Marriage enrichment uses an educational approach to enhance couple relationships. The
goals of marriage enrichment are to help couples become aware of themselves and their partners,
explore their partners’ feelings and thoughts, encourage empathy and intimacy, and develop
effective communication and problem-solving skills. Although many of the programs were created
for couples that are functioning fairly well in their marriages, there is an increase in the programs
being used with troubled and dysfunctional couples. Marriage enrichment programs may differ in
format and scope, however they all strive to strengthen relationships, build interpersonal skills,
4
and prevent marital distress. Research has been conducted on several marriage enrichment
programs to determine their effectiveness and appropriateness.
A research study found that couples participating in marriage enrichment program
demonstrated improved marital satisfaction, sexual intimacy, and intellectual intimacy. Results
from another study demonstrated that participants involved marriage enrichment had
significantly higher scores in self-disclosure than those in the control group. One study looked at
marriage enrichment’s effect on need for control, expressed affection, and wanted affection
indicated that compared to the control group, those in the treatment group had significant
improvement in identifying their needs for control, expressed affection, and wanted affection.
Studies on marriage enrichment have also demonstrated that inventories could differentiate
between happily and unhappily married couples.
A study examining the effects of a marriage enrichment program on communication and
conflict resolution skills in couples indicated that participants demonstrated higher levels of
positive communication and lower levels of negative communication than the control group. A 5-
year follow-up study showed that participants continued with higher levels of positive and lower
levels of negative communication than the control group. In addition, the treatment group had
lower levels of marital violence. Research has also indicated that couples that participate in a
marriage enrichment program are less likely to separate or divorce up to 5 years after
participating in the program (Hahlweg, Markman, Thurmaier, Engl, & Eckert, 1998; Markman et
al., 1993).
In addition to outcome research, there have also been studies conducted on what marriage
enrichment participants view as helpful during their experiences. Overall, marriage enrichment
participants generally view their experiences as rewarding. One research study found that 70%
of participants viewed their experiences as excellent or very good.

Sergio Butron, senior class president, provided his definition of an overachiever: “An
overachiever is someone who does more than what is expected.”
Sophomore Kevin Dotel contributes his manner of workings to his parents, “My parents
came from another country to here, so I figure that I should work hard and do well.” He mentioned
experiencing stress through overachieving, but that the satisfaction he feels upon completing jobs
or tasks makes the challenge worthwhile. “Not only do I enjoy learning, but I vision myself being
successful,” Dotel added.
Students are raised with the belief that the best of the best are only those who score 100
percent. “To be the best. To be the best of the school, or to be the best you can be,” said sophomore
Michelle Phoenix, when asked what her motivation is. Senior Juliet Whidden is one of the top
students in the school, and she makes time to participate in Key Club, cross country, Science
Olympiad, and NHS. “For me it’s not as much about grades,” said Whidden. “I need to know that I
learned. I think I just care a lot about school.” There are some students who overachieve because
they simply believe it helps them. Others may not be so eager to agree. For some, overachieving
may be spurred by fear or judgement. This can come from grades, teachers, parents, etc.
It should not come as a shock that not everybody is an overachiever. In fact, studies show
that most students struggle to complete the base work assigned to them. “I think it’s something
where you either have it or you don’t,” said Mathura. “Sit back, put things in perspective, take a
deep breathe, and take things one task at a time.”

Most of us of have taken a selfie at one time or another, be it a photo of ourselves in a
beautiful place, during a performance by our favourite band, or on a memorable night out with
friends. But today, more and more people are putting their lives at risk in an attempt to get the
most shocking pictures to share on social media. In several cases, this action has had disastrous
consequences.
Take, for example, the Spaniard who was killed by a bull while he was taking a selfie during
the annual Bull Run in a village near his hometown, or the Singaporean tourist who died when he
fell from cliffs on the coast of Bali. Such incidents have led to the death toll from selfie-related
incidents reaching double figures for the first time in 2015, overtaking the number of victims of
shark attacks.
Despite the risks, social media is full of pictures featuring near misses that could have been
fatal under other circumstances. Under the caption “Most dangerous selfie ever”, a woman posing
at a stadium can be seen narrowly avoiding being hit in the head by a baseball approaching her.
Yet the photo has received thousands of “likes”, and the comments below it suggest that this
behavior is something to be admired.
8
In response to the increasing threat posed by the selfie, the authorities have started to take
action. The Russian Interior Ministry, for instance, has launched a public education campaign
advising selfie-takers against balancing on dangerous surfaces or posing with their pets, among
other things. But if instructions like this are really necessary, then perhaps it is about time we
asked ourselves which is more important, a “like” or a life?

Just like any other human’s need, entertainment has been under the spotlight of human’s
most important primary need along with food, clothes, residences, and electronic gadgets. The
same thing happens to almost all school students dealing with a lot of tasks and assignments daily.
The bad news is that it happens in every single school all around the world. In fact, sitting in the
same spots and looking at their books for a long time can eventually decrease their productivity.
This is, of course, something their teacher and parents would not like. School entertainment, then,
10
can be the only option that can solve such problems. While boredom has always been the central
problem of one’s productivity, especially at schools, these are several points that emphasize the
importance of entertainment at schools.
Those children can be sitting in the same room together all day. However, it does not mean
that they will have a proper interaction with each other because of the workloads. How to cope
with this then? Having a trip going somewhere nice will be a great helper to know each other and
eventually bring them closer. It strengthens their bond as students as well as their respect for the
teachers. The final result from this condition will be their increasing productivity.
If you think that having a school trip somewhere is quite outdated, then you might want
to consider having a training labeled as a picnic. Of course, this has to be done in a fun way that
the students will start to enjoy themselves. There are many sources of information that you can
dig to find any material related to the activities, such as the Internet, magazines, and newspaper.
Such activities aim for the students’ better personalities. Leadership, honesty, and loyalty are
some examples of the targeted results. However, to carry out the best team building activities, you
should consider hiring the professional event organizer since it will be quite impossible to do that
without the proper knowledge about it.
The need for entertainment has always been associated with boredom as the result of
repetitive and monotonous learning atmosphere. If your children have been having the symptoms
of idea loss and distraction, their boredom level might hit the highest peak point. As more and
more children are having the same problem at their schools, having a school entertainment can
quickly soothe their boredom.

As with any engineering field, students need to keep up their grades in math and science,
but since Civil Engineering focuses on the interaction of the built environment with the natural
environment, they should also get acquainted with other disciplines.
“Opportunities for learning about CE are everywhere”, says Roman Stocker, associate
professor at MIT. The secret is similar to how a young botanist must get down on her hands and
18
knees to examine the liverworts along the riverbank. Stocker’s own interest in fluid mechanics
began in just that way. “I remember damming up water in the creek to make it flow in different
patterns,” he recalls. For those who don’t live close to a creek, Stocker suggests a trip to the library.
He recommends David McCollough’s The Great Bridge: The Epic Story of the Building of the
Brooklyn Bridge.
Do you wonder why waves produce patterns in the sediment along the seashore, or why a
sandcastle needs to be built on wet sand? “Start by finding answers to those questions in a book
or on the Internet,” says Stocker. “Then go back to the beach and test whether what you’ve read
matches your experience.” You can learn just as much from noticing how much green space is lost
during a paving project down your block, how the traffic in your neighborhood changes during a
construction project, how the tides affect the shoreline, or what happens to the water on your
street after a rainstorm.
“Civil engineering was born as engineering to serve society, and almost everything you see
has a connection with it,” Stocker says. The best preparation for becoming a civil engineer is to
heed his simple advice: “Always be curious about the world around you.”

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D to indicate the correct answer to
each of the questions from 44 to 50.
“A lot of organizations rely on retired seniors,” says Jobelle Duka, the volunteer manager
at Central California Food Bank, in Fresno, Calif. If you need volunteers during a pandemic, you’ll
most likely have to find new, younger ones without the kind of pre-existing health conditions that
make people particularly vulnerable to an outbreak.
In recent weeks, the food bank has seen a 50 percent increase in the number of visitors.
Duka used to need 10 volunteers a day; she now requires 30. After the governor issued a statewide
shelter-in-place order, Duka started calling around to organizations that had volunteers they
could no longer use, like hospices and hospitals. She reached out to nearby colleges, churches and
19
the local emergency-services office, which assigned her 12 AmeriCorps members. Duka now has
wait-lists for every volunteer shift.
Don’t turn people away because of age. “The only age requirement we have is that you
can’t be under 5,” Duka says. If people over 65 want to assist, figure out ways to protect them by
assigning work they can do from home, like data entry. “Let whole families help,” says Duka, who
has seen a significant uptick in families coming into the warehouse to fill boxes and sort through
donated produce. Ask parents to make sure their children wash hands, wear masks and gloves
and keep away from others. “Ten-year-olds are actually really helpful,” Duka says. “That’s the age
when they can start listening and following directions.”
Match type of volunteer to job. Teenagers and children are more likely to enjoy unpleasant
tasks that many adults find off-putting, like sorting putrid oranges from good ones, an assignment
Duka almost never gives to financial donors. Reliable, healthy young adults should take on the
riskier jobs like distributing food to the hungry. Accept that most new volunteers won’t stay.
Eventually, children will go back to school, parents will return to workplaces and you’ll be left
with the demographic you depended on before the pandemic: retired seniors. “Keep in touch
with them,” Duka says. “Let them know you appreciate them and look forward to seeing them
when this is all over.”-

Homework is an (26) part of school life in most countries around the world. (27) , there is
still considerable debate among teachers about whether homework has a significant educational
value. On the one side are those who claim that it takes too much time away from (28)
more useful activities. On the other are those who see homework as reinforcing school
lessons so that concepts will not be forgotten. (29) is often neglected in this debate is the role
of parental involvement and whether or not the child's home provides support for effective
homework. Parents in low-income families often do not have the time to make homework a
priority or are not able to afford a computer or additional books. Whatever money they have goes
on the basic necessities of life-accommodation, food, clothing and heating. However, the (30)
that only middle-class parents support their children's education is quite
23
obviously wrong. Not all well-to-do parents give the support they should, and some parents living
in the most impoverished circumstances imaginable find the time and energy to involve
themselves in their children's homework.

of the questions from 31 to 35.
Many people feel a mid-afternoon slump in mood and alertness. Many people believe that
this slump is caused by eating a heavy lunch, or by getting a poor night's sleep the night before. In
fact, this slump occurs naturally because humans were meant to have a mid-afternoon nap.
Thomas Edison, Winston Churchill, Albert Einstein, and Bill Clinton are all famous fans of
napping - and with good reason. Various evidence, including the universal tendency of toddlers
and the elderly to nap in the afternoon, and the afternoon nap of siesta cultures, have led many
scientists to the same conclusion: nature tells us to take a nap in the middle of the day. Short
periods of sleep have been shown to improve alertness, memory and motor skills, decision-
making, and mood - all while cutting down on stress, carelessness, and even heart disease.
Our biological urge to sleep in the middle of the afternoon coincides with a slight drop in
body temperature. This drop occurs whether we have lunch or not. A midday nap is apart of the
daily routine of many cultures, especially those near the equator. This all seems to suggests that
napping may have been part of an ancient biological signal to get us out of the hot midday sun.
Whatever the reason, if you have an opportunity for an afternoon nap, take one. Studies show that
20 minutes of sleep in the afternoon provides more rest than getting 20 minutes more sleep in the
morning. A 20-minute power nap provides the energy for a fresh burst of new ideas and energy.
Naps seem to eliminate the need for more caffeine during the workday, and this lowers stress.
The do's and don'ts of napping.
The early afternoon seems to be the best time to nap - approximately eight hours after you
have woken up in the morning. Twenty to thirty minutes is all you need to get the full rewards of
a midday nap. There is no proof that sleeping longer than this is any better; in fact, the opposite
may be true. In the dark, our brains produce more of the sleep-inducing hormone melatonin, so
close the blinds, turn off the lights, and consider using a sleeping mask. Keep the temperature on
the warmer side. Don't forget to turn off your cell phone. And avoid caffeine for a few hours before
a nap. Give it a try for yourself, and see if you aren't amazed at the results!

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, R, c, or D to indicate the correct answer to
each of the questions from 36 to 42.
If you struggle with reading, then watching TV can certainly seem a lot easier. It certainly
feels like a passive activity, requiring little effort from us but to relax. But what benefits are you
missing out on by not reading? And what specifically are the benefits of reading compared to
watching television or movies?
Even though TV is mostly dialogue, books are better than television at increasing your
vocabulary. So why is reading better for your vocabulary? TV typically uses short and simple
sentences, pitched at a fourth grade level. Good children’s books however, typically contain
language twice as complex as a TV show. This means using a greater range of vocabulary, longer
sentences and more complex sentences. Adult novels and especially newspapers can step up the
benefits again, with even richer and more varied language.
Some television programs do provide great educational input. We love National
Geographic as much as the next person. But more often a TV show requires little to no input or
thinking by the viewer. We admit it; this is one of the attractions of television on occasion. Trouble
is, a Japanese study in 2013 found watching TV actually lowered the IQ of children. In contrast, a
recent study by Emory University found reading novels created heightened connectivity in the
brain for up to five days after reading. Connectivity in the brain translates to getting smarter over
time. So reading can make you smarter.
Reading has been shown to reduce stress in just six minutes! Research shows reading
works faster and better than listening to music, drinking coffee or even taking a walk. TV might
feel like it relaxes your body, but another study showed television can amplify stress because we
frequently feel guilty or like a failure afterwards.
Reading is not generally seen as a social activity. Yet reading can have great impact on
how we react in social situations. Reading develops better verbal and empathy skills. Better
empathy, verbal skills, and knowledge make readers more interesting and attractive people.
Watching TV is a basically antisocial experience. Especially for young children compared to
being read a story by a parent or grandparent. Reading aloud together is an interactive process
especially important for the development of young children.
