“Everything has a purpose, even machines. Clocks tell the time, trains
take you places. They do what they’re meant to do. Maybe that’s why
broken machines make me so sad. They can’t do what they’re meant to
do.”

This film’s statement wants to explain that every single thing in

our lives exists for a reason. Everything has its role/ function to
perform and create benefits, even the small objects like clocks
that are used for checking the time, or the big conveyance like
trains which transport us from one place to another place. It is
obvious that all of them have their own capabilities (has a
purpose).

If anything is broken or nonfunctional, it will make us feel sad to

see it cannot do what it always does anymore.
George Melies:
He was one of the famous filmmakers who first invented
a film studio and created more than a hundred of films. He
was the one who realised that dream was able to be captured
by the film. He became a very successful filmmaker at that
time, unfortunately, due to the war occuring that time, his had
to end his career as a filmmaker. He was also forced to sell his
film, he later became an owner of a toy shop instead. Since his
dream job came to an end, George lived his life with no
purpose and tried to forget about his successful past. George
was so upset that he and his work was forgotten until he met
Rene Tabard, a man who took George as his inspiration. Rene
proved George wrong when he thought negatively about
himself. George finally became proud of himself once again
since he realised that others still knew his worth. This could be
related to the theme of “purpose of life” that Hugo had
mentioned. As Hugo said, “everything has a purpose”, George
was able to live happily again when he was able to present his
film in the hall again; his purpose is to create a film and make
enjoyable moment for other people.
Isabelle:
A girl who has George Melies as her godfather.
Since her mother and father died since she was young,
she told Hugo that she would have a life purpose if she
knew about her real father and mother. However, Isabelle
was able to realise her purpose of life when she knew
about her godfather’s issue, she tried to figure out way to
help George to become happy and enjoy moment of his
life again. Moreover, Isabelle sincerely helped Hugo
without thought of a return, when the heart key she had
was able to fix the mechanical man, she was so grateful
with Hugo. Isabelle lived her life with a purpose that
wished people surrounding her to be happy and joyful.

In the end of this movie, the director was trying to

present the theme that everything has its own purpose by
indicating Isabelle sitting and writing a journal revealing
another purpose of Isabelle which was writing a book
telling her own fascinating story.
Hugo Cabret:
Hugo is the main character in the movie.
He is a 12 years old boy who is an orphan
living in a Montparnasse railway station.
He is good at fixing mechanical things.

Theme: As hugo believes that everything is

created by a purpose, he aims to find what
he really has passion to do, and what is the
message in that antique robot that was
abandoned by his father.

Hugo tries hard to fix the robots in order to know the message that his father wanted to tell.
He decides to steals tools from the George Melies’s toy shop, yet he is unfortunately captured
by George. Then George keeps the book that hold information of the machine with him, and
Hugo has to work for him to get it back. Some time later, Hugo eventually repairs the robot
without using the book and gets the key from Isabelle. After that, George decides to adopt
Hugo to his family.
Choose 2 scenes in the film, and break down
the COMPOSITION and MISE-EN-SCENE.
How do the cinematic choices elevate and
add to the scene(s) you are presenting?
1st scene

This scene was when Georges Méliès talk about his past that he started as a magician and he
also like to invented stuff. He also mention that his automaton and said “It was a particular pressure”
and “ my heart is into him”. The use of closed-up shot make the audience focus on the main
character and the audience. The light was created to highlight at Mr. Méliès and his automaton. Mr.
Méliès is looking at the automaton directly and the composition of the automaton is placed higher
than Mr. Méliès. This can be interpret that the automaton has a power and it is very important for
Mr. Méliès which is supported from what he has said.
2nd scene

This scene is when Hugo was trying to run away from Inspector Gustave Dasté because
Gustave want to take him to orphanage as he recognize that Hugo is an orphan. Then, when Hugo
got caught by Gustave, he drops automaton to the track. The size of the shot was an extreme wide
shot then closed up to an extreme close-up to show Hugo face. The focus of the camera, the use the
Rule of Thirds, and the light at both of the sides that are brighter make the audience focus directly in
the middle. The composition that Hugo is in the middle and the unknown people are at the side also
show the important of the character. The high-angle camera make Hugo looks weak and the train
looks powerful. If Gustave didn’t help him, he might be at risk. Though, it show that he is endangered
to try his best to safe the automaton.
