Formative assessment 1- IBDP Year 1- Chemistry

Ionisation energy- Trends seen in a groups and periods

Dear Students,

You are required to collect the First ionization energies of any two groups and periods
present in the modern periodic table. The collected data needs to be appropriately tabulated and
necessary graphs have to be plotted. The ionization energy trends in the group and period have to
be stated and explained. Necessary analysis is required while explain the trends.

You may use the following websites to collect the data.

https://www.lenntech.com/periodic-chart-elements/ionization-energy.htm

https://www.wiredchemist.com/chemistry/data/ionization

https://periodictable.com/Properties/A/IonizationEnergies.html

Or any other databases of your choice.

Use multiple data-bases. This helps in identifying the reliability and validity of the data.

There are five ATL skills; Thinking Skills, Communication Skills, Self Management Skills,
Research Skills and Social Skills.

Out of these three are being assessed in this formative assessment.

1. Thinking skills
2. Communication skills and
3. Research skills.

The learning outcomes of the formative assessment are as follows:

1. To know the process of using the different databases

2. To identify appropriate data required to identify the trends of Ionization energies
3. To state, explain and analyze the data collected.
4. To plot the graphs and analyze them.

You are encouraged to do sufficient research on the topic. You may type in word document
convert into pdf and submit.
