
Volunteers in Service Civique came to operate
as Cultural Coordinator and Pedagogical
projects manager. Many tasks of the Course
Coordination were taken by one certified and
experienced teacher of Alliance française de
Lucknow.
Some teachers were also recruited to face the
growing activity. Whereas the inside courses
were taken by two certified teachers, the off site
courses have been entrusted to four Teachers
under training which benefits of the regular help
of the Course Coordinator and the Pedagogical
Project Manager.
With the budding activity of the structure, some
of the tasks which are operated by different
members of the team will soon have to be
entrusted to some full or part time professionals.
Finances
Overall after some difficult time in the two
previous Fiscal Years, the results of 2022-
2023 were really excellent and its income
went higher than the best year of Alliance
française so far (2018-2019).
Funding
Most of the funds of Alliance française de
Lucknow are coming from the sale of French
Courses indoor (to adults students who
enrolled directly) and outdoor (to schools
desiring to propose French Courses to their
students with the help of Alliance française).
Since the accreditation of Alliance française
as an official center for Certification in Uttar
Pradesh, Alliance française is able to propose
the DELF Certification which is starting to be
very interesting. Their revenue have almost
been 25% of the Income for the FY 2022-
2023.

For the past year, the French Embassy in India has
been supporting most of the Cultural projects
that happened in Lucknow as well and they
posted the director of Alliance française in India.
They also provided a funding for the building
of the library of Alliance française de Lucknow
and sent books, saving the organisation some
important expenditures in these fields.
FCRA Account
Alliance française was able to open a prior
permission FCRA Account in 2019. With the
last funding from the French Embassy received
in June 2022, the limit set during the granting
of this Prior permission has now been entirely
exhausted.
A demand for a complete registration of the
FCRA Account has been demanded in 2020
and is still pending despite repeated demands
for updates. Documents demanded were
submitted in the beginning of 2022 but without
news since.
While the majority of Alliances françaises in
India have been granted the possibility to
receive such funding from organisations located
outside India, it is now very important that
Alliance française de Lucknow get registred as
well. Being able to apply for grants coming from
different French, Canadian or Swiss organisation
would definitely permit Alliance française
de Lucknow to work more efficiently and to
get help for accomplishing the object of the
society by working with education and cultural
organisations in and outside of the country.
Payments abroad
With more activity, Alliance française de
Lucknow has been able to expand its activities
and adding new products.
Among them, we can cite new courses, especially
towards highest levels with the addition of new
Teachers but also the possibility for Alliance
française de Lucknow to be accredited as a TEF
Certification center.
This new Certication, which is often demanded to
acquire a Canadian Visa, is provided by a French
Organisation called « Chambre du commerce et
de l’industrie de Paris- Ile de France ». This
TEF is sold by all the Alliances françaises in
India at the rate of Rs. 24,899/- and on that
amount, 100 € needs to be sent back to the
“CCI Paris IDF”. As of now, no international
transfer had yet been necessary from
Alliance française de Lucknow so the
protocole was unclear to the Administration
of AfL. As these international transfer are
now going to occur on regular basis for
different products and tools, it is essential
that the procedure is going smoothly.
After more than a year of procedures, the
Director of Alliance française de Lucknow
have finally been added as a signatory for
the operation of our saving account located
in ICICI Bank. This allows him to operate our
general accounts and to sign cheques when
the need occurs, in compliance with the
Rules and Regulations of Alliance française
de Lucknow
Interim audit
In January 2023, a few weeks before leaving
office, the Members of the 3rd Executive
Committee of Alliance française de
Lucknow have demanded that an Interim
Audit was conducted by the appointed
Chartered Accountant of Alliance française
de Lucknow. This audit reviewed the
different operations from April 1st 2022
to December 31st 2022 and found that
nothing illegal or abnormal was done during
that time. The auditors even congratulated
the team of Alliance francaise for the good
keeping of their book and clarity of their
operations.
Results of the year
Alliance française de Lucknow best results
until date was the year of 2018-19 with a
total income of a bit more than 31 lakh. The
FY 2022-23 has overcome this already
excellent results with a total income of Rs.
45 lakh, for an expenditure of Rs. 33 lakh.
Hence a positive balance of almost 18 lakh
rupees
Although these results are very pleasants,

it is important to note that the budget for this FY,
voted on March 2022, was only of 26 lakh. Even if
the balance is much more positive, it is important
to use the results obtained this year in order to
make better and more accurate previsions for the
FY 2023-2024.
it is important to mention that this year, we
have received a great lot of help from the
French Embassy in India for organisation
of cultural projects, and especially for all
the projects that happened during Bonjour
India festival.

For the FY 22-23, 65% of Alliance française de
Lucknow revenue came from the selling of French
courses, 25% from certifications (DELF & TEF) and
the other 10% are coming from Membership fees,
sale of pedagogical books, translation services
and other donations.
Since Alliance française is now starting to
be a bit more profitable, the share for the
cultural project is likely to expand in our next
results.

As per our expenditure, 27% are the salaries of the

teachers, 20% are salaries of the team of Alliance
française, 16% for the global functioning of
Alliance française, 29% are different taxes and the
rest goes in transports, communication fees and
different cultural projects fees. For this last point,

 Academic results
Organisation of the courses
If 2021-2022 was still functioning with the course
organisation dated from the beginning of Alliance
française de Lucknow, since March 2022, the
classes of Alliance française have started to operate
according to the same organisation as in other
Alliance françaises. Hence a student now enrols
for an entire level (A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 or C2) and not
only for a part of it only (B1.1 or A1.4 for example).
The counting and comparison of students is also
facilitated thanks to this organisation.
These books are designed for adults but
Hachette edition proposes also other
pedagogical methods specifically designed
for younger publics. Hence the network of
Alliance française in India proposes the
sets of books “Adomania”, “Sesame” and
“Loutics” for the adolescend, children and
young children French courses. Less sold
than the books Cosmopolite, they are
unfortunately more expensive and this
excessive price has been a problem when
coming to outdoor courses, since many
schools children parents could not afford
the proposed book price.

For the outdoor courses, Alliance française de If Alliance françaises has for now enforced

Course method
As in all Alliances françaises in India and many other
in the world, the center of Lucknow works with
the pedagogical book “Cosmopolite” (Hachette
editions) which comes with a different set of 2
books for each linguistic level (Cosmopolite 1 is for
level A1, 2 is for level A2, etc.).

Results
With 17 batches open since April 1st 2022,
Alliance française de Lucknow has gathered 120
students in its indoor courses, online and offline.
Most of them are adults (79%) with 4 batches
dedicated to junior students. For a total of 2214
hours taught total (the double of 2021-22).
For our outdoor courses, we had the chance
to start working with three renown schools of
the city from the month of April 2022: Modern
School Lucknow, Tender Heart School and
City Montessori School Gomti Nagar I. These
different partnerships, brought a total of 415
students which learnt French from the teachers
of Alliance française throughout the year, for a
total of 459 hours taught during the SY 2022-
2023.

Certifications
DELF-DALF
In 2021, because of the appointment of a new
Director experienced in managing a certification
centre, Alliance française de lucknow was granted
the possibility to open a DELF & DALF centre in
Lucknow, which is now the only accredited centre
in Uttar Pradesh for French Language.
Thanks to the help of the French Enbassy in India,
3 teachers were habilitated during a training in
Jaipur in Novembre 2022 to be DELF examiners
up to A2 level, completing the team of examiners
in Lucknow which now counts a total of 7 upto date
examiners in the city. As in December 2022, the
pedagogical coordinator and director of Alliancer
frnannçaise were successfully habilitated to be
examiners up to level C2, Alliance française de
Lucknow is now able to propose DALF C1 & C2
examinations.
Thanks to good relationship with the different
universities of the states, we receive many
students from Benarès, Kanpur, Agra and other
cities, willing to get their linguistic skills certified.
The DELF A2 of March 2023
To be noted that this certification is managed
by the French Embassy in India which is
deciding of the price for the entire year and
controlling the good organisation of each
session. For the year 2022-23, Alliance
française de Lucknow has organised 7
DELF Sessions (3 juniors and 4 adults). As in
September 2022 the Director of AfL, which
is also responsible for the session was not
present, the Deputy Director of Alliance
française de Bombay came to Lucknow to
organise it.
Also, as it is not possible for a teacher
to examin his own students, nor for a
teacher to examin a colleague, some of the
examination still have to be outsourced to
examiners from other Alliances françaises.
To avoid these situations which are often
more costly, it is important to continue
to train teachers of Alliance française de
Lucknow and of UP.
These good results are to continue and
it is very important to keep encouraging
students in Schools and Universities to
pass the DELF certification, since it is a life
long official diploma which really attest
of the linguistic skills of the students. The
same goes for the training of teachers and
volunteers of Alliance française de lucknow
to be examiners for our upcoming sessions
of DELF & DALF.

TEF
In December 2021, Alliance française also got
accredited to be a TEF Certification centre. This
certification;, only valid for 2 years, unlike the
DELF which is valid for life, is the one demanded
by the government of Canada to get a Canadian
Employement or Student visa.
This very interesting product is also possible
because the Director and Pedagogical
Coordinator are both Certified examiners from
the CCI – Paris IDF (the organism which delivers
it). Very often, students willing to go to Canada
are coming to Alliance française de Lucknow
to pass it, often from Delhi or even Pendjab or
Gujarat.
It is important to continue to communicate
over this impactful certification which is very
demanded throughout India and very profitable
for Alliance françaises.
Over all, it is 90 different certifications which
were proposed in Alliance française de Lucknow
in 2022-23. For comparison, in 2021-22, only
22 were proposed, only because the national
responsible for DELF came from Delhi to
Lucknow with a team of examiners. It is really
entusiastic that Alliance française de Lucknow is
autonomous as an examination centre.
The library of Alliance française de Lucknow
Library
One of the major changes of this year
was the opening of the Library of Alliance
française de Lucknow. While one of the 3
rooms of the organisation was not used a lot,
it was decided to change the organisation
of the space and to turn this room into a
multimodal space which would include a big
working space, some seaters and a library.
While Alliance française de Lucknow already
disposed of books acquired thanks to many
donations received since the opening in
2016, it did not dispose of enough space to
store them and many of them were kept in
cartons.
With the help of the French Embassy in India

also received many Juniors Books which are

This library Room is now used on a daily
basis by the team of Alliance française as
a teaching and meeting space, while the
students come there very often to read
books and work on different projects.

In 2022-2023, a lot of beautiful projects took
place in Alliance française de Lucknow,bringing
fame to the young organisation and helping it
having an attractive image in the city and the

In April 2022, the frame of the Bonjour India
festival and on a proposal of Alliance française
de Bhopal, a nationwide festival of Wall Art
was organised in India and Lucknow had the
chance to welcome the Artist Lili Totas, an
impressive Lyon-based artist working a lot on
political subjects. Initially scheduled to paint
an immense frescoe on one of the walls of
Lucknow University, she was finally invited to The concert of Electrik Pô in front of La Martinière Collège

French Cuisine is widely known in the entire
world and being the Alliance française of a
city famous for its food, gave the opportunity
to create an event around cooking. With
the participation of the cuisine department
of Isabella Thoburn College, the volunteers
of Alliance française have trained over 55
students to cook 3 different cakes in this first
edition of the event “ C’est du gateau” (literally
“it is a piece of cake”, in French).

Francophonie Day 2023
As in the entire world, the last week of March
is very important to all Alliances françaises
because it is the Francophonie Month and
the 20th of March, is the Francophonie Day.
Hence, Alliance française de Lucknow really
wanted to organise a big event which would
gather all the French learners and speakers of
the city. The time of an afternoon, the campus
of La Martinière Girls’ College has welcomed
many different schools from the city for a very
nice time with interschools competitions in
poetry, recitation and singing all in French. A
costume competition was also well followed
and the 500 students that participated were
all very thrilled to see this beautiful ambiance
and to practice their French together in a jolly
ambiance.

Results
The year 2022-2023 brought an impressive
variety of new cultural events to Alliance
française de Lucknow. Whether it was
oriented toward the French learners as the
different Café Conversation or the general
people interested in films as in the “Café
Cinémas”, art as in the “Wall Art festival”,
the discussions as in the “Night of Ideas”
or even the food lovers as in the “C’est du
Gateau”, all these new events contributed
in bringing Indian and French cultures a bit
closer, raising awareness to thousands of
person throughout the state and bringing
fame to Alliance française de Lucknow and
its activities.

Communication
Since they are the most likely to enrol to the
French Classes, the core target of an Alliance
française, everywhere in the world, is young
people from the age of 15 to 35 years old. Hence,
Alliance française de Lucknow decided to
orient an important part of its communication
tools toward platforms which are widely used
by the Youth of Lucknow and UP.
Most of the event and activities saw the
creation of original posters which could be
shared by WhatsApp and give a real image to
all events.
Online presence
With the raise of different videos and images
contents on the internet, it is essential to
have an important presence online and to
experiment new contents which can be widely
shared online. Thanks to the French Embassy in
India, Alliance française de Lucknow received
some materiel for the realisation of different
videos and is able to experiment widely with
the creation of medias and contents.
While 2021-2022 saw the creation of the
website of Alliance française de Lucknow, an
important focus was made toward new social
medias, to broaden the connexion of Alliance
française de Lucknow with the young people
of UP which use these different tools with a
certain expertise.
Facebook
While all the actualities of the cultural events,
courses and certifications of the structures
were systematically displayed as posts on
the Facebook page of Alliance française de
Lucknow, one of the main changes has been
the important creation of stories. These time
limited shortpublications are widely followed
and an average of 250 people are watching
the all the stories published since November
2022. With these different stories came a
lot of new followers for the page of Alliance
française which increased of 35% going from
980 followers to 1520 in only a few months.
Instagram
Equally important because used by a lot
of young people in India, Instagram is also
a platform which is to be used a lot for the
promotion of Alliance française contents.
While all the stories are published equaly on
FB and Instagram, we are trying to re-shape
the type of content which is posted on the
main page in order to have something more
worked on with real texts able to capture
the interest of the audience on different
cultural points and activities of Alliance
française.
Youtube
Although working with video demands
a lot of skills and technique to produce
professional contents, it is nowadays a must
for the publication of every organisation
wishing to have an online presence. Hence,
Alliance française de Lucknow is trying
its best to capture videos of every event
organized and edit a small post video which
is going to be published on the Youtube
Channel as well as on the facebook posts.
For that, it can rely on the material which
have been sent by the French Embassy in
India in the month of December 2022. With
a good quality cellphone and a gimbal,
it is now equipped to capture steady
shots which can give our videos a more
professional look.

Raising platform in India, it is already widely
used on other continents by a lot of different
publics, often young, and allow the live
streaming and watching of many type of
contents. Alliance française de Lucknow has
been the first Alliance in the world to open a
Twitch channel on which it has streamed a few
cultural events and will continue to experiment
with this new platform to share ideas and
content to a broad public.

Created in 2021, the website of Alliance
française de Lucknow is more a landing page
on which the public can find the general
information and contacts of the organisation.
With the development of communication
tools throughout the Indian network of
Alliances françaises, and thanks to the French
Embassy in India, a new template of website is
soon going to be implemented in all Alliances
françaises, including Lucknow.
Physical tools
This year a certain amount of physical tools
were created with posters for a few events
(Francophonie, C’est du gateau, etc.) but also
some communication tools like some T-shirts
which were gifted during the francophonie or
postcards & general brochures .
But the best tool for the communication of
Alliance française de Lucknow is definitely the
motorcycle which was painted and labelled
to the colours of Alliance français and has a
lot of success in the city.
Even if this communication massive
improvement is not immediately reflecting
on the numbers of students, it is important
to note that it is a long process which is to
be seen in a wider time. Most of the person
which will see our online advertisement or
read our brochures or participate to our
events are maybe not going to register
immediately but knowing that an active
Alliance française is present in the city will
definitely help them to start their journey
with the language when they will feel the
need or the will to learn.
Human ressources
As most organisation, the HR is an
important part of the process and if
Alliance française de Lucknow is not yet a
completely organised Alliance française,
with one person occupying each pole, this
last year saw a lot of improvements with
some new additions to the team.
Administrative team
As before, the administrative team of
Alliance française is done from the Director,
expat from the French Ministry of foreign
affairs and an Administrator helped by an
accountant.
Pedagogical department
Alliance française de Lucknow has grew
during the last year with the addition of 3
different certified teachers and 3 teachers
under training. For the time being, one
native and graduated teacher is doing the
coordination of this pedagogical team in
parallel to her teaching hours, but it would
be healthy for the organisation to start
remunerating someone part or full time to
take care of these missions of pedagogical
coordination.

Alliance française de Lucknow has been
accredited as an official translation centre by
the French Embassy in India and many persons

an important succès and the city possess some
impressive equipments that could be used for
the organisation of quality cultural programs.

Conclusion
Alliance française de Lucknow was able in a
short time to develop its different activities
and to get known as a real language and
cultural centre in Lucknow and in Uttar
Pradesh.
Over all, 2022-23 was a very positive year
with a lot of activity from all the departments
of Alliance française de Lucknow. Thanks to
a very good team work, the courses numbers
have really improved with 521 students
enroled indoor and outdoor, the certifications
were multiplied by 4 since the previous year
and the organiation was able to achieve
financal stability while the previous year was
far from beneficial.
Thanks to these good results, a lot of cultural
programs were implemented in the city and
the state, with inclusive events on various
thematics, which were always really well
received from the different partners where
they were organised.
It will soon become important for the
development of the organisation that
Alliance française de Lucknow can dispose
of professionals to take care of the different
missions (Front Desk, Cultural Coordination,
Pedagogical Coordination in priority)which
are assumed for now by other members of
the team, in parralel to their own missions.
Fortunately, Alliance française de Lucknow
has the possibility to have access to various
French Volunteering & Internships to help
in the accomplishement of its different aims
and benefits from a dynamic and tech savy
team to do a lot of experimentations.
