Read articles on Ebscohost or Google Scholar pertaining to word recognition and
intervention strategies for learners with word recognition challenges.

Read through the Assessment Guide instructions and ensure that you understand
all the elements of the assignment for Part A and B.

Read through the assessment rubric to know what is expected from you.
PART A
Have you summarised the important role of word recognition in assisting Foundation Phase learners to read with
understanding and fluency, AND summarised the strategies the teacher will use to support learners who have poor word
recognition skills. Have you written a draft essay of 1000 – 1200 words. Does it include:

Analyse and summarise the word recognition challenges that Samuel is experiencing. Refer to pages 55, 65 and 66
in ‘The Stuggling reader’. Identify the level of reading development that Samuel is currently at. Refer to Samuel’s
specific challenges as indicated in the case study. Ensure that you include the following:
 Discussion of the reading development stage that Samuel is currently at.
 Discussion of five appropriate activities that will develop Samuel’s letter-sound
relationship skills.
 Examples of the tools (checklists, flashcards, picture cards) you will use during each
activity.
 List references which show evidence of Stadio referencing techniques.
