Goal: Your task is to write a film review for The Giver, showing your understanding of
filmmaking techniques and the language of film, as well as your ability to express
your opinion, backed up with evidence.
Role: You are a student writer, writing a film review for the 7 Days newsletter. You will
need to use strong writing skills to share your knowledge about filmmaking
techniques and how they are used in the movie The Giver, as well as express your
opinion about the movie.
Audience: Your audience members are readers – students, staff, and parents – of 7 Days.
As a student writer, you will interact with your audience using the written text
type of ‘film review’.
Situation: You are a member of the StGIS Movie Club. The club regularly writes film reviews
for the 7 Days newsletter. This week, it is your turn! As the club spends a lot of
time discussing the creative elements of the movies it watches, you will be sure
to talk about (at least) a couple of filmmaking techniques, such as the camera
work and use of sound in The Giver. You can also mention other elements such
as acting, setting, and mise-en-scéne, etc.
Standard: We will grade your work based on your ability to analyse the film, to
organise your ideas, and to write in English. We use the table below to
figure out what you must improve (GROW) and what you did well (GLOW).
Name:
Criterion A: Analysing
You show some analysis of the film’s techniques and styles.
You show some understanding of the effects of the creators’ choices of
filmmaking techniques on a film audience.
You select some relevant details and examples to justify your opinion and
ideas, but you could do this more consistently; you use some film
language.
Criterion B: Organising
Your work shows that you have attempted to use PEE paragraph
structures that follow a film review format, but you do not consistently
follow the expected layout either within each paragraph and/or within
the whole review.
You organize your opinions and ideas with some clarity and flow of logic
but you could do this more consistently.
