Chapter 1 establishes Hugo as an independent and resourceful boy, constantly evading the

watchful eyes of the train station inspector. As he lives alone and fills out his uncles job who
mysteriously disappeared one night.

In Chapter 2, readers learn about Hugo's secret project, fixing an automaton that his father
had been working on before his death. The automaton is a mechanical man that can write and
draw when properly repaired. This becomes Hugo's obsession as he scours the city for parts
to fix it.

Chapter 3 introduces Isabelle, a girl who befriends Hugo after catching him stealing from her
guardian’s toy booth. Isabelles guardian is Papa Georges who is a toy booths owner. Hugo
steals from him little gears and mechanism stuff trying to fix the automaton.

Chapter 4 Hugo goes to Papa Georges house and finds the girl Isabelle he met earlier near the
Toy booth staring at him down the window, she comes down and Hugo said Papa Georges
stole his notebook. Isabelle promises to return it from him.

Chapter 5 shows flashbacks of Hugo and his father, and how his father found the automaton
In the museum attic he worked in and then he would try to fix it for Hugo. Hugos father
worked at a museum and as a clockmaker.

Chapter 6 shows how Hugo runs back to the toy booth the next day as he is exited to receive
the notebook back Papa Georges gives him a handkerchief when Hugo opens it he is filled
with tears as it was burnt ashes he tries to attack Papa but Hugo is to weak and not strong
enough.

Chapter 7 reveals Isabelle calling Hugo to meet her at the bookstore as Hugo approaches the
store he is in awe and remembers his dad. He meets Isabelle and she tells him that his
notebook isn’t actually burnt.

In Chapter 8, To receive his notebook back Hugo is told by Papa Georges that if he works for
him he will most likely return his notebook back. As Hugo works for a couple of days he
starts stealing little mechanical parts again to fix the automaton.

Chapter 9 Hugo thinks about how Isabelle introduced him to Etienne as his friend, he remevrs
his 2 old friends from school. Hugo takes the parts he stole out from his pocket and fixes an
arm of the automaton without the notebook, he is determined to fix it with the notebook or
without it.
