NST301 Unit 4 – Lesson 2

UNDERSTANDING TECHNOLOGY KNOWLEDGE

Upcoming Online Assessments

Next Class task – Glossary.

• You are required to add a key term relating to Understanding Technology Knowledge
• A definition for the term technology has been provided. Please use this as an example
and add a definition for a new term relevant to Unit 4. The follow criteria apply:
i. Your term has to be ONE WORD
ii. Your term has to be relevant to Unit 4 content: Understanding Technology Knowledge
iii. Your term has to be spelt correctly
iv. Your definition for the term has to be correct
v. Ensure that you DO NOT provide a definition for a term that a fellow student has already
done

• Please note that if all the above criteria are fulfilled, you will be awarded a mark for
participation in this activity. This mark will count towards your Class Task mark.
Upcoming Online Assessments

Online Test 2
• DATE : 18 June 2020
• NUMBER OF ATTEMPTS: One
• STUDY UNITS : 4 and 5
• TOTAL: TBC
• TIME: TBC
Materials

• Exploring materials and products provides opportunities for learners to

increase their understanding of technology.
• In doing technology activities, learners are:
1. exploring materials,
2. finding ways to identify common materials,
3. gaining knowledge about a range of materials and their different uses
• Learners must learn to sort & identify materials by their simple properties
Products and Application

• Learners should be given the opportunity to investigate how toys,

classroom objects and safe household items have been made, assembled
and finished to make them suitable for their purpose.
Basic Operations

• Includes the basics of using technological tools.

• Learners need to understand the following concepts about tools &
machines:
1. There are many different kinds & have many different jobs
2. Used to accomplish tasks more easily & quickly
3. Cannot work by themselves
4. Used in a variety of places
Processing

• Takes place when learners use raw materials and combine and mix it to
create new products.
1. Food – Whenever you design & make things to eat, you are involved in food
technology and are responsible for ensuring that the food is safe to eat,
nutritious, of a high quality, and, appetising. Food technology is also about
the science behind storing, cooking, processing and presenting food.
2. Textiles – explored when learners use elementary sewing skills to make
simple things.
3. Other forms of processing
Systems

• Learners encounter the concept of simple machines called mechanisms:

• A mechanismis any device that makes people’s work easier by controlling
movement and force
• Has an input and an output
• Work refers to a force that is applied to move something.
• Six different types of simple machines:
1. WEDGE
2. INCLINED PLANE (RAMP)
3. SCREW
4. LEVER
5. PULLEY
6. WHEEL & AXLE
Types of movements

• Linear
• Reciprocal
• Oscillating
• Rotary movement

Structures in Technology

• Structures are all around us, natural or constructed

• Designed to do particular job
• Can be defined as anything that supports a load
• Can enclose a space therefore offering protection

Forces acting on structures

• Compression = pushing force, e.g. books on a shelf

• Tension = pulling force, e.g. trampoline pushing on springs

• Torsion = twisting force, e.g. turning a tap
• Bending = bending force, e.g. heavy weight on a shelf
• Shearing = tearing force, e.g. a hook breaks if weight is too heavy
