Self-Critique Assignment: 10% | Improved Presentation: 10%

Date Assigned: Week 7

Submit video/TikTok presentation by: Week 8 (end of week)
Self-Critique Date Due: Week 9
Rationale for Assignment
The best public speakers are highly self-reflective about their skills. Self-critiques are
designed to help you identify your strengths and weaknesses. Honestly analyze your
speech.

By writing self-critiques, students should refine their abilities to:

ü Critically analyze all aspects of speech composition
ü Critically analyze all aspects of speech delivery
ü Distinguish between weak and strong support
ü Identify unclear speech arrangement and identify possible solutions
ü Diagnose your delivery problems and propose remedies

Description & Instructions

Part 1 – Video
You will present a two-minute speech. You will record a video of yourself delivering a
speech. You can use Tik Tok or record the clip on a device for this presentation.
o You will submit your video before the end of Week 8 – Include your name and
student number in the video description
o Submit your video in the submission portal
Recording your video
o Tik Tok - set the video to private so no one else can see it. Once done,
download and save it on your device as a video. Share that video with your
professor via BB
o Video file – Record and upload a video file from a device

Part 2 – Self-Critique Assignment

After reviewing your speech video you will critique yourself.
A guide for your reflection has been provided below:

• Your self-critique should be a reflection and detailed plan for improvement

• Write a 1 to 1½ page double-spaced (600-800 words) paper that critiques your
video speech quality, structure, and delivery

Continues below…
As you view your video and write your self-critique, you should address the
following questions:
o What do you think you did well?
o What didn’t go as well as you had planned?
o What will you do differently the next time you give a speech?
o What did you like most and least about your physical performance?
o What did you like most and least about your verbal delivery?
o Describe your satisfaction level with the structure, evidence and your argument.
o Was your point of view supported sufficiently to make a compelling argument? If
so, describe why? If not, what more could you say? If you say that you needed
more evidence, discuss a point that lacked sufficient evidence.
o Did you have good transitions? Provide an example of where you had a good
transition.

Part 3 – Improved Presentation

After completing your Self-Critique Assignment, use your reflections to present an
improved version of your presentation, in class during Week

Submission and Format

• You will submit an electronic copy of your written self-critique on Blackboard - Do
not email the assignment – assignments will only be accepted if delivered
through the assignment submission portal
• Don’t forget to complete the student self-assessment (highlight or circle)
• Format:
- Include a cover page – review format detailed in program handbook
- The assignment should be typed, double-spaced, 12-point font size and use a
legible font; include word count and page numbers
- Reflection should be written in paragraph format (not a bullet point response)

When to view your video

- You should plan to view your video one or two days after recording
- To be more objective, allow a break between the time you record yourself,
and the time you begin writing your critique

What to critique
- A speech is between you and the audience. Non-verbal cues and physical
behaviors are important, but are only one part of the much larger
communication transaction
- Think about how you are explaining your evidence to the audience, and the
arrangement of your speech
- You should analyze your speech; do not simply write a single sentence
observation about each aspect of your speech. This is a unique
opportunity to see your speech as others saw it.
- Don’t be too hard on yourself, but view this as another step in your
ongoing improvement as a speaker
