SSU-MA CH'IEN

• A renowned Chinese historian, succeeded his


father as the court historian to the Han
dynasty. He dedicated himself to completing
the first history of China, covering the Han
empire and East and Central Asia. However, a
personal tragedy interrupted his work, leading
to his imprisonment and castration.
• Despite the humiliation, Ch'ien chose a life of
bitterness and shame, completing the Records
of the Historian before his death at the age of
fifty-five. This historic chronicle covers nearly
three thousand years of Chinese history in
over half a million written characters.

have existed, though his book has
been a forgery.
• He believed in a sequence of
causes determining everything,
and that people should pursue
their own self-interests.
LUI AN

• A Taoist scholar and Han dynasty


founder, was the Prince of Haui-nan.
• He surrounded philosophers,
producing essays on metaphysics,
cosmology, politics, and conduct.
• He committed suicide after a failed
coup.
