Instructions for Creative Project (15%)

Overview
You will either work individually or in groups of up to four people. You are content creators on a video based social media
platform (e.g. TikTok or YouTube). You must choose a global issue as well as a primary source to which you will respond. This
primary source could be a film, a TV series, an article, a video (from other content creators, news outlets etc.), a social media
post, or one of many other sources!
 Example 1: you choose a global issue of feminism and a primary source of a recent superhero movie. Your response
deals with misogyny and objectification in film
 Example 2: you choose a global issue of corruption and a primary source of a recently published opinion column. Your
response deals with the ways you would like to address problems in local politics

Each member of the group will individually create a video relating to the group’s chosen issue. As a group, your videos can
“respond” to one another in a sequential format, or they can simply all respond to the initial primary source.

As this is a creative assignment, you are encouraged to explore any options available to you in terms of video editing (e.g.
sound/music, filters, images etc) but you will not be evaluated on these artistic elements.

Details
 September 7 (gr 91); September 12 (gr 92): In-class individual or group work to finish determining your global issue,
your primary source, your purpose, and your target audience. One group member must upload your group’s proposal
on Lea, under “travaux”. Clearly state the name of all group members in the document. Proposals must be submitted
by midnight on the day of this class.
 September 19 (gr 91); September 21 (gr 92): Creative project due at midnight on this day. Each member of the team
must submit the individual portion of the assignment on Lea, under “travaux”. Late submissions will be penalised 5%
per day.

The goals of this evaluation are to become more familiar with the conventions of response videos/informational videos as a text
type by creating one; to learn more about a subject that interests you; and to demonstrate your understanding of our course
work (understanding and analysis of non-literary texts; identification and exploration of global issues).

The individual project has three elements: (1) the video; (2) works cited list and (3) the rationale of the video. Use the
document template provided on Léa (“Creative project submission document”) when handing in your project.

(1) The video

Create a response video where you explore your global issue in response to the primary source and/or respond to your group
member(s). Videos should be approximately 4-5 minutes long. Be sure to reference any external material appropriately
(indicate clearly if a quote or idea from another source is used).

Within your video, use several of the text type’s key features. Keep both the purpose of your video and your target audience
in mind for each choice you make when creating your text. Be sure to meet the purpose and to reach your audience!
Remember that this audience may vary and you are able to decide who you are trying to reach, as well as why.

Submit your video by inserting a link to it at the top of your document

(2) Works Cited list

Submit a Works Cited list, in MLA format and alphabetical order, of all sources you consulted while working on this project. You
must use at least two sources (other than your primary source) in researching your subject. The primary source must also be
cited in this list.

(3) The rationale

Submit a rationale of 150-200 words, explaining your decision-making process behind your video. Explain the
features/techniques you used and their intended effects on the audience.
