Lesson Objectives
At the end of this lesson, the pre-service
teacher (PST) should be able to familiarize
oneself with Chinese Literature.

Specifically, at the end of this session, the PST


should be able to:
a. Understand the place of Confucius and
Confucianism in Chinese Literature; and
b. Identify key events and details in the
periods of Chinese Literature.
Confucianism
• a complete ideological system created by
Confucius
• based on the traditional culture of the Xia,
Shang and Zhou Dynasties.
• is the cornerstone of traditional Chinese
culture
Confucianism
is not a religion but more a doctrine
than belief
It is part of world cultural heritage
and an integral part of Chinese life.
The Analects
The Analects of Confucius is an
anthology of brief passages that present
the words of Confucius and his disciples,
describe Confucius as a man, and
recount some of the events of his life.

Chinese Poetry
• The greatest poets are thought to have lived
a thousand years ago or more during the
Tang (618-907), Song (960-1279) and Han
(206 BC – 220 AD) dynastic eras.
• Du Fu, Li Bai and Su Shi are considered
among the best ancient poets, and there
are five major kinds of major ancient poetic
styles called Shi, Ci, Ge, Qu and Fu.
